  • 2016 Walkthrough of WW2 Anti Aircraft Flak Tower Air Raid Bunker in Hamburg, Germany. Flakturm IV. Tower now used as a commercial/Retail building. Roof access at end.

    The word impregnable is fully justified. These will definitely last for a thousand years. What a brilliant place to live. Imagine having a flak emplacement as a patio! I am so jealous!

    Ich habe ende der der 1980er Jahre dort eine Ausbildung zum Fotografen gemacht. Eines Tages kam ein alter Herr ins Studio mit einem Karton voller Fotos und fragte ob wir Duplikate machen können, da er keine Negative mehr hat. Auf den Bildern war er als 15 Jähriger Flakhelfer zu sehen der sich verbotenerweise dort fotografisch betätigte. Es waren Fotos vom ihm und seinem Mitschülern auf dem Dach und den Geschützen sowie das teilweise zerstörte Stadtviertel rundherum zu sehen. Er meinte er hätte zu der Zeit erschossen werden können wegen der verbotenen Fotos. Das war ihm nur damals nicht bewusst gewesen. Er hatte während seiner Dienstzeit zum Glück nur einen Angriff dort oben aushalten müssen. Es waren bewegende Geschichten…

    There's a lot of potential in these structures. Imagine building an outdoor bar or a cafe at the top? Maybe add a pool... The building can certainly take the weight, since it probably has tons of poured concrete and steel rebar inside. They could become a nice Hotel if properly rebuilt inside.

    It's a pretty impressive tower, I saw it when I was at this Carnival being hosted next too it in 2019. I recognized it straight away when I asked my friends who are locals there if that was what I thought it was. It definitely stands out in comparison to the other buildings that surround it.

    The most impressive for me is, to think about the fact, that Hitler himself walked the stairs in this Bunker. It's all original and a time witness.
    It really fascinates me.

      Yes, Hamburg! One of my favourite cities. I wish I had filmed more of the inner rooms. Incredible historical structure in an incredible city.

      Yes, that's interesting what kind of effort you put in during the World War. Never again such a war! When the corona pandemic is over, Hamburg will definitely invite you to many sights, such as the miniature wonderland, which I would also like to go back to, because it is constantly being expanded to include many countries in the world. Have a nice 3rd Advent!

      of course all a massive waste of material, money, manpower, the Allies simply flew around these flak towers, and the Alantic Wall , took 5 years to build and 5 hours for the Allies to get through.
      The Germans where great at building super large but useless structures

      @@davidrenton Not to mention that most of these large structures were built using slave labour. But demolishing them would be too costly. As they are, they're eyesores in the otherwise beautiful landscape of Hamburg. You could retrofit them and make tyhem into hotels or housing... Maybe.

    These things always remind me of the great Crusader castles in Jordan and Syria like Kerak and Crac du Chevalier. They too were built in war and are still there.
    Ive always wondered why U.S. citizens in Tornado Alley dont build in concrete!

      Yes. Building tenants include a night club, music instrument retail store and office space from what I can remember.

    Das ist der Flakturm Berta..Heiligendamm Hamburg.In kasematten war die Flak,insgesamt 4 davon 12,8 cm,,im oberere bereich..Darunter einige 8,8cm flag.Heute ist der Flakturm ein relikt.

    I have been to hamburg 2011 to 2014. I'm a marine engr on container ship. If i knew that hamburg have flak tower and it's near, i surely haved visited it. I thought flak towers are only located in Berlin.

      The windows have always been there. They originally had steel shutters over them.

      @@easygroove I know it seems odd to have windows but they did have thick steel doors that closed over them. Some would have been emergency exits as well.
      15000+ people would fill the lower levels so I guess ventilation would be an issue without them.
      You can see all the windows in wartime photos.

      I did get permission for roof access from building management as I was working in the building for the day. I was told the very top level is not accessible to general public due to safety codes and liabilities etc. Top level is fenced off and locked.

      The bottom floors were for civilians. Then came a hospital floor - then several floor for the air defence brigades.

    Super super cool. But I wonder why they have left graffiti throughout. Next to pictures on the wall and also that door going out to the roof with lawn chairs and greenery seems strange

      Seems the tenants of the building are not advertising the buildings history but are using the space for (nothing to see here) commercial use like office space, night club, music store etc. That time in history is something to cover up unfortunately. Let history live I say! 👍🏻

      Zum Besichtigen eignet sich der Flakturm in Wilhelmsburg (Stadtteil von Hamburg) besser. Der wurde zum Energiebunker umgebaut und vor der Corona-Zeit konnte man Besichtigungen unter den Aspekten "Historie" oder "Energiebunker" buchen.

    These Flak towers should be kept not just because they are history. They could be repurposed as nightclubs or reform schools as they are so forbidding.

      This particular one already is. In general Hamburg is repurposing a lot of the bunkers for civilian use (housing, infrastructure, commerce, etc)

    I remember exploring that with my cousin back in the early '50's. Does anyone know who actually owns it? Hamburg is a beautiful city, I feel very privileged to have been born there and spent a large part of my childhood there.

      @@mffilms3854 no, they'd been taken and scrapped by the British Army. My dad, a British soldier remembered them being scrapped. The hamburg i knew still suffered badly from the bombings and the "fire storm" with many signs of battle. The building my Oma and Opa lived in still had shell and bullet marks.

    No need for structural insurance here, cant think of anything short of a nuclear bomb literally landing on it could damage it.I think, I could be wrong it would be still intact at a half mile radius of one.Some future civilizations archeological enigma. Alternately they could be filled with our known history completely sealed up as a time capsule for a future civilization but properly sealed up, not like the half ass job the Egyptians made of the pyramids.

      I guess the people spraying there have no respect for the history they destroy. Our grandfathers fought in that war and they dont even have enough respect to leave these towers as a memory on what horrible things happened through the reign of the Nazis. Thats like spraying in a graveyard. People have literally been killed from there I and every other Germany should keep this and the fact that it coukd happen again at every time in mind

      @@JohnBrown-cn8xg Most people in Hamburg don't see the Flakturm shown in the video as a war memorial or something like that. It's used for shops, clubs, training rooms for bands and other stuff. And at the moment the are building some kind of "green pyramid" on the rooftop. Maybe this explains a bit the grafiti on the walls.
