I was pretty excited for this ship at first but it is starting to give Tirpitz vibes. Horribly inconsistent but man when you can get it into the perfect situation for it to thrive it's going to be such a good time.
I wish I could find those situations more often lol 15 games and I've yet to just murder face in an all out brawl. I'm just chalking it up to the offensive power being too anemic to one hit KO anyone. Guess it should be more of a mid range brawler, area denial ship?

This ship feels like it would fit in pretty perfectly at tier 7, not 8. A little underbaked for the type of power/utility needed to cut it at 8 imo
I mean, it does fine, I just consistently perform 200× better in Rupperecht. I think PR takes the cake

Doesn’t really matter how good or bad a ship is in this game anymore, by the time you get done maneuvering into your starting position half your teammates are dead and you have 5 ships charging at just you. 😂

As someone who owns this on PC i can speak on this topic. On console this ship is a shell of the PC version.The guns,torps,EVERYTHING is better on PC. I have played it on console about a dozen times and am shocked at what a bad job wg did on implementing it on console. I will never take it out again.

You know California is Bad on PC but on console is one of the best bb for is tiers and other bb here on t8 they really suffers compare to there predecessor

Thank you for the great review and honest feedback...in the reviews I have watched, one ship jumps out to me...the Odin...which is my favorite ship in the game...this one is similiar...great armor, small fast firing guns, decent movement speed...of course Karl has the killer torps and better secondaries..but they play the same..this could be a heavy cruiser kind of playstyle or pure brawler...either way I dig it. :)

I am considering the KJ, but haven't put in anything except time for it at this stage. My great fondness for "weird" Premiums may be the final decider. :)
Hope it was helpful, I mean for 2500 dubs, a tier 8 premium is great imo and this one's definitely better than other campaigns (z44, Carnot, Pommern)
its Pan Euro so its going to be hard to play. Helfrich is my pick. spec concealment or movement with fully packed. 16-3 Fraser, 16-3 helhrich, and 16-2 Geparette will get you moving fast.

Seems like a great port ship, like a museum ship right? Basically a dust collector. I think Karl needs something too enjoy it which seems lacking at T8. I will try too enjoy it and make judgements when i unlock it. Cheers for the review mate 👍

I'm right there with ya on this and every ship we have vs the way they are on PC. We lose almost 50-60% of everything PC ships have on them...I play PC ships as well.

Derka quick question what formula are you using to calculate reaction time for torpedos? I’ve tried to convert knots to kilometers and working from there but I come up with a huge number so obviously doing something wrong.

Great video! Waiting to finish the campaign so I can test her out. Maybe having low expectations going into battle will make the ship feel better than it actually is? What is that? De-disappointed? Anyway, do you have any inside info on if it’s possible to earn enough planet clash credits (whatever they’re called) to get the T6 Achilles for free? I know they mentioned it in the official stream, but they didn’t break down the numbers. Thanks man! Again, great video!

Trust the HE my guy. This is pretty much Anhalt that trades a turret for more torp launchers. I love my Anhalt (with 65% WR). I play it exactly as you said, perma fires with your many gun barrels, kite/bait or full push with dakka depending on current situation, uppercut them with torps, or kite away angled and burn them to death.
Anhalt is more accurate and has bigger guns.
@@captainphilips5469 Actually not true, Karl has the same dispersion, but actually better sigma. Karl's HE DPM is greater. Anhalt's bigger guns doesn't translate to more damage when the shell damage value is so low

i too am very disappointed. ive been asking for this ship ever since it was first announced and its translation here is simply tragic. i think the devs grossly misunderstood the potential of the ship, and believed it would be stronger than it actually is, and as such gutted all the selling points of karl (i.e. its concealment and torp range). while i am happy that the ship is here in legends finally, its just such an extreme let down to see how they have molded the ship. and i too, run a main battery build and find the xp seemingly very low. its a sad state of affairs
Maybe that's why? I mean part of me thinks 13.5km torps and 2.4km better conceal would make this ship absolutely cracked...perhaps they didn't want another insane campaign ship (Jean Bart, Sommers CE, Mainz CE)

The days of us getting a superstar campaign ship are long gone. They’re not gonna put out something that really strong that they have to fix later. Some of the best ships in the game were campaign ships. Mainz, Wichita, Somers, Ochakov etc. sadly I missed those cause I was taking a break but I did get the Mainz. At this point I’m happy to get the campaign whatever the ship is. I like to have something to grind for and it really is a good deal plus if nothing else, next time Windroses come out, you’ve got another tier 8 ship which usually has the best rewards

Here’s what I don’t understand: What in the world does increased or decreased torpedo detectability even mean and what does it do especially when it comes to the third perk slot instead of picking concealment. If an enemy has torpedos that are detectable at let’s say 0.8 km how am I going to detect them sooner than that with “increased torpedo detection? It’s the same as having a 5.0 DD conceal and somehow being spotted at 5.5? Like one won’t see what they can’t see until the guaranteed range allows it. Same with increased detection of ships, idk

Hey Derka. After hours of gameplay with different builds (secondary build with Hipper and AL Bismarck), ans several hybrid builds i must say, these ship is not really good. It lacks and it is very inconsistent. AP is bad, secondarys pins nothing, even with Bismarck. So why i should take this ship when i have e Ruprecht in my port. He is better, on every stage!

@@DerkaGames yeah!!!. but dont get me wrong, with the Karl you can have fun and it is not a terrible ship. the best build for me to play is to go for the main batteries with AL Colorado and Cunningham as inspiration. At the end, Karl would be have a better place on T7!

I'm so surprised, I really thought this thing was going to be a banger. On paper it looks amazing. But the gameplay does not back it up. I haven't had this bad of a performing ship since...well ever at T8

I wonder if the Karl XIV Johan would work slightly better (emphasis on slightly) as a support ship...which I'll admit is not a very exciting concept.
I've seen a few comments out there comparing it to the Tirpitz, but as a long-time fan of that ship I can say that the Tirpitz is better in my opinion.
The way I see the Johan, if one has the Prinz Rupprecht, then the motivation to play the Johan disappears.

I don't spec into "secondary" ships. And this one's no different. High damage equates to more credits.
High XP equals more credits than high damage. That's how DDs always come top of the leaderboard without getting much damage.

I dont have the ship, but purely from watching CC's play with her you can definitely tell she is just a massive tease constantly blue balling you. Every single time you pulled the trigger in this game, I expected more oomph on hit, every time your secondaries took flight, I expected more fires, and every time you launched your torps, I felt let down when the mediocre damage numbers popped up.
What makes people want to play a ship is that dopamine feeling that comes whenever something unexpected or awesome happens. Karl just doesn't provide that, and constantly makes you feel let down whenever you expect something good to happen. Is she a jack of all trades that can do a little bit of everything? Sure. But if you feel blue balled every time you take her for a spin then what's the point?

Thats a pretty valid point and I think we agree entirely on why this ship doesn't seem to be performing. There just doesn't seem to be a knock out punch ability. Weak broadside from 305s, inaccurate and inconsistent secondaries, weak torp alpha

As a f2p player also who started 5 years ago(havent played that whole time though). You gotta pick and choose your campaigns very carefully to avoid these crappy boats. I personally have only got 'black' and 'republique' campaign, but yea, ggs for you. The only thing making me consider getting this is the very slight chance it gets buffed.😂😂😂
German HE is specific in a sense, and you mentioned this in the beginning. karl johan despite being a rupprecht clone with smaller guns has no improved HE pen secondaries and main battery HE, the trade off german HE has for this increased Pen is lower damage so using the Agir and german ships with 305s as a comparison shell wise can't be made accurate, the Ap on germans have a higher alpha base too, funny how you use Agir primary guns as an example when it's definitely based on a secondary battle-cruiser and the primary guns are tragically inaccurate. Good vid otherwise 👍

@@DerkaGames i love the design of schröder myself, but the game play does take a bit of getting use to. I personally stopped playing full secondaries, and start using muller for the Ap pen increase. It's actually doing much better for me that getting murdered brawling lol. However as soon as commander Augustin comes out again I'm definitely going to make a Ap pen build with him which should increase the pen by 11, and maybe with some adjustments in pen angles it'll make it really good 🤷♂️
Weak BB with tier IV guns (same as tier IV premium BB) and bonus is torps? Why bother if you can still simply play an Euro DD with better stats overall? Another Meh campaign reward.

Tanking isn't what German battlecruisers do. WG will buff that secondary/torp range if enough people like Derka keep getting the word out.

@@angelrambojr4587 yes, it's bad. But all German battlecruisers won't hold up to sustained fire. My main problem with her isn't the armor. It's that she can't put out any damage. Those main guns are terrible and her secondaries don't pen enough. She's a Ruprecht without teeth

I am disappointed in the reward/ loyalty ships the last 2 years though. I don’t expect a free legendary tier ship, but something that’s at least slightly above average, or maybe even historically significant would be nice. At least we have a captain for the Mysore thanks to Brisbane! Now I can test out Murray’s smoke skills…🙄. The ship seems kind of meh. Again. Thanks for your in depth, honest review. Always appreciate your opinions. I have most ships in the game as I’ve played since the beginning, but many just sit in port. I find myself watching random reviews of yours, then taking that ship out with your suggestions in hand.
