There is a certain amount of beauty to them as they stand as a silent sentinel to a horrific time in history. So much peace and serenity surround a once horrific war.
Fuck me. I've been living in Hamburg for 5 years and in the vicinity my entire life but I never knew there were two of these cool things still left here. Gotta check out the Wilhelmsburg one, for sure!
the Hamburg, Willhelmbbuerg tower is now a power station, it's free to walk around it all, and is brilliant plus has a great little cafe up the top. I found it a brilliant visit.
Not just "still standing", but still incredibly resilient. The Austrians decided to destroy one a few years ago, and it took 3 demolition attempts and 8 months of demolition preparation in order to destroy one.
The fact that some of them still stand is amazing itself. I could love to buy one and rebuilt it into the WWII period as a museum piece. I supposed that arming the towers and displaying the Nazi Symbols could be a problem now, right?. Renovating the building could be OK, I guess.
I recently found a dog tag belonging to the 2.Schw.Res. Flak Abt. 123. Formed 26.8.39 in Berlin-Lankwitz from parts of I./Flak-Regiment 12, with 1. - 5. Batterien (1. - 3. schwere and 4. - 5. leichte). Until 7.41 known as Reserve-Flak-Abteilung 123, until 7.42 as Reserve-Turmflak-Abteilung 123, and until 9.43 as Turmflak-Abteilung 123. In 2.40 1./Res.123 became 3./604, and was reformed. In 1.41 redesignated II./Flak-Regiment 12.
they tried to blow them up after the war but it was to difficult Made in Germany they did manage to destroy one of the towers but it took about three attempts and many tons of explosives I think
Fuzzy Tabby Near my place, it recently took 3 years to build a road about 5kms long in the same time it took Bali to build an amazingly new and vast international airport. 🤷🏻♂️
Seen Flak Tower in Berlin, wish to explore inside, because only one you can see some historical stuff. So many building gone,as Germans try forget about their History, whilst I think they should keep them to remember and never do again!!! I love History of WWII and wish to explore Berlin Underground and many other places.
"So many buildings gone, as Germans try to forget about their History?" You obviously never experienced the neverending WWII-documentaries on german prime time television!!! Such like (I overstate the following a little): "What did Hitlers garderer usually shagged between christmas and new years eve?" or "Hitlers helper - the common house cat, myth or fascist reality?" I don't want to be rude, but there is no way any of us can forget those "delightfull" years between 1933 and 1945.
Being a historian I can only state: there was very much "awesome" german history before 1933 (or 1914/1871) if one would bother to research a little. I am aware (there is no need to be proud of ones place of birth or a nation) of some plusses my country gave the world, but I am also aware, that constant medial hammering of superflous facts on the Nazis, WWII and Hitlers left bottom-cheek won't prevent any further interest in active genocide.war-mongering or acts of utter bestiality. You may not understand my point, but imagine any issue of your (countries) past, plastered in a increasingly hilarious manner, day by day on half of Your tv-channels for decades. It would just dull you into one big cloud of actual desinterest.
You seem to misread a lot. It appears to me, that it would be better to use my own language here or stop the communication on the other hand. The germans were not the only which did horrible things, there are always more than one explanations to historic events. Nevertheless, I obviously would have to improve my english first for that kind of communication I estimate to be fullfilling. Maybe You go through my last post again and have a look for those statements, which weren't connected to the facts of the past, but to the contemporary media. And at least - ein kleiner Tip für Lernbegierige - give yourself the chance to learn about words and reading them. Carpe diem.
Come to Chicago and view a contemporary version of Flack Tower architecture under construction: the new Mariano's mega structure, corner of Wellington & Broadway. Both the Nazi constructions and the current hideous over-sized building in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood stand on common ground: total absence of sensible urban zoning regulation.
Removed after the war...or buried by millions of tonnes of debris created by the bombing. Now forming artificial hills. Even the Berlin Flakturm shows some heaping.
Where is that one in Berlin? Did they blow up the one by the Zoo? Go to the Anhalter Banhof shelter in Berlin if you get a chance. Quite impressive and spooky if you know the history of it. I could imagine people huddled up on the staircases as I walked by. Great video!
I wonder how effective these AA Towers were. Did they make a lot of kills/hits as AA,and how much did they do as Arty, because I read in Berlin they also used the Cannons as Arty. Did Allied Bombers ever got them as a Target? And what was the outcome if so...
in the battle of Berlin those Towers were litterally unconquerable. The soviets shot there biggest guns at them but with no effect at all. during the Battle those towers were the safest places (except Hitlers Bunker). There were perfect for observation and military command. the one in the Tiergarten was a real pain for the soviet forces do to beeing able to shot at everything moving on the ground while beeing safe. If I remember right the towers only surrendered after the offical surrender of Berlin. Before that the soviet just surrounded them like a siege. As AA guns they were really effictive to to beeing right in the middle of Berlin itself. most AA guns were in a circle around the outscourts of Berlin, depending on the flight pass the allied bombers would use to deliver effective AA fire, but the flak Towers could fire in every given situation with full flexibility do to no buildings or hills in the way and basically beeing in the middle of the bombing target. even though the once in Berlin were intendet to defend Hitlers gouvernement quarters there main point was to keep civilians save. Intended a fighting machines they were contrary the best things to save human lives in berlin.
ooh and now i feel the medal of honor airborne missions get me.. jump the flak tower they said.. will be fun they said.. death a million times i got! (i know the MoHA is fiction, but it does make me think of it)
The opening script beginning at 0:04 says, "One the night of 25 August 1940, ...", but it should be "On the night of 25 August 1940." Fire the proofreader!

the last picture is so beautiful. I hope they keep all the remaining towers.
I'd love to visit one of these towers. Amazing constructions.
I visited the one in Berlin back in 2016 and besides all the graffiti it was awesome.
These need to be preserved, no matter what their place in history, like the English Castles.

I like history
interesting video thank you for sharing
It's amazing what Germany accomplished in a few years compared to how long it takes modern governments to get anything done.
Fuzzy Tabby Near my place, it recently took 3 years to build a road about 5kms long in the same time it took Bali to build an amazingly new and vast international airport. 🤷🏻♂️
They did use slave labor to build them though.
Nice pics man...

Breath taking what Germany did in the wars,
Yea, awesome engineering.
Its called "Augarten"
Architecture of Totalitarianism
Architecture of functionalism.
Functionalism is archetypal for Germans, as Nazi Germany is archetypal for totalitarianism.
Whoa.
And today, what is so different? Think about it!
Not right!
Berlin and Haburg hat Flaks, and a little ones at the end!
@CG11767 Play Medal of Honor: Airborne, and you will see just that! ;)
Germany is the best civilization of the world. La cuna de europa y su unico defensor, la humanidad le debe una disculpa a ese pais.

Save the towers please.
A Alemanha é a maior🇩🇪✋
11 Million Bodies can´t be all hidden or disappear. Doesn´t that make you think?
2:15, Well look at that. You can see the Nazis in ruins from here... it's beautiful.
Yea, the buildings are great.
