The boys were all over the map in this episode, especially poor Gene. I think he often suffered from his own expectations. I can't count the number of times he gave a thumbs down to a film that was obviously good but could have or should have been great. In other words, he punished films because they didn't live up to their potential (in his mind). I think most people would be pretty upset if they asked a friend, "Should I see Dirty Rotten Scoundrels?" and were told 'no'. It's not a great film but it's certainly worth watching!

Ruprecht was there to put them off the marriage and it worked each time . Martin though got sick of it as Caine was too mean to pay him and just pretended it’s an education in con artistry

All of these movies are classics. Obviously My Stepmother is An Alien isn't a great classic. But Twins and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels... and even Tequila Sunrise are consistently brilliant.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels isn't trying to be The Sting. It's still just as clever and smart. But Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a great comedy. The Sting was not a comedy.
Tequila Sunrise is a very underrated romantic thriller. Mel Gibson, Michelle Pfeifer and Kurt Russell are all brilliant. But it's too confusing for Ebert?? You have to actually pay attention.
And how can you not love Twins? Did Siskel actually call Arnold a talented performer??

Steve Martin was WAY too old to play that part. When the film was first shopped around Hollywood, the original pair was Marlon Brando and Tom Cruise. I don't know about Brando replacing Caine but Cruise would have been a much better choice than Martin.
