  • Martin Parr is joined by documentary photographer Czesław Siegieda (Jan) in the latest Sofa Session to be released.
They discuss how Jan's access to the post-war Polish community in Britain allowed for him to make such intimate photographs, and what everyday life was like for the community - including the discrimination and prejudice that they were subject to.
They also touch upon the process of Jan's photobook becoming a reality and how, despite the work first being shown in 1977, the photobook ‘Polska Britannica’ was only published in 2020 by RRB Photobooks.
The book is available from the foundation’s bookshop: www.martinparrfoundation.org/...
Examples of Czesław’s work can be seen on his website: czeslawsiegieda.co.uk
Produced by the Martin Parr Foundation.
Filmed and edited by Alexander Parkyn-Smith

Excellent interview and talk. I like the way Martin Parr interviews, asks essential questions and brings his guest to talk. I have been following Czeslaw Siegieda on Instagram for quite some time. I adore his photography.

Thanks for the kind words @RolfMeier. We are very glad to have been able to give you some discussion and context to the work. Czesław has a very engaging instagram feed and it a great account to follow. How did you first come across his work? Was it on instagram?

I recently took delivery of your “Irish” book, sneaky the way you managed to get Jan to compare his photos to your Irish photos. It worked in that I now must have his book!!

    What an interesting encounter.
It would have been nice to include a few shots from the book to give additional context to the discussion though.

Yes I've mentioned this several times I'm not sure they're not included. Each time I come to these videos I have to stop the video, open a new tab, google the photographer, check out a few photos and then come back and start it again. Seems a no-brainer to sprinkle a few shots as the photographer talks. A superb interview as always - another photographer I knew nothing about but with excellent photos.

Hi @bebox7 and @CuriousGecko, thanks for your comments. We make sure to include links to the photographer's work in the caption to the films to make it easy for you to see examples of the work. We are keen that the focus of the discussion is on the practice, life and experience of the photographer and avoid a show and tell of particular images. It is great to have your feedback and if you want to see more of photographers images talked about we can recommend our artist talks series where photographers often talk through their work. You can find out more about these on our website.

Parr is an excellent photographer. He should leave interviewing to professionals.
