For those who don't know why maliketh covers his face. The description of the claw says that it deflects the power of the black blade, not parry. So it's essentially throwing the power of the blade back at maliketh. You can also see that when he uses it, it actually damages maliketh. Pretty interesting how Ranni thought of such a counter, and to give it to Rykard of all people.
Rykard is her brother, and he's probably the only person both capable and willing to challenge the gods in a way that helps ranni if her first plan fails.
I mean it's a pretty logical contingency given that Maliketh was almost certain to come after her, as for why Rykard he was opposing the Erdtree even before he gave himself to the serpent, so it makes sense that she'd include him in her conspiracy. I think most interesting is that it implies Ranni was on poor terms, or at the very least didn't trust, Radahn. As his reputation for might would have made him the more obvious choice for a champion of the two brothers had he been on side.

Ranni is anyway shown to be one of the colder, more distant demigods among her siblings.

It looks like you actually claw his face or eyes (with the claw) when you parry him. That's why he flails around for a bit after getting parried. If I'm not mistaken, this is the only parry that deals damage.
It's so weird how an item dedicated to letting you parry him only works for that one attack. If I didn't see this video, I would totally die a ton trying to parry everything he does.
The claw is really unclear about what it does, I was trying to figure it out and everyone seemed to think it was used to dispel the fire effect that happens after you get hit with some of his attacks.
I actually tried to parry his flying death slashes whatever many times and I just gave up because it wasn't working so I fought him to the death the way I usually do. XD

One thing I wish they did was to have a mode where you could just re-do boss fights again and again. Gives you a chance to really learn their move sets and try out different builds. Would be a fun idea I think
I think they wanted to give more incentive to try the multiplayer. I did love boss rematches in Sekiro. Genichiro is one of my favorite boss fights of all time.
Reminds me, since it wasn't clearly shown: the air swings are NOT the only parriable attacks, it works on *any* where the sword glows yellow. I was mystified when I saw a fellow phantom parry the pillar jump, but when I saw that the sword glowed yellow, it made sense. Learned it, practiced it, and then had a badass run a week later where I got 4 parries practically consecutively for my host.
I appreciate the clarification (on behalf of folks reading the comments) but just to point out, Ongbal actually did specifically state that the parries are for whenever his sword glows golden in the video, then demonstrated that a few times. 01:58 is the timing, inc you/anyone else missed that!

If you talk to D in the rountable hold with a deathroot he'll tell you how to get to him through a transporter near the third church of marika in limgrave. Once you give the beast clergyman enough deathroots he'll leave in search of more. Turns out he went to crumbling farum I guess.

I had gotten this item and actually read its description before I beat him, but I didn't try it much. I had thought it had to do with his red beams or something but wow that's really specific. Thanks for showing how to properly use it! Maybe I'll try this on my new game plus :) Great video
I used this guide and started co-oping and I’ve gotten decent at parrying him. It makes the fight much easier because of the massive damage you can inflict while he is staggered.

I never used the Blasphemous claw before because I figured the parry window was super tight but after seeing this, it took only 1 attempt to get it down (I can't parry that slow wind-up swing he does occasionally that SOMETIMES shoots out a destined death blade, and sometimes doesn't, but his two aerial ones, I can do no problem). If Fromsoftware adds an "Insane" option to the difficulty level, with bosses having extremely parrying skills like Ongbal, I don't know if there is anyone who can finish such a game. Watching your videos always makes me think that Elden Ring is such an easy game. And every time I try to parry the attack of a boss, I always end up dead from one or two attacks.
I managed to parry him once. It was completely unintentional, and pure adrenaline, but it was probably the coolest thing I've done in this game so far.
that's a fuckin lie bro. you cannot parry him unintentionally. you have to have the item equipped and ready to activate, and wait for the right attack pattern and have the timing down. no need to lie dude
Yeah same here I actually one shot him with my fists and he was stunned so I decided to give him a chance and he did the attack you can parry and I partied without even trying. Then a model walked in my room and we made out. She is now my wife.

@@BMAChannel. I think it’s a bit overrated due to unbalance. Melee in elden ring is one of the hardest things to do in elden ring. I’m not talking about weapon arts, those are broken, but going at a boss normally is near impossible. It doesn’t help that the camera for melee is god awful. Half the time the real boss fight is against the camera. Not to mention gank bosses, and the reused bosses are the worst parts of the game. It’s still very solid, 100% GOTY worthy, but people are making it out as like THE perfect game
@@Chadius_Thundercock even as a mage you get fucked by some bosses. Some are insanely resistant to magic, rendering your build useless, and some close the gap too quickly for you to cast ANYTHING.

@@nomongosinthaworld ER has DS3 parry timing and style, but improved alot, so it's still more forgiving than ds3, sekiro on the other hand, built around deflecting, so it has to be more forgiving than ER, where parrying is the highlight of melee combat skills
Tbh Sekiro parrying skill doesn’t translate well to parrying with startup frames; especially when the parry window is smaller and messing up can easily lead to a loss. Though it’s still more than nothing for sure.
I love parrying bosses, so when I failed to parry Maliketh a thousand times, I felt like the absolutely worst. Only now I realize you cant only parry a few attacks 😂 This already happened to me with the old knights in heide tower at the start of DS2
I've had him randomly do the glowing sword move out of no where with no combo beforehand. He just jumped on a pillar and then his sword was glowing gold.
Would it be possible to get a showcase of your ingame settings, and maybe pc settings outside the game? Game looks buttery smooth, and im interested to know if you have done anything about the input lag.
If you can time him well enough to use this item, you've already learned the boss fight enough that you might as well just beat him without it at that point.
