Why does it sound better with out the instrumental? They hit the hymn and had me transcend
Because the music is pretty basic and meh. It's their (and especially her) voices that were amazing
If you listen to it super loud, it's AMAZING with or without music.
@@aaronpaul9188 Man, this song has many instruments with different rithms, tones and melody. The harmony is basic, but still pretty good.
@@SuperIperMegaTriper Yeah, I agree, the instrumentation is great. But I think both of them have incredible voices, especially Gotye.
Because
They can sing amazingly
The instrumental is literally just the chords (which don’t get me wrong still sounds good but it just makes it so it shines just as much as the voices, and with their talent, the vocals don’t depend on the instrumental and viceversa)
The song’s tone really fits with the almost echoing background of the acapella, it has to do with the feeling it brings
Oh and also the oohs by Kimbra in the second chorus, they are just as good as having instruments, her vocals are amazing, and so is Gotye’s, especially with the chorus
1:31 i love how when she starts her vocals it seems like her hands are doing this motion of controlling a fire ball, so much power in her voice that she has to tame it.
It looks like she's making an imaginary sandwich to me.

You know a song is truly legendary when YEARS later people not only still adore
But begin to truly understand, still appreciate, love, relate to, and feel to every single time they listen to it….
For the ones who still ask where Gotye is, the answer is easy: He still plays music with his band "The Basics" as drummer-singer, they also perform songs like this one or Heart a Mess (Both from Gotye as single).
So thats it, i higly recommend his other works and to take a look at his band, they are pretty good actually. We still hope he keep on producing his own music, but nowadays there is no notice of any new album or something like that.
Love this man! 🙌🏼
Thank you.

You don't realise how good these two are until you hear it without music.
Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it's an ache I still remember
You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well, you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad it was over
But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No, you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records
And then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now and then, I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believing it was always something that I'd done
But I don't wanna live that way
Reading into every word you say
You said that you could let it go
And I wouldn't catch, you hung up on
Somebody that you used to know
But you didn't have to cut me off

Think it's one of the best songs every written. The vocal arrangement is extremely intelligent. Theres a part of me like most here that want to hear more from the artists but know those lyrics were born out of a painful situation that I wouldn't wish on the writer.
