My mom was a part of the Jersey Shore scene back in the day. Had many mutual friends and more with Bruce. She thought he was an incredible talent, but felt he thought he was God's gift to women...and every time I see this video, I think, well, where is the lie?! Isn't he? 😂 What couldn't that man do! Incredible songwriter, guitarist, lyricist with movie star good looks and a 🍑 that perfectly creased those Levi's. They didn't call him The Boss for nothin'. 🥰
Clearly a gift to woman❤
I can’t believe I’ve never heard this version, that intro was other worldly 🤤 ✨
He wrote this song and Patti Smith put her touches to it to make it her huge hit.
Didn't know it either. Its nice
Same here , totally agree ! And the ending ain't bad 😎
Nice description. Other worldly. Love it. It's like the Jersey Shore sound if New Jersey was on Mars :) Such a great intro.
@@michaelehrhart9670 you mean the entirety of the lyrics 😂
One of the most haunting intros ever... the way the piano and guitar blend is simply genius.
And then Sax+guitar after the 2nd chorus =)
No it’s not
@@crypastesomemore8348 Excuse me Mr. Borkowski, yes it is.
The intro is boring and uninspired.
@@jrcoffeyII Yeah, but you probably aren't very fun eat parties, are you?
A Bruce concert is not just a concert, it's an experience!
TRUTH! first time I saw him and E Street Band was back in the 70's at Rutger's University.....OMG....they about TORE THAT PLACE down.....amazing! I am STILL missing Clarence Clemons BIG TIME!
The best concert I ever attended was Bruce Springsteen.
The second best concert I ever attended was Bruce Springsteen.
I don't know how anyone could top either of those, no lie.
In the 1970s it was a RELIGIOUS experience!
His albums are also great, he's like the most passionate poet EVER!!

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band recorded "Because the Night" at Atlantic Studios, New York on June 1, 1977, the first day of sessions for Darkness on the Edge of Town, though the lyrics only consisted of the song title and some mumbling. Springsteen struggled with the song almost four months until his engineer, Jimmy Iovine, got involved. At the time, Iovine was also producing the album Easter for Patti Smith at the Record Plant, New York, where Darkness was being recorded at the same time.
Iovine says, "Now, Bruce was very understanding and very flexible, because he realized that this was my first real break as a producer. Anyway, one night whilst we were lounging around the Hotel Navarro in New York I told Bruce I desperately wanted a hit with Patti, that she deserved one. He agreed. As he had no immediate plans to put ‘Because the Night’ on an album, I said why not give it to Patti. Bruce replied, ‘If she can do it, she can have it.’"
Springsteen later admitted he was not satisfied with the song, and he already knew he wasn't going to finish it since it was "a[nother] love song";.[4] Iovine brought Smith the last recording by Springsteen, from September 27, 1977. Smith added her own lyrics, recorded it for her album Easter, and scored her first and biggest hit single.
The song was first performed live at a Patti Smith concert at CBGB's in New York City on December 30, 1977 (Patti's 31st birthday) with Springsteen joining on vocals and guitar.[5] Though it was never released on any of Springsteen's studio albums, in concert beginning with his Darkness Tour Springsteen would often perform the song with his own lyrics. To date, he has performed it 503 times in concert.[6]
The only two commercially released recordings of a Springsteen version of the song were in the 1986 box set Live/1975-85, where Smith was listed as co-writer; and the 2010 compilation album The Promise (using the original recording from the Darkness on the Edge of Town sessions, but using Smith's lyrics).
Awesome! 👍
BECAUSE THE NIGHT
is a very beautiful song
its one of my favorite song of
the Boss, though Thunder Road is my national anthem, and Prooove It All Night is my
Bruciest song ever!
@Andrew L. Thank you for this excellent background!
Iovine produced the 3 greatest American rock N roll albums of all time...Born 2 run, Easter and Damn the Torpedos...end of story.
Amazing background, thanks. I love both Bruce and Patti’s versions. And having spent many nights at CBGB and so many clubs on Bleeker St, it all makes sense. Awesome stuff !!
This INTRO 😮🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Springsteen is the fucking man. My high school best friend turned me on to all sorts of amazing music, from his father. He passed but was a really great guy.
@Trumpsuckscock boddy what else was Tour high school best friend’s father a fan of, besides Springsteen 🤔
biden is gay
The intro with the guitar/keyboard duo is truly beautiful.
Yes... I LOVE this style!
VictorAV. Bom om om om om omom
my favorite version!
What about the awesome guitar solo at 5:08?
Tele with analog delay
Great sound
Good Lord that man was magical on that guitar!!!
Saw him in concert 3 times. Hands down THE best concerts I've ever been to. He played for 4 hours, with about a 20 minute break in the middle. I left there exhausted.
You need to get out more!
@@jrcoffeyII And you need to mind your own business.
Hello, how are you doing today? Thanks for your love and support…
I know what you mean Teresa - saw him twice, first time in late ‘70’s at Southern Illinois University - performance much like this - playing with reckless abandon - I’ll never forget nor can adequately explain the experience
@@jrcoffeyII don’t get your comment. Seen him once. He was excellent. Not the best concert I’ve seen, but excellent nonetheless.
This was recorded the year I was born, and tonight is the first time I’ve heard this version... Now I know beyond a shadow of a doubt why they call him The Boss. Simply a masterpiece…
@yumpladukfoo fuck off u fuckin no good troll
@yumpladukfoo I bet you're fun at parties!
They call him The Boss because he used to make sure all the band got paid when doing bar gigs. We call him God because of songs like this

Absolutely brilliant...His intros are some of the best in musical history!
This is the version i was looking for all these years....finally found it
If there is a band in heaven I hope it's the e street band
❤️
Hello, how are you doing today? Thanks for your love and support…
God damn that was magical!
that Intro... really awesome !!!
I read a good article in Billboard Magazine from about 2018 recently. About Patty Smith's recording of this song (with her changes to some lyrics). I was happy to see she repeatedly called it BRUCE'S song, his gift to her. She gushed about Bruce in the article and his song writing skills. I knew it pretty much made her career but it turns out it totally changed her life- and continues to. Bruce had already written two songs specifically for her to record but she had declined them both. But he gave her his recording of this song and and the very first time she ever heard it she new instantly that it was going to be a hit. She was just unsure about whether or not she wanted to have a hit record with a song she had not written herself. So she spent a couple of hours changing some of the lyrics and the next day she decided to put it on her album. It ended up making her famous and giving her and her band it's first financial success.
Springsteen is a great guitarist, very underrated.
Being that good and arguably being the third best in the band is saying something
So.... now I remember Bruce Springsteen.... He was the guy who was so good, he could give away a song of such quality that he never regretted it. So much talent.
His new manager shut that habit down real quick. He tried to give "Hungry Heart" to the Ramones and it was no go.
@@zippymufo9765 Pity. I would've loved to hear a Ramones version of Hungry Heart.
He said he was having trouble finishing this one. Patti Smith took it over the top. Two top tier artists
good lord! the energy. the voice...the guitar . teh songwriting! there was nothing like it in 1978(!!!)...
Joy Division
@@psytechs or since, either.
Man, Springsteen's guitar was bloody haunting in that intro. Beautiful.
Saw him in Cardiff three days ago absolutely awesome 👌
I was a 19 year old at ASU when I first saw Bruce in 1975 on the Born To Run tour. It literally changed my life.
In my opinion, no one can hold a candle to him live in concert...maybe Prince.
Springsteen is the best songwriter of all time. Just read the lyrics to Thunder Road or Jungleland.
Pure poetry.
love the words to Thunder road
Agree
Or Backstreets, or Incident on 57th Street, or Racing in the Street, or Long Walk Home, or Girls in their Summer Clothes, or You're Missing, or If I Should Fall Behind, or Wreck on the Highway, or Stolen Car, or Across the Border, or Land of Hope & Dreams, or.., or.., heck, throw a dart
The River is great too.
Badlands as well.
OMG absolutely brilliant guitar solo by The Boss but is that Roy Bittan on the piano? Freakin' 3 minutes of nonstop playing and he doesn't miss a beat. I've had this intro on repeat for at least a week now. Never gets old. 🎤🎧🎹🎸🎼
Federici
I've been back to this intro several dozen times since I discovered it a couple months ago. ♥️♥️♥️
I'm quite glad that I saw him perform that song in 2023.
It's my bitter regret i couldn't see him live in 78....but i live in Europe and in 78 only Americans saw him! He and the band were at their best....meraviglioso❤❤❤
I saw him in 1980 in the rain at Red Rocks.
It was a miserable experience, (I was not prepared for the cold rain in august and less than 10 years old), I was cold and miserable but that was my first rock concert and Springsteen set the bar so high it has never been met.
Im upset that i never knew he was a Beast on the Guitar, Holy Sh*t 😳🤟
Watching this for the first time was like watching that video where Prince dominates Guitar Gently Weeps and finding out you should re-evaluate your entire take on Pop musicians.
Is there a better live performer than Bruce!!! The magnetism of this man is something. For those who say that he is an average guitarist....who cares, this is how build a melody.
Jesus Christ that was incredible. This is up there with his Thunder Road duet with Melissa Ethridge.
Everytime I discover a new performance/version of his it floors me. Absolutely stunning!
One of the best versions ever
this particular guitar lick by Bruce...on another planet in my opinion
That ‘78 tour was magical
Dear God. What this man has given us for just, oh I dunno, almost 50 years.
Magnificent Bruce Springsteen, rock and roll icon. Greetings from Serbia.🤘
Listening in 2024 - this performance the year of my birth & we’re both ageing like fine wine 😂 absolute perfection 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Absolutely top bananas with a little sprinkling of zazziness on top
Say whatever anyone wants but this is the best version of this song. Enjoy
Breathtaking!
this is awesome. I have the same shirt - thats where the similarity between me and Bruce ends.
Mike...LMAO! Great comment.
Can come back to this song over and over. When Bruce breaks into the solo at 5:08 it looks like a musical display and showcase for the whole universe representative of what members of the the human species are so amazingly capable of. Like we came a long way on this blue rock to rock out to our deepest of heartfelt emotions.
What a song and the beginning just melts my brain 👏 im not part of my dads generation but he taught me to love real music and I'm going to 100% percent carry on doing that for the rest of my life.
99.98%
I could listen to that intro over and over and over again 🤍🤍🤍🤍
I was there as a young kid . It was the second time on the darkness tour I saw him. Just unbelievable. Legend!
That intro is the sexiest music to me ✨✨✨
I discovered this version last year, and I'm frequently coming back just for the intro. It's pure magic and I lack of finding a proper word to describe how I'm feeling listening to this
Wheeewweee can I ever relate to this comment, I've replayed it the entire night to myself since I just discovered it. It's 2:30 AM and went to my car because I can't get it loud enough in the house, folks are sleepy but I just can't help but feel the music, it's too beautiful for the entire world to not hear, if I had speakers that loud, I'd get em right where they needed to be to share the sounds of such beautiful soul ❤️
God damn I never knew Bruce could shred!
I know right! When he busted out that quality solo I sat bolt upright.
It's only because the rest of his cosmic talent tends to eclipse his mere mastery of the guitar. If all he did was play guitar, he would still be a legend, add in all the rest and you have The Boss.
Finally got my husband to a Springsteen concert in 99’ and the first song was Badlands, first thing he said was I didn’t know he played guitar!
Never forget seeing Bruce for the first time in September of 78 on the Darkness tour. I went into the show with great admiration for him as a songwriter but as a guitarist? Not so much! That night he blew the roof off the arena with this song and of course the Darkness tour version of "Prove it all night". I left the show with a greater respect for the man as a guitarist
This intro gives me goosebumps every-time I hear it !
JESUS CHRIST i had no idea springsteen was a savage like that
Never seen him live? I pity you.
Man he's THE BOSS FOR A REASON
@@kindnessfirst9670 my father has watched him perform.. I haven't 😥
Listen "Ghost of tom joad" with him and tom morello
They are savage
Behold the phallic power of the guitar in capable hands!
When you're such a great songwriter that the stuff that doesn't make it on your album becomes a top twenty hit for someone else...twice
i love that he sold such fantastic pieces to women
Because The Night and Blinded By The Light?
For how much I love the boss, I would not say "stuff that does not make it on your album"... the song was written by Springsteen and Patti Smith (I think it's her lyrics actually) he didn't just hand it over!
@@Euegoria He did
@@Euegoria Yes, she co-wrote her version, but they didn't write it together. Springsteen originally wrote it while writing the Darkness on the Edge of Town record. The reason that didn't make the record wasn't that it wasn't good enough, but he felt like it didn't go with the rest of the songs on the record.
The was a pretty good guitar solo - not over played, simple, matches the enegergy of the song rather than pushing technical ability. Love that.
Fookin top quality...some channels say he never played it this early but this proves it, slightly different lyrics but still a quality performance....magical!
A masterpiece.... No doubt!!!! Thanks again boss
Bruce seemed to have always be an under appreciated guitarist. I guess his music and lyrics got all the attention but he was a great lead.
So much emotion! ❤️
Holy Sh*t!! Bruce really NAILED that one!
Best version of the song i have ever heard!
Boss is shredding on this song. He’s a real guitar player.
I never heard of this dude. Be watching more! I love this.
29 years old, already legendary and a looooong journey of rock n roll to come
The Boss makes life worth living. ✨I woke up with this song in my head 🖤
That intro tho 👌
I woke up randomly finding and subsequently listening to this song just today!
I love you Bruce Springsteen from a small town Illinois fan. ❤

Amazing, beautiful performance best live version ever🔥❤🥰❤🎸🎷❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
This beginning is like the end of Jerry Garcia's Standing on the Moon: it's like you're hearing a guitar for the first time. Brilliant
Epic Springsteen! What an awesome live performer!
Nice raw version and man he can shred. Love it.
I first heard the song by Patti Smith and I didn't know that Bruce wrotte the song. Then in 1985 when I became a Bruce Springsteen And The E-Street Band Fan,when I saw Bruce in Frankfurt,I heard the song for the first time live and It blew me away.Still to this day I get shivers down my spine when I hear that song.I love everything about the song》The Lyrics, the playin of the E-Street Band, and Bruce Singin And The Guitarwork,This song is on fire,oh Yeah~Mindblowin🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Bruce wrote the melody and some of the working man lyrics. Patti took it to a new level with her lyrics. Took it into an anthem of true love.
Superb.........masterpiece
I could have this intro on repeat for hours upon hours and never will it get old to me... I needed to discover something beautiful today and I've found it. It gives me chills every single time. Thank you to all our beautiful, talented people out there doing great things for all of those that will always love, live and keep the music alive.
He's my lifetime hero. Everything from the heart!
We need The Boss back on the stage!
This era of the E street band is absolutely fire

Wowwww! Wowwwww! Extraordinarily great! Look at Bruceeeee 😍😍😍😍😍😍
Springsteen was a menace in concert in the 70s.
I saw Bruce Springsteen do a surprise walk-on at CBGB's on New Year's Eve 1977. They brought the house down.
A quality of work so high that he could give away stuff like this
Only this song would be worth the ticket.

Yup. All eight dollars of it.

.Can't wait. Be my 5th time seeing him live.
More than a song. It' s a statement.
What a moment in time
I saw him play it way back in 2005, the first time I saw him and it (along with Jungleland) was one of the two highlights of the concert for me. That night it was Nils Lofgren who played the solos & he blew me away. It would also be the only time I saw Clarence play & I regret that I never saw Danny live. It´ll never really be the E street band again without the original line up, but that´s life.
Phrankster163 got to see Danny and Clarence on the Magic tour. Lucked out. It was a great show.
Dreamlike this guitar-intro. How positively playful he is
I was at this concert. Center section about 12 rows from stage. Sometime in December before Christmas. I was exhausted by the time it ended
That intro is everything! The music in general is awesome. Even though PS is known for this song, it's all Bruce. Love that he wrote this. His lyrics are always incredible. Bruce killed it that night!
Lyrics that made this song a hit and known were Patti Smith's. So, not all BS like you said. Sorry, Patti Smith interpretation, voice and lyrics are way better. BS gave up on this song until Patti Smith saved it.
They are both amazing
Bruce had the song for a long time but couldn't finish it, in fact he only had the melody and the chorus...he gave it to Patti because he said if she could do something with it she could have it. She finished it and Bruce was delighted so he recorded it with her lyrics...he has performed it hundreds of times with Patti's lyrics
