    Siskel calling “Little Mermaid” underrated is crazy. It’s always been regarded as one of the most significant Disney animated movies ever.

      im old . the little mermaid was a huge superstar of a movie since the get go. everything after was made to try to replicate the quality and the success of little mermaid (235 million world wide) . it was the bench line.... the standard... idk what siskel is talkingn about..

      I think he was referring to some critics (even if they were in a minority) who compared the Little Mermaid unfavorably with Disney classics from the past and I guess those criticisms stuck out to him. Don't forget that in the 90s they didn't look at movies like The Little Mermaid as "classics" yet, but instead as recent movies who would get compared to older ones that were the classic benchmark of the time.

    19:27 - that isn't a pointed criticism from Gene. In 1997, his daughters were already 14 and 11 years old. Hardly the ideal age for "Hercules", and if the Siskels were still restricting their kids' viewing habits to animated fare at those ages that would certainly be overprotective parenting.

    • @futuremovieactor
      @futuremovieactor Před rokem

      I'm guessing that any movie his kids wanted to see with him, they'd go see with him.

    I’ll give Gene that one for Hercules not being in high Disney standards. I’m not a fan of the Art direction, it reminds me of those magazines distributed to Sunday schools, or shows such as Between the Lions or Bill and Ted. I think that the story is compelling in some respects. Less than half way through the film, Hercules becomes the grown man we see in the advertising.
    Gene apparently thought Hercules himself was interesting.

      Mark Uyeda Batman Begins doesn’t hold a batarang to Batman & Robin... Lets analyze it - Batman & Robin has more villains at 3, more superheroes at 3, more Bat vehicles and gadgets gracing the screen, and a waay better cast. Siskel already saw the pinnacle of the franchise when he was alive.

    Why do they have to always spoil the movie? They basically gave away the ending to my best friend's wedding. The worst was when they said they liked the twist at the end of 6th sense, that was before people knew about M nights iconic twists. If you know there's a twist youre more likely to pick up on it before the end and spoil it. Oh well lol

      They've always been a little tone-deaf. And their taste veers a bit _cornball._ (As Gene might say.) They never notice remarkable instrumental scores, such as Danny Elfman's early work. In 1985, they both picked _Let's Hear It for the Boy_ as best song, when there were arguably more memorable contenders on the list. And most famously, in 1967, Ebert's review of _The Graduate_ called the Simon & Garfunkle songs on the soundtrack _instantly forgettable!_

  • @oobrocks

    And now, at last, it can be told: The sad decline of the _Batman_ films: In 1989, Tim Burton scores a major hit, with his visually striking film, full of realistic characters with interesting dialogue and plenty of humour.
    Because of all the money it makes, Hollywood says to him: _You just do you._ And _Batman Returns_ becomes the _Edward Scissorhands_ vision of Batman: A disturbing world full of oppressive normals and maladjusted freaks. It didn't fit the fun image MacDonalds wanted for its Happy Meal toys, and so Burton was off the case.
    Schumacher then delivered 2 films that MacDonalds could be proud of: He cadged Burton's designs and made what were essentially 2 action-figure commercials. Full of melodrama, pop psychology, moustache-twirling mugging, and knowing winks to the camera. Signifying nothing.
    In response to that, we got 3 to 7 utterly humourless and ultraviolent retellings that have pleased many. I'm not sure how MacDonalds feels about them, but it's clear that the most influential director of the past 40 years was Martin Scorcese. Not my cup of tea, but I guess it sells them action figures.
