- My favorite beach in Europe? Salema, on the Algarve - the south coast of Portugal.
It’s Day 39 of my 100-day trip to Europe, and I’m here to make sure our “Rick Steves Portugal” guidebook (store.rickstev...) is right up to date. It’s the end of May, the weather’s perfect, and there are no crowds. (Right after I shot this video, I bumped into a happy gang of four Americans using my guidebook - but I hadn’t seen a single American here before that.)
In this clip, you’ll hear me, in a moment of unbridled travel-writer ecstasy, declare Salema “the quintessence of a back door.” This little fishing village was one of 20 discoveries (I called them “back doors”) that made up the bulk of my very first guidebook, “Europe Through the Back Door,” in 1980. And thankfully, Salema is still great.

Rick, you look younger with a beard. I got my Keep on traveling' shirt when I was living in Tokyo, I passed unnoticed, then I moved to Italy for a year and a half and everyone loved you shirt, many Italians now about you. Now I am in Germany and German don't seem to recognize it, but plenty of Americans do.

I came to this video looking for a new cool place to live near the beach. I ends up that, I live in Faro, Algarve. So yeah, i think im in the right place. The Algarve is amazing!

We stayed here mid-May after hearing your earlier reviews. Absolutely wonderful spot. Spent 6 weeks in France. Germany, Netherlands, Turkey, Greece, Spain, and Portugal, self drive (Euro lease which I highly recommend). This place is way up there as one of the best places we stayed. Mid to late may is a great time to go, just before the tourist season. If you have a car take a day trip out to Sagres, if only for the "Last Frankfurt before America!"
PS your YT vids really helped in planning our European Holiday, Thanks so much. Would highly recommend your tours to those that aren't up to the "Do it yourself" thing. you know your stuff. PS Best seafood in Portugal, Nazarre, No question.

You’ve showed me parts of the world in Europe I never would have never seen until I travel to them. I’ve been to 17 other countries and islands of the world yet never Europe. We went in Algarve last May and it was awesome! Less crowded, beautiful weather and peaceful place to be in. Definitely one of my favorites!!

RICK spent the rest of the day planning the most balanced itinerary. Then he ate some mescaline and went swimming. The surf crashes in the distance... RICK cries out as he dives into the ocean. He lets himself float through the silvery bubbles... RICK FLOATS BEATIFICALLY IN THE GLOWING, SHIMMERING MOONLIT SURF.

Looks very similar to the beaches in Cornwall, Dorset, and Devon (... except, admittedly, those would be packed full of tourists whenever the weather is above 20c)

I went there last Summer no Americans an interesting place the beaches are full in August. This is where the British, Germans, French Portuguese, Irish & French go for vacation. Plenty of golf especially if you take a trip to Vilamoura the Disney of the Alrgarve. The beaches do get crowded in the Summer. You must take a boat ride to see the hidden beaches and weather beaten cliffs.

Nice video. Been wanting to go to the Algarve for years. I planned a trip in my head years ago, Fly to Lisbon and stay 2 days, 2 days in Algave, 2 days in Seville and 6 days in Morocco before going back to Lisbon 1 day before flying home. Just came bacck from my 5th trip to The Amalfi Coast / Capri ad visiting cousins in Salenrono. Love it. Love your books and videos, been following you since I bought Europe throuhg the Back Door in 1985. Keep up the great work Steve.

Loving that beard on you Rick. Thanks to all your videos my 3 months in Portugal 🇵🇹 were terrific. I learned so many things that helped right from the time I arrived. Not just points of interest and historical references (which I loved) but tips about the culture. Also, I purchased the Convertible carryon from your store (quite costly but I couldn’t find one I could get delivered to Portugal and their taxes literally doubled the price, it made my Travels from Portugal to England 🇬🇧 then home to Canada 🇨🇦 much easier. So, I just want to say Obrigada ~
