  • This video documents how I restring my Black & Decker GH1000 string trimmer line. I also gave a short review of my 13 years of use. Finally, I included two recalls that were made on this unit.

    Thank you for reminding of the arrows! I was trying to wrap and was trying to figure out why it wasn’t working until I saw that I forgot the direction.

    I love my black n decker - wanted to see if there was some trick to feeding those dual lines into the two holes - THAT is what I struggle with. Looks like I'm doing everything right, except I DO wind the spool tightly, and have problems while working the grass trimmer - so I did learn something from this video, after all - Thanks!!

      Thanks for the feedback. What I do is to make it snuggly tight so that there is no slack but not over-tightening it to a point string can’t be auto released.

    Thank you I was going to throw this away as the string kept coming off but I was not doing this right.

      Glad it helped. Wrap the string slightly tight so it leaves no gap as you wrap, but not overly tight to a point it'll jam. With inflation everything is soaring in price, so try to get more life out of good trimmer.

    How much string should I use? I read somewhere that it should be 30 ft for each side but that seems kind of excessive.

    Where can I buy the cap for the spool. I can't find it

  • @user-vr3ns4is9i

    I didn’t see that you used a spring with the cap. Is the bumper spring optional? I cannot put in the spool then cap it with spring and cap b

    • @DIYLifeSkills
      @DIYLifeSkills  Před rokem

      I always wondered about that too. I bought the the first one near new and second one after much use. Both are pretty old but still working well and I can’t recall seeing spring on the cap though I when I look up replacement it has the spring. So it could be that previous owners lost spring, or spring was added later as a additional safety to tightly lock the cap in place since they had problem of cap flying off. These cap & spring combo is cheap so I can always buy them but I’m thinking I don’t have much life left in these but they continued to work just fine.

    What do you do if the line doesn't auto feed? I have an issue that it cuts off and doesn't feed. This is even when I buy a pre wrapped spool

    • @DIYLifeSkills
      @DIYLifeSkills  Před 3 měsíci

      If you remove the spool, and look at the area where spool goes in (and not the spool itself), you should see about 1.5 inch long black plastic lever that moves slightly back and forth. That is what is controlling when to release the string (hence auto feed). When someone is not careful when removing the spool, that could actually fall off.

    I have the grasshog xp I need the gh1000 trimmer cap because my old one got wore out and broke. I ordered a replacement but that one just slips off. So I'm looking for a trimmer cap so I can weed wack

      Try to return it with wrong fitment and get a different one to try. It’s kind of dangerous if the cap flies off as this is very power. I always wear long jeans and shoes when I use this.

    How does the sting unwind automatically? Every time it gets too short I have to take it apart and pull more out

    • @DIYLifeSkills
      @DIYLifeSkills  Před rokem

      First, does your’s have auto string feeder feature? When you remove the spool, there is a lever that that locks and unlocks into gear like tooth. When it unlocks, it releases little bit of string. It’s all mechanical. Here are couple of videos, though the lever shape may be different, the concept is same.

      You mean you can’t get the spool with strings pulled out?

    • @DIYLifeSkills
      @DIYLifeSkills  Před rokem

      Once you get the orange cover off, stick a flat screwdriver into the side hole where the cover came off from, and then carefully pry it up. You may have to lift up in spool from two side hole slowly but firmly. It’s just stuck a bit but you can pry it up. In the worst case, if you break the spool, they sell the spool pretty cheap on Amazon

    Its such a pain to rewind that string and keep it from over lapping that I threw the Damn thing in my Fire Pit and torched the Hell out of it.

    • @DIYLifeSkills
      @DIYLifeSkills  Před rokem

      Yup, I know what you mean. If you rewind too tight and strings overlapped, sometime, the string doesn't release automatically. Also, opposite is also true, if the string is would too loosely, they get all jammed up. So in the beginning, it took some practice to apply the right amount of tension so that string auto-releases without binding.
