    I was sceptical at first but popped into a local dealer who ordered it in for me to look at with no deposit or obligation to buy. I knew within 60 seconds I wasn't leaving the shop without it. Not only is it a great looking thing, but from a collectors point of view, it is a significantly important piece, being Seikos first ever budget automatic GMT. Definitely a future desirable classic.

    There seem to be 2 versions of this watch. The guys buying in US markets are getting watches with Made in Japan on them. Those of us who bought overseas didn't get Made in Japan watches as far as I can tell. Mine from Bangkok and the one I saw from Hong Kong aren't marked Made in Japan.

  • @johnmoyer9719
    @johnmoyer9719 Před 2 lety +2

    I bought one of these and recieved it seveal days ago. Bought it at Long Island Watch and Marc was fantastic as always. I've made several purchases from him and it's always been a positive experience or better. So the watch......Negatives (how negative is personal preference)....No screw down crown. Hardlex rather than sapphire. No lume on bezel. Stamped clasp. Thats about it. For me the biggest problem is the stamped clasp. It takes an otherwise winner and just adds a cheap feel to it. That said, I'm going to either replace the whole bracelet or at least the clasp. The bracelet itself is really decent. The stamped clasp is the problem for me. Don't get me wrong....it's not that it's horrible. It's actually that the rest of the watch is good enough that it deserves better. Positives.....EVERYTHING else. Had Seiko gone with sapphire, a milled clasp, screw down crown and lume on the bezel and charged $750, they would have sold every single one they made. That said they probably still will. Mine is a keeper.

    • @Chrissepisje
      @Chrissepisje Před 2 lety

      Out of curiosity, did you ever have a stamped clasp break on you? People complain a lot about that, but for decades not only Seiko but certainly also Rolex had cheap looking stamped clasps, and I've never seen one break at the clasp. If anything happens to the bracelet, it tends to be the spring bar popping out, in my experience.

    • @johnmoyer9719
      @johnmoyer9719 Před 2 lety

      @@Chrissepisje I've had one fail at the hinge but it's not so much being concerned about failure as it is on a $500 watch I'd like to see it machined. Hell even if they'd up the price a bit. I agree completely with you and Rolex being stamped at one point but given today's mass milling/machining capabilities (compared to back when even companies like Rolex used stamped),it's a nice enough watch I'd like to see it milled.

    Why is this not a “true” GMT? It tracks at least two time zones with an adjustable 24hr hand, correct? That makes it “true” to my estimates. I think we should stop using the word “true” as a synonym for traveler’s GMT. This Seiko is simply a caller’s GMT.

    • @kychoi2653
      @kychoi2653 Před 2 lety +1

      At the second position of the crown, the hour/minutes hands can not be rotated without the rotation of GMT hand. It is a big mistake for GMT watch. Or at the first position of the crown, hour/minutes hands should be rotated instead of GMT hand like Rolex II.

    • @joshuamelara1495
      @joshuamelara1495 Před 2 lety +8

      @@kychoi2653 there is no mistake in a caller GMT. Those movements were designed and engineered with intention. My point is that both configurations are capable of keeping track of at least two time zones and should thusly both be “true.”

    • @kychoi2653
      @kychoi2653 Před 2 lety +1

      @@joshuamelara1495 "caller's GMT" can be easily achieved by the bezel rotation. and so-called "caller's GMT" is only for the watch which has no bezel rotation function, so To the watch with bezel rotation function, "caller's GMT" hands rotations setting is very very idiot and foolish. Hands rotations should be "traveler's GMT" setting, if they have bezel rotation function.

    • @joshuamelara1495
      @joshuamelara1495 Před 2 lety +8

      @@kychoi2653 your last comment is hard to follow, but it seems like you still believe there is a mistake in a caller GMT. I ask you to ponder this: when Seiko set out to make this new movement, do you think their intention was to make a traveler GMT and failed and somehow that mistake ended up as a caller? Or do you think it is more likely that they set out to manufacture this movement with intention and succeeded? I’m not arguing that one is easier to manufacture than the other, I’m simply saying that both are GMT movements capable of virtually the same functions and therefore the term “true GMT” that gets thrown around is nonsensical. They are both “true” and one is not “truer” than the other.

    Nice review, good photography. I get that this is a GMT and not a dive watch but the 100 m water resistance and the non-screwdown crown render this particular watch's water resistance useless.
    Many reviews fail to mention 100m of water resistance DOES NOT mean your watch can be used for swimming - in a pool, in a river or at the beach. Even 200m does NOT guarantee this.
    It can and might be able to withstand a five-minute swim and you may get away with it several times - but only a 200m ISO certified watch, such as a Seiko PADI or Citizen Promaster dive watch, guarantees true water resistance while swimming and diving.
    Hamilton and Certina produce watches with 300m of water resistance, stated on both the dial and the caseback but they are not ISO certified and prone to compromise - if you notice a tiny water droplet on the inside of the dial do not place the watch in the sun or under a light - take it directly to a watch repair shop who will remove the sapphire crystal to deal with the humidity in the watch and make sure it dries thoroughly.

    • @ivanmejia6843
      @ivanmejia6843 Před rokem +2

      You said it yourself, this is not a dive watch. Plenty of options from Orient/Seiko/Citizen for diving. That said, 100WR from a powerhouse such as Seiko is more than enough for swimming. The push-pull crown on this one is pretty sturdy, takes a lot of effort to pull it out.
      Seiko usually are conservative with their numbers, they perform much better. Lots of people swim with their SNK809 which has 30m WR.

    If it is the screwy end on the one side; that final link can be removed and replaced with the same end link like on the other side.

    The caliber 4R34 is adjusted at the factory to keep the time between +45 / -35 seconds per day, this is an insult and that's the main issue with below $2,000 watches. The 6R35 is slightly better than this one, so I'll keep my G-Shocks and other quartz watches for the EDC "economic" solution (below $2,000) and save for a high-end COSC/META wristwatch.

      But I totally disagree when you say that's the main issue under 2k. I have two watches with the Powermatic 80, one in a PRX, another on a Certina DS Action Diver 38mm and one is at +2, the other at -4. You don't need no spend 2k to get an accurate movement at all.

I'm trying to think of what the thinnest watch I've seen with an NH35 is and I think its around 12mm, this is thicker still so expect whatever it's in to be at least 13mm thick. Maybe it will inspire Miyota to make a GMT movement, they seem to be able to do it thinner and better in pretty much every respect. I am glad it exists, just not for me.

    It's insanely depressing to hear "a perfectly alligned seiko is a unicorn.". Like wtf seiko. I have a gen 1 orange monster and an snz white face field watch with perfect allignment and i had no idea that was rare. I want to buy some more watches but it seems like buying a seiko is just a crap shoot whether you'll get one with even such a basic fit quality as to be properly alligned. THere's no real excuse for this for any watch over 50 dollars.

    My authorized dealer didn't even know these were coming out I started bugging him second week of June and he was on vacation so I checked back with him on July 1st and he called his distributor then happily called me back and said he'd ordered a bunch of them I asked for the '01 but then I realized I already have two skx 007s that are black on black so I believe I'm going to go with the 03 the blueberry. It seems like a lot of people are calling the blue one a blueberry instead of a Batman or Batgirl so keeping with that theme I would like to say that the
    SSK-001= BlackBerry
    SSK-003 = Blueberry
    SSK-005 = Winter Berry
    I went online and the only orange Berry that I could find was this Winterberry which is right in the same color range and fits with the nickname scheme that I'm suggesting anyway I'm sure that a bunch of people are going to tear my head off and say that that's a terrible idea if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all.
    Positive thoughts on nicknames?
    Other's opinions for a list of Nicknames? Personally psycho to me has always been their own thing and I like the idea of them having their own nicknames for these watches

    This is a watch I want to love, but the 5 branding scares me off. I had an older (maybe 5-10 year old model) 5, and it was pretty much garbage. Just too cheap to work well and feel good. I would love to hear about the action and case quality changes since the older 5s (when they killed the SK line and expanded the 5).

    Yeah I don't understand why Seiko doesn't start doing nicer finishes at the $500 price point I bought a steel dive unbranded Willard homage and the same week I purchased a grenade king turtle the steel dive was I think $89 the turtle was 500 bucks and I would say the steel dive had an overall nicer finish overall the steel dive had a steel bracelet not a rubber strap they both had sapphire crystal they both are a 200 M dive watch with screw down crown I found the bezel click to be far superior on the steel dive the brushing was equally as good on both it really came down to three things the bracelet was way nicer on the steel dive the steel dive had applied indices on the dial the turtle had printed indices and the bezel was just far nicer ceramic bezel on both but the click is just that much better on the steel dive it has me actually looking into getting other homages by Steel dive I have the tuna homage and it's neck and neck with my Seiko except for the Shroud on the steel dive the opening for the Shroud should be rotated around the dial in a different spot and it's a little Sharp otherwise fantastic in every way double Dome Sapphire amazing click great bracelet honestly almost on par with the Seiko I guess I just need to buy a turtle homage by them and compare them side by side unbranded of course

    It's too bad really. They have the resources to make watches that people actually want, but instead keep grinding out the same quality issue pieces with movements they make no effort to cut down in size or make more accurate...they just 'skin suit' their quality issues in old tech and put all their effort into a watch line nobody can really afford, and if they can afford then they go for Swiss watches. There is no elevation from their innovations. Their Presage line, supposed to be a mid-tier...still as thick as a brick with a questionably designed case shape that has an identity issue...which makes it over-priced. They've abandoned their designs which were promising and still have a lot of fans, in order to make tiered down 'have this instead' knock offs. Seiko doesn't deserve your money unti they get their head on straight. Save...get an Omega, Tudor etc.
