    Audiologist practices, unless their patient appointment are covered by healthcare system including Medicare, are going to operate in a manner that extracts as much money from the patient pockets as they can. Addressing HA issue, fitting and app usage in as many appointments as possible so the patient is paying more and more, even after the expensive HA and programming is done.

    Dr. Cliff,
    Cannot thank you enough! I watch your videos a lot and not sure how I missed this one!

    The problem is that when you ask even one of your Dr. Cliff list of local best practices audiologist whether they follow with these practices and centered-patient needs offered, no audiologist is saying, no we do not, sorry. All audiologist offices I have visited pretend to follow with best practices but nobody follow with all practices, neither offer a centered on patient needs approach. What they care mostly is to pass you through the basic practices, do some not personalized exactly fitting and are in hurry to send you home. If you want more attention during the first visit they are still sending you home and if scheduling a new appointment as an excuse implying they will help you maybe further after you pay more. No personal, patient-centered help and you know that?

    I NEEDED to see this video today. I think I fell into a rabbit hole of a Audiologist that isn't really following best practice. A month into a new Oticon Real 1 and she's not really helping me deal with it.
    Seeing this video explains it all. So now o need to start over before my trail period is over. Thank you Dr Cliff for telling us what to look for.

    I had a hearing test done by an audiologist who didn’t have a sound booth. The ear pieces were tight in my ear and he had me raise my hand when I heard a beep. So far so good. Then he wanted me to repeat the words he said and I told him before he started that his voice was echoing and hard to understand. He said it was okay and he spoke more directly into the microphone which help some and he kept going. I still didn’t hear him well and several words I couldn’t understand and repeat. I have never heard of no sound booth testing before. Is this a legitimate test? Has anyone else had this type of testing experience before?

    Everything in your video is absolutely true. I looked all over San Antonio Texas for an audiologist. Most of them didn’t know what best practices were or what real ear measurement was. Had to explain the process to them. Luckily, I found acro audiology on your website and I have an appointment with them.

    Thanks for this video! New to needing hearing aids...been using AirPods Pro the past 2 years. It's so confusing and honestly very shady out there in the HA world. Being 52, I've also seen blatant abuse / discrimination from these supposed "care professionals" with one audiologist stating "Gee, thanks for depressing me before my lunch" - when she saw my amount of hearing loss at 52 (She is in her mid 40's).

    Is Best Practices a term used in the hearing care business or is that something you developed that they may not recognize? Is there a more generic way to ask the question like Do you have a printed procedure list...or something like that.

    I recently returned some Oticon Real aids during the trial period because I had no faith at all the audiologist had programmed them properly, or would any other brands I might try, or if she had even reduced their settings to minimize my chances of returning them. I now have less trust in audiologists and it was a non-refundable $350 mistake. While I haven't yet tried another audiologist, presume this happened because I didn't look for "best practices" (or at least REM). What a bad experience.

      Thank you for your comment - sad that you are not alone. I trialed the Oticon 1 for 3 weeks and was convinced that they were not programmed properly because the only program that gave me reasonably accurate overall hearing was "Music", and of course you can't edit the program in any way without returning to the audiologist. The Oticon did a great job of passing environmental sounds - bird chirps, cat meows - and a great job dealing with wind noise, but the programs (other than Music) were not nearly as good as on my 4 year old Costco ReSounds. They should have been substantially better, or at least a real-ear measurement performed to show me how the programs were tuned properly. That was not done. The second pair I trialed - The Phonak - immediately had a charger problem and screechy programs all-around. The audiologist said she would call me when a replacement pair arrived. Never heard back from her.

    And what if a good hearing aid provider is 60 miles away from me?

    • @DrCliffAuD
      @DrCliffAuD  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Only 60 miles? Considering optimization of hearing aids takes only a few in-office visits, and there is virtual care available now, I wouldn't see that as a barrier at all.

    • @wan2852
      @wan2852 Před 8 měsíci

      Those I know with hearing aids seem to need lots of adjustments/repairs making 60 miles a burden to traverse. (Try that in the upper midwest in January... ). And making finding a good dealer a MUST kinda rules out online sellers, no? No Jabra for you, big fella! Little wonder many (most?) hearing aids don't end up in the night stand with spouses fuming.

    Thank you for this information. I was walking through Sam's Club with my grandma and she got roped into a salesman who offered a product that would save her $1800.
    I'm still not 100% sure that we will not go with that, but I am significantly more skeptical now. He definitely had dou...y sales pitch vibes and that's a massive red flag to me.

    This question is off-topic. Why are several brands of hearing aids sold by the same manufacturer? For example, Demant sells Oticon, Bernafon, Sonic and Philips. Are these hearing aids the same or markedly different? Why would a manufacturer sell competing products?

  • @RogierYou
    @RogierYou Před 11 měsíci

    I started to investigate hearing aids and this video that this is a high profit margine industry given the aggressive marketing practices… You cannot explain me why mass produced pieces of electronics have to cost $3000 - $7000 per pair! I bet there is a 1000% margine on this product between MGF and Retailer..

      This is my biggest fear in using hearing aids. As a musician, I fear that my $8,000 acoustic guitar will sound like it's coming from an old telephone speaker in the pursuit of speech clarity. I suppose I can always remove the hearing aids when playing music. Not an ideal solution.
