🇬🇧 BETANZOS is a historic capital located a few kilometers from A Coruña, it is one of the seven capitals that formed the old Kingdom of Galicia, known as the City of Knights. Its fishing and commercial port attracted many bourgeois families who built large manor houses, palaces and churches. Its old town was declared a historic-artistic site in 1970.
It was formerly located at the inner part of the ancient wall that surrounded the city and had five doors. The main one, Porta da Vila, was decorated with three emblems which today are encased in the side of a house. Despite not being preserved, its name is used as the entrance of the historic centre. Nowadays, three doors remain standing: Puerta del Puente Nuevo, Puerta del Puente Viejo and Puerta del Cristo.
Betanzos has two national monuments: the gothic churches of Santa María del Azogue and San Francisco, located in the square of Fernán Pérez de Andrade, “O Boo”.
San Francisco has a Latin cross floor and inside you can find the tombs of the medieval knights that are the most interesting historical-artistic element of the temple’s interior, especially the sarcophagus of Fernán Pérez de Andrade, located at the back of the temple, under the choir, and supported by a bear and a boar.
Santa María de Azogue was built between the second half of the XIV century and the first half of the XV. It has a basilica layout and three naves. The main altarpiece and the capital with the only farming calendar of Galicia stand out.

Ven y descubre Galicia. Te encantará.
Hola! I was thinking you would probably have a new video this weekend, so I kept an eye out for it. Beautiful, quiet and charming little town - and three churches! And we got to go inside one of them. 👍
Nice walk along the river. The water seems a bit low - does the northwestern part of Spain have a 'dry season' or maybe that's the normal water level. Anyway, I was wondering if those boats with the canopy tops were ferries along the river, or maybe some type of fishing boats.
That structure at 6:56 is beautiful. I was looking at the lights and thinking it must look great at night, and then up closer - the wooden ceiling. Very nice. And the lamposts (or lamp posts, or lampposts 😄not quite sure of the spelling) at 7:55 are really ornate and beautiful. I was actually noticing some lamposts in a local park this afternoon that are modern, but in that old style, but much less ornate - but anyway, I was impressed by how much nicer they are than the cheap, modern ones. I love that style. Really beautiful - works of art, and very functional. 😁
At the Casa Nunez, those arches really framed the shot beautifully. And then at the St. James Church - the bells! You can't get better timing that that. 😄 Those church bells rang at just the right moment! The doorway to the church is beautiful - what a work of art that is. I didn't expect to go inside, but wow - the inside is amazing! Loved the walk around the inside of the church. The columns inside are really impressive, in fact, the columns inside reminded me of St. Patrick's Cathedral in NYC - (of course, St. Pats is much bigger and newer). Anyway, the altar was beautiful, and the area off to the right with the gate in front of it - wow. I can't remember if that area of a church has a specific name or not - but anyway, it's amazing to think that a local church like that has such beautiful artwork in it. Wow. The votive candles in front of the - I forget what it's called, but they have lots of them at St. Pat's Cathedral dedicated to lots of saints - nice. Oh, and the sunlight from the small window high above hitting the column down below - loved that. Really enjoyed the walk inside.
And then, another church! I noticed that the doorway looked very similar to St. James. I wonder if they were both built around the same time? You could really see the age in the stonework of the building. And the bells atop the church. 👍 And then - yet another church! San Francisco (i mean the church, not the city 😉) At the beginning of the video, I think there was even another church near that plaza that was white, or was that some other type of building? Anyway, toward the end of the video, I was thinking that this town was a photographer's dream - if you like to photograph architecture and art, but then, that's true of so many places in Spain.
Enjoyed the video. This is a holiday weekend in the USA, Memorial Day is tomorrow (monday). It marks the official beginning of the summer season, and today it was about 85F, so it finally felt like summer here, (but tomorrow is back to the 60's ;) Take care.
Hola! Como estas? You have a great intuition 😄 last week I made a trip to Galicia, in the northwest of Spain. It is a region that I barely knew since I had only been once before, so I really wanted to visit it again. Although I didn't stay for many days, I was able to visit some interesting places like this small town. I'm glad you liked it.
These next few weeks I will upload all tours that I have filmed there and that I hope you like too.
Betanzos is located at the mouth of two rivers, the one seen on the tour is called the Mandeo River. For this reason the level of the river depends on the tides. At the time that I filmed that part of the tour, it would be around 3 in the afternoon (according to the bell tower clock 😄), so the tide level was not completely high (when I got to the town in the morning the level of the tide was so low that most of those boats were still stranded) I'm not sure but surely the boats you mention are dedicated to fishing.
Regarding the structure of the plaza that you mention, in Spanish it is called "templete". It is very common in parks and squares in Spanish towns and cities. They are used to give recitals but I have rarely seen them used for that, they are usually empty or, as in this case, with young people who use it to hang out. This templete also caught my attention for its beauty, like the lampposts. I agree with you, this type of classic lampposts are much more elegant than the modern ones, which look like they came from a highway.
As you say I was lucky with the bells (although it seems incredible it was not planned 😄). When I get to the church it is closed so since I had no intention of doing the tour without showing the inside of the church, I filmed it at another time when it was empty and not bothering anyone. I really like the feeling of calm inside, with hardly any light (although that is a hindrance when filming). My attention was also struck when entering for the first time how tall the church is in relation to its small size, I think that is why the columns stand out so much. The area with the altarpiece to which you refer is called "capilla" in Spanish (chapel), this name is used in Spain both for small rooms to pray inside a church and for small independent buildings, perhaps in English this area has another different name.
Yeah, both gates are very similar. You are also right about date because I have searched for info about them and both were built around the 15th century commissioned by the same family (the most influential family there at that time) Great observation!! 😉👍
As a curiosity, in the sculptures of the gate of the Santiago church appears represented Santiago the Apostle mounted on horseback with a sword (he is the patron saint of Spain), he is represented that way here because according to tradition during a of the battles of the Reconquista between Christians and Muslims, Santiago appeared mounted on a horse and helped the Christians in victory.
Yes, there was another church in the square, it belongs to a convent. I'm sorry I didn't film it more closely because my camera's batteries were low and I was afraid I wouldn't be able to film the entire tour.
I agree with you, fortunately for the future of my channel 😄 we have many small towns with a lot of history to spend the day while enjoying their architecture and atmosphere, although I'm sure that in the US you also have many towns like that.
I'm glad you're enjoying a nice weather there. I hope you had a good time during your holiday week. Thanks as always for your visit. See you. Take care!
@@WalkingSpain Chapel, of course! We have a chapel to the right of the altar in my own parish church. I should have known. 😉
beautiful town!! good luck bro,+1 new sub!🙏

Galicia is NOT a town is a city since more than 800 years

Saludos!
