This song was written for patti smith by Bruce Springsteen. I can remember the first time it came out. Sends shivers down my spine [edit] see the wiki why not. So he wrote it and couldn't finish it and the producer asked him if patti could use it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Because_the_Night
I was under the impression that Bruce wrote the song for himself for his Darkness On The Edge Of Town album, but he decided not to put it on the album. The great producer, Jim Iovine was producing Springsteen and Smith at the same time and he suggested that Patti sing the song. Patti wanted to change some of the lyrics, Bruce was ok with that, thus she got a cowriter credit.

Seriously Alicia Keys just doesn't have a rock and roll voice built for this song. Beyonce covered Proud Mary once and it just wasn't right either because its just important that a style of voice compliments the song it's in. Alicia was built to sing the music she normally sings.
