  • The RockShox Pike Ultimate. The top of the range in the Pike series. The do anything suspension fork comes in 120mm, 130mm and 140mm travel for 27.5 and 29 inch bikes. The Ultimate model in this video features the Charger 3 RC2 Damper with Buttercups, the DebonAir+ Spring, Ultimate bushings, and Pressure Relief Valves in the lowers. The box includes hub end cap adaptors for wheels with the standard size hub end caps, rather than the larger Torque caps.
    Other Models in the Pike Range
    • Pike Ultimate (in the video) $999 or £964
    • Pike Select+ (only on prebuilt bikes and upgradeable to Ultimate Spec, no buttercups)
    • Pike Select (Old damper, or pressure valves, can be upgraded) $749 or £723
    • Pike (Rush RC damper, can be upgraded to Ultimate spec) (only on prebuilt bikes)
    Available in 37mm and 44mm offset for 27.5" Wheels and just 44mm Offset for 29" Wheels
    Launched May 26th 2022
    These also use the new Maxima suspension oils rather than the old RockShox 0-30w oils.
    The charger 3 damper features separate circuits for High Speed Compression and Low Speed Compression. You can fit 2 Volume spacers if needed, but none are fitted out of the box. We would probably recommend fitting 1 volume spacer for rocky terrain. Heavier riders or bike packers might like the support of fitting the second.
    The buttercup system and pressure relief valves were first released on the electronic Flight Attendant forks earlier in the year.
    We paid regular trade price for these forks, and they will be available for sale in our shop as a used item after the review. We will also have the new Lyrik Ultimates and will review these on our Instagram and TikTok pages. Help fund the channel here: withkoji.com/@Mapdec

    Good video, first full breakdown on here I think. Overall they look really good. Will be interesting to see what technology trickles down to the Pike Select at a later date.
    Shame about the bushings though, I feel that they should be fully workshop serviceable at least. That said, if they last a while then I suspect it won’t be an issue for many.

      Purely for the clean looks…. And most likely because they use the same Stanchions across many more forks now. I’m a fan.

    No problems with this RockShox top-caps on the air valve. I always used both thumbs on top of both sides of the cap, just one twisty motion and You can easily unscrew it :)

    Nice video! I just installed my 130mm Pike Ultimate yesterday and the first ride is tomorrow morning. Quick question, when you removed the air spring, was it the same 2-pin circlip that SRAM has used forever, or is it a flat retaining clip like a FOX? It's hard to tell from your video.

    Great review. Have a question. I can get a new rockshox ultimate 21/22 for 700.00 . The 23 model will cost me 1000.00 is it worth the extra 300.00 for the new technology. Is it that much better. Thanks

    • @Mapdec
      @Mapdec  Před 2 lety

      Yes. Before these the SID would have been the stronger contender for 120mm and the Lyrik at 150mm. Fox had the 130/40 sorted with the Fox 34 FIT4 damper. Or the CaneCreak Healm. This 2023 model puts RockShox back in the game at the 120-140mm range. They did a really good job of this fork.

    I see that you added a bunch of spacers to keep the fork tube long and raise the bars. The stack is the biggest (or only) problem with this bike. The headtube should be 25mm longer and the BB could drop 1 or 2mm. I put 30mm rise bars on mine and it still feels low. The stack is my only complaint. It's the best bike I've ever owned.

    • @Mapdec
      @Mapdec  Před 2 lety

      It’s ace. I would actually prefer the bars lower, but the brake levers hit the top tube because of the slack angle. Also, the fork is being used on a bunch of different bikes while we test, so keeping the steerer long.

      Hi! How much travel does your fork have? I also have a Sirius and I'm running a 130mm Pike Ultimate with the Charger 2.1 damper and the old 51mm offset. They say the frame is optimised for 100-120mm forks but it will take a 130mm fork sacrificing the geo numbers a bit.

    Hi! How come you chose a 130mm fork? I also run a 130mm Pike in my Sirius but I'm curious to try the new Pike with 120mm this time as I feel the bike may be a bit overforked. Is 130mm more plush than 120mm? I know it's only 10 mm but we all know that the bigger the air volume, the more supple the fork is. Any opinions?

    • @Mapdec
      @Mapdec  Před 3 měsíci +1

      The 130 is a bit long for the Sirius really. It was a fun experiment, but 120mm was much better. ‘Plushness’ more to do with the tune and freshness of service. You can set up a 130 to operate more in the mid stroke, but you tend to loose the supportive feeling a bit.

    • @Mapdec
      @Mapdec  Před 2 lety +1

      That’s probably the wrong way to phrase it. Even with low pressure they feel supportive. The initial suppleness is helped by the improved negative air and buttercups.

      @@Mapdec Depends on what one wants out of a fork. I want a buttery feel over ripples. From what I've read here and elsewhere preproduction samples don't give that.

    • @Mapdec
      @Mapdec  Před 2 lety +1

      These aren’t pre production. We were just early to receive the new fork. We paid for them. As for a buttery feel… I’d say that depends more on regular servicing and the compression damping in the mid stroke. Aside from the Cane Creak Healm 2 I can’t think of a fork with a better compression damper to fine tune the mid stroke compression. Maybe the Ohillins.
