CZcams hadn't recommended any of your vids in a long while and then boom! Recommends this one and all solved all my problems. Thank you.
This is the best video on how to adjust your rear derailleur on CZcams................finally it makes sense and my gears now work perfectly, Thanks
Here is a newer video I made if it helps too:
czcams.com/video/sqFk69_Gkg4/video.html
Good on you Clint. I was wrestling all weekend with my gear changing. Watched all the videos studiously and followed them accurately to no avail. Your mention of gears changing OK one end of the cassette and not the other is a sign of a bent derailleur hanger was the light bulb moment! Now fixed.
Thx for the detailed guide. Other videos cover portions, you covered everything in a very comprehensive fashion. For the first time ever I am confident I know which way to turn the barrel knob!!
Great video, Clint. I really enjoy watching your videos, you explain things very clearly and it just feels great listening to an intelligent person.
Best video I 'be seen on adjusting rear derailleur thank you.
There is a cartoon light bulb lighting up over my head after watching this. I have watched several videos on this, and yours is the first that really explains the relationship between cable tension and specific symptoms. Thanks.
Idea for another video: how to develop a relationship with your LBS
Another video I would watch: Riding and maintenance concerns with riding in the rain. thanks.
Thank you very much for recording this tutorial. It definitely will improve my saturday rides.
Great video! As a relatively noob in bike mechanics, trying to learn the skills required to maintain my bike, I find rear derailleur adjustments to be the most enigmatic. The biggest problem I had to overcome is trying to understand how much tension there needed to be on the cable when on the smallest cog when trying to dial in my indexing. I used to pull it taut with some pliers. That made it too tight to the point where there wasn't enough slack in the barrel adjuster range to compensate. It's hard to describe how much slack there should be initially, but I have gotten to have a pretty good feel for it over the last few months. Thanks for some great videos.
Excellent video. I have the same derailleur and was able to get it working to perfection while watching this. Nice bike, as well!
Fantastic tutorial, explaining the effect of each adjustment! I, too, will buy a new derailleur hanger, based on your last tip.
thank you adjusted my same derailleur a couple of days ago using your video after i dropped my chain into the spokes.
Yeah Thanks Awesome vid! The chaos on you tube on how to perform this procedure about drove me nuts! you speak english and your patience and knowledge great! Thanks alot! And I am subscribing to your channel!
Very much like your videos Clint. Thoroughly explained and very informative. Thanks!!!
Thank you so much! Best video i found so far!!
Thank you sir for this. You actually explain properly how this works.
Great video! You saved me from going to my LBS everytime I need to make a small adjustment. Thanks again for the video.
Leslie bike shop?
Major fan of your videos Clint, thanks!
Gibby comes through again! Man he’s good. I refuse to take my bike to the shop anymore no matter how bad my problem. Watch me some Gibby videos and I’m back up and running with proper tools and parts! Gibbs for Pres 2020
Best explanation I have seen, thank you so much.
again, fantastic video. Thanks Clint.
Excellent video, helped me a lot
Thank you
I just got a bike where the rd shifted terrible it is a shimano acera on a rockhopper with all suntour components I found on the internet that you can’t mix components usually ,following your video I was able to get the rd to shift close enough for me and I thank you
Excellent. Thanks. I’m used to SRAM now days
Thanks for the great explanation. Perfect for a bike maintenance noob like me :)
Extremely helpful, thank you!!
Excellent.
Thanks Clint!
Best video about this topic i ever seen
Excellent, clear and concise 👍
Best video out there on this topic!
Clint, that is a super clean bike.
Always very good videos, man
Great video, thank you for that 👍🏻
Thank you for the great video!
Excellent. Answered all my queries.
This deserves a sub and a like, good job and sweet ride.
Really nice video! Thank you very much!
Greta tutorial - thanks.
Great video man! Thanks :)
Great videos !! Very easy to understand and follow. Of course what I'm saving on repair cost , I'm looking to spend on some upgrades. I have had my Kona 29er now for over a month riding mostly weekends.
I'm thinking of doing a 1x10 conversion I never ride in the big front Cog anyway.
Keep up the grade videos
Thanks Clint.
THANK YOU SOOOOOOOO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO. I'M SO THANKFULL. THANK YOU
Thanks for a great video
Great tutorial thank you
Great advice ,the actual info you need .good voice sounds similar to kevin costner.
great video! thank you very much!
Excellent video sir
Great one :) Thank you Clint
Great video thanks.
hey clint great video. I just replaced my slx shifter with a new XT shifter and new cable, using existing slx derailleur. I have a 1x11 17 trance 2. after installing the new shifter and just reused the housings, the shifting became rough and the second largest sprocket was making clicking noises. I still can't figure out the xt shifting double up/down,etc. Funny just replacing the shifter can effect the drivetrain so drastic, it was shifting perfect before the XT install. thanks for the help brother.
Very helpful!
good info Clint.
awesome vid, thanks mate
4 years later and it s always usefull ;)
So helpful, thnx mate!!!!!!!!
Helpful thank you!!
Great explanations!! Adjusting derailleur always frustrate me.
Thank you so much, I can't believe anyone disliking this video, poor miserable people. Thanks again for your time, I am going to give it a go.
One of the best video on this subject! Thanks a lot 😊
Tfiuuu
hey clint, you mentioned adjustments on H and L screws, cant find if talked about the screw on the right side, I guess its for height adj, what is that for? Also as much as you ride, how do you keep your cassette so clean, geez! lol. Love the vids!
What does the screw do that’s next to the limit screws? Seems like mine just lifts it up and down. I got my bike adjusted pretty good thanks to your video but on the biggest gear on the cassette the chain seem to be off a little bit on the little pully wheels. Any idea what could cause this? Maybe bent
Great video Clint. Very clear explanation of how to adjust the rear dérailleur. Really like the look of your shifters. What brand and model are your shifters?
Shimano XT shifters on my Anthem and Shimano SLX on my Trance
Excellent, clear and concise explanation Clint, thank you. After years of paying the bike shop I'm going to have a go myself. Any chance of doing something for the front using your Trance?
Yeah, I'll do one for the front in the next week or so.
Hey clint. i just bought a new bike (2015 Giant Stance 27.5) and im going to go to a 1x setup... on my old bike i had a raceface 34T chainring and a 1x9 setup but that was on 26" wheels.
I was wondering what chainring and cassette do you use?
I was thinking 34T chainring and just keep my 11/36 cassette.
Hi, thanks for a great video. Could you advise about B screw - how it should be aligned? Thanks.
For Sram mountain bike 12 speed there is a little tool you need to use for the b screw adjustment. It's very finicky on these drivetrains. On other drivetrains, you basically use the screw to take slack out of the chain and to keep the pulleys from being too close to the cassette. I have not made a video yet specifically for b screw but I need to do so. There are a few good ones out there on CZcams so at this point if you need to adjust it I would do some searching.
Thanks 😊
When using a 10 or 11 speed use a S-ram chain they are narrower and will not rub the cogs i will do this when i change the chain
Another great video! Could you do the one on front.
Yep, front coming soon....
Premium video 👌🏼
I've been watching as many videos on basic mechanics as I can find. For whatever reason I struggle to get the shifting smooth. This is by far the best video on this subject I've found. I will probably watch it a couple more times to get it to sink in. Thanks for doing this. I watched one you have on putting a new chain on. Do you have a video on repairing a chain that breaks on the trail? Also, do you have one on adjusting mtb breaks? Thanks again for the time you put into this.
+Barry Rodbell try this one:
czcams.com/video/hBdJYX8tICA/video.html
+Barry Rodbell no specific Trailside video for a chain yet, but this may help
czcams.com/video/TpHhJtW8aPA/video.html
Barry Rodbell Are rear hangers a standard fit / size
You usually have to get the one made for your frame.
what about the angle of attack of the chain.. the third isolated screw on the derailleur besides the H and L .?
Very good informative video as usual. I dont know what kind of camera you are using, but if there is something to reduce windnoise I think it would make your video go from 9/10 to 10/10 as far as audio/video goes. (Content is at 10/10)
Thanks. This camera probably does. I've used it on other cameras but the problem is it really cuts down how well you can hear the other audio. But I may give it a shot. Cheers.
Iv been using your videos to help me do my first bike build iv been riding for a while and now trying to start building and working on my own bikes. I have a question about installing my rear derailleur. how much tension should i have in the cable when i attach it from shifter to rear derailleur
Just enough to get it to shift from the smallest cog to the next one, of that makes sense. My XT rear derailleur has no tension on it.
Great Video Clint. My shimano xt slips when I go down to the small cog on the front but not when I am on the big cog at the front. Any ideas on this please?
If you have two front chain rings make sure you do not cross chain. That is, if you’re on the big ring don’t try to go too far towards the big cog in the back
@@ClintGibbs Thanks Clint, will need to do a bit of tweaking. Working fine on the big chain ring at the front but problems with slipping on little chain ring when on steep ride.
Hi there, can i use two different jockey wheel sizes in the same derailleur on a bike? thanks
Great thanks. There is another screw near the high and low limits, that pushes on the hanger. What is it for?
+Tim Simmons that's the b screw that adjusts the angle of the derailleur. You were typing it if do you derailleur pulley is rubbing against the largest cog. If there is a gap between the pulley in the largest cog you would loosen the screw.
I know your components are slightly different but have you ever had an issue with shifting on your shimano MTB stuff using a sram chain? I broke my chain after 25 miles on my new giant trance three and stuck a new SRAM pc 1031 on and it shifts like crap in the rear and now likes to drop chains up front. It had the kmc 10 speed chain on with the deore stuff from the factory and worked flawlessly and never dropped a chain. Chain length is right, derailleur is adjusted properly. I put the old chain that I repaired back on to test for the sake of my sanity and back o shifting flawlessly. Is this a case of no cross compatibility between sram and shimano?
you need shimano chain for shimano derailleur.
mine shifts up to the bigger cogs just fine, when I shift back to the smaller cogs It takes about 1to 2 minutes before it gets to the smallest cog.
I have the same rear derailleur, but it has a problem with getting to the 4th or 5th cog, it gets skipped on the way up and down when shifting. Would adjusting the tension on the shiftee fix it or the high and low set screws?
+Greg S my first thought is that your derailleur hanger is bent. There's a special tool you can use to check it but you probably need to take it into the shop.
Good video. Does it have any clutch? I just bought a bike with this same xt drllr, and I cant find any clutch around...
I think all newer Shimano mountain bike derailleurs have a clutch.
Yes, I know that. The thing is that I bought a secon hand bike, with the same rear xt drllr as in the video. I dont think its a newer drllr, thats why I asked you if this one in the video has a clutch? Thanks
@@rockylugo2193 I had to go back and watch that video since it was so old. It did not have a clutch.
Thanks Clint. Appreciate your time.
I like the sound of your hubs. Wat brand is that?
+Yin Ching/Dave Tan Stan's Neo Ultimate
Clint Gibbs thank You
My bike shifts well but I still get that annoying sound from the rear gears. Does that mean that I still haven't managed to adjust it or is something bend?
+peripextis the drivetrain should be fairly quiet. The Only Exception is in the very largest cog sometimes makes a bit of a grinding noise. All other gears should be quiet. If it shifts well and one range of the cassette but not in the other than that's a sign that your derailleur hanger may be bent.
Well! I get that grinding noise across the whole range of the cassette. I used to get that until one of the chain links got stuck. After I shortened it by one link the noise is even louder. Could it be the chain (KMC X10)? I haven't replaced it as it is less than a month old. It is not streched and the cassette is like new.
I assume both the cassette and chain are both 10 speed? Dumb question but I have to ask. Other than that make sure there is not a link that is stiff or bent.
I have Shimarno 1x10 derailleur does the bottom gear change lever alwys change the biggest gear (low gear) up the cassette. I cannot get it set up .
Yes, the bottom lever always pushes the derailleur towards the bigger cog which is the easier gear. Make sure when you set it up that the cable is all the way loose. In other words, keep hitting the small lever as you pull the cable. Then set up the derailleur
@@ClintGibbs Thanks sorted it & got a good ride in today 👍
Clint, what does it mean when the chain skips on the rear cogs during hard pedaling? The mtb bike is new and the derailleur hanger is straight. Thanks
+forgedcore if you didn't tell me the bike was new I would say they cassette is worn out and you put a new chain on. But it doesn't seem like that's the case. My guess is that rear derailleur just needs to be better adjusted.
Clint Gibbs I followed the video twice, the second time was a charm. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR VIDEOS! Been watching your content for years, very clear and quality content.
Shimani xt drillear When i return a gear a big noise geting what is reasons sir ?
Check the b-screw adjustment
@@ClintGibbs thank you show much
No mention of B screw adjustment.
Also because of your last tip, I will buy a new derailleur hanger
What would be the problem and possible fix if the shifting is off by one? That is when you shift the shifter in the 1st rear gear(#1), the chain would stay on the 2nd cog(not the 1st/biggest cog); if shift into 2nd rear gear(#2), the chain would go on the 3rd cog(not the 2nd cog); and so on.
First thought is simply the cable is too loose. Back out the barrel adjuster.
But what does the third screw do?
That's the b screw. That determines how far away the upper jockey wheel is from the cassette. Turn the clockwise if the jockey wheel is too close and making noises. if you have SRAM eagle there's a little plastic gauge you need to get the b screw perfect.
Try to understand how rd work, then its very easy to adjust
I bought a rear derailleur just like your's but its utter crap I watched every video even took it to a bike shop and neither they can fix it.
Mine skips gears struggle to climb
When I shift down to 5 gears the shifter doesnt make the click noise anymore. 6,7,8,9 and 10 is the gears that skip and doesn't make a clicking noise oh and when I shift up it has a thousand clicks before it starts shifting up.
Sometimes when your derailleur hanger is bent it'll shift well at one end of the cassette but poorly at the other end. Hopefully your bike shop checked your derailleur hanger but if not it's worth checking.
can you just say smaller cog or bigger cog.
It would be nice if the rear tire wasn't in the way
And if I could see what he's doing
Buddy your commentary was awesome but there was a couple spots I couldn't see what you were doing...I have a problem that you covered but the rear wheel was in the way so I missed it!
Welcome to my early days of CZcams. I made another one a few years later. Here it is:
czcams.com/video/sqFk69_Gkg4/video.html
all great, but please just say "shift down" when you're going to a larger gear.
When he says " the biggest gear," what he actually means is the smallest cog, the little one. He's messing people up. Come on, man, get your act together.
My act is together. I made a more current video for this:
czcams.com/video/sqFk69_Gkg4/video.html
At :50 I explain that exact terminology.
