I miss seeing these conversions on the roads as they used to be so common place back in the 90's here in Boston. Thanks for making this Jon
London is full of them nowadays, they are everywhere.. It's in people's interest here to have a cheap functional and low maintenance bike, and this style delivers :)
watching you struggle with that bottom bracket was great, i spent half my life (and a fair amount of blood, and a 6-foot cheater bar) doing exactly that when i worked in a commuter-oriented shop
Heeeeeelp. I bought a bike to do this and ended up falling in love then bought another because I couldn't part out the first and then fell in love with that one and so on and now I have a metric fuck ton of bikes
I have the same problem ...
You must have a kindergarten of bikes by now. Oh God.
It made me glad that you mentioned pedal threads, it's something that is rarely metioned, but I almost came a cropper on a single-speed conversion I did when my pedal came loose.
I've been eyeing my dad's old 1980's Peugeot and transferring it to a fixie bike for the last two years. This might give me the push to show him what I want to do to his neglected bike.
When you spend more money on tools than on parts...
Tools will last longer than a rider's life.
I’m building one soon and I’m looking into buying a tool kit for under 35$
@@ElektronKouture02 buying a kit is a good way to start. If I did that I would have saved some money.
I built my own fixie out of an 80's french road bike frame. I got the frame kit, front wheel, bar, stem for 15€ at my local bike association. Rear wheel is new and cost me 80€. Then i put my already used crankset with a new chain, and a new 17 teeths sprocket (chain and sprocket for 20€). New michelin tyres for 20€, bar tape, and front brake for 30€. I know i can go much cheaper, but i was looking for a keirin style fixie, and i'm only proud of the result ! Love my bike
Perfect timing! I am planning to do this to the Peugeot Premiere I had when I was a teenager!
Fantastic! I have built a few single speed bikes from old bikes including a singlespeed mountain bike for the winter mud. I love them.
I'm currently doing my first restoration/customisation on an 80's claud butler. Loving these resto videos they're really helping me! Keep up the good work!
Loving the new series Jon. So relateable for many subscribers.
Nice to see the full strip and clean treatment! Being from Brazil, my first fixie build was obviously a Caloi 10. We always ran away from peugeots because of the italian thread bottom bracket. I'm looking forward to see what will come up of this. Nice work!
Just like to say cheers to Jon and the GCN tech team, the channel has quickly become my favourite. Due to laziness, work and bad weather I haven't really ridden much this year. In place of that i've stripped my entire bike gave it a good clean and put it back, without these videos and their invaluable information this task wouldn't have been as fun/stress free!!!
Wohoo, this is awesome to hear Andrew! Hope the weather improves so you can enjoy the fruits of your labour!
i recently converted my old Puch 10 speed and watched your video. GNC bought a new handle bar. One thing I did cheaper was to take the old drop-down bars, pull them out and reverse them, cut approx. 8" off the ends, put them back in in the cow-horn configuration with bar end up. Rotating them to a comfortable 'up' position makes it easy on the rider. For their video, I wanted to see the chain tension adjustment. It was cut short on the video. When I built my bike the chain came off on the first test ride. its fixed now.
I used that bike to make a fixie as well, with Brooks leather saddle and grips, looks amazing.
Excellent! I adore rebuilds!
I am building a 7 speed i found abandoned and giving it to a friend from Cuba !
Awesome! A few years ago I bought an old Peugeot Etoile and also made a fixie out of it. Gave it a nice respray, new wheels (and everything else basically, kept the vintage white seat tho). I also ordered a legendary Peugeot decal from Australia and bought two name decals for the sides of the frame in the front. It's amazing. And wasn't that expensive at all, certainly a better experience than getting something new.
I did this exercise a few years back with a rare Swiss Tigra frame - the parts cost no more than 50 quid, then again having a close friend who owns a bike shop helped :D ... It's a joy to come across random parts that come together in a unique assembly - it's my favourite bike of all of them, and there are carbon frame racers in that bunch. That side of tinkering with bikes completely gets lost with buying an off the peg bike, which is something I've never done and can't see myself doing.. Looking forward to seeing the rest of this series!
I have Nishiki Linear TT converted into a fixie!! Nice video!
Been waiting for this series! Looks like my old falcon may find its final form yet 👌
When no one is looking, Jon, slip a rear mech onto it. And a paddle on the down tube. Sweetness.
Love those bike build/convert videos !
Glad to see this series ! I’m currently building up my own from a 1983 Motobecane Jubile Sport!
OOh nice, make sure you share it here: gcntech.co/FBUpgradesGroup
I know the pain of Peugeots with metric pedal threads. I discovered them on my PH40 when I went to change the pedals, decided to change the crank set to solve the issue, then found that the French and English cottered BB spindles are different diameters, so I had to get an English spindle to put between the french cups.
It's a sort of fixie, in that it is fixed gear under acceleration above 14 mph, but in low gear (any speed below 14mph) it's got a freewheel, and if you coast then it changes down. The Sram Automatix 2 speed really is a fascinating hub.
I see this a lot around my area and I love seeing vintage bikes back on the road and out of the landfill
This will be another great series. Thanks jon
From someone who has grown up with cycling from 1980’s to 2019, the tools to take those components apart from an early frame would cost considerably more than the bike you purchased if you don’t already have them. Just the flip side to retro . Just saying. 🤘🇨🇭
i feel you. A friend of mine has all the tools which "i don't buy for using only once.." so i asked him, if we could work together on my peugeot i recently bought. :)
You should watch Raphson's videos. He focuses on that take-apart time and shows some really funny ways to use any-ole tool to get the job done.
Yes! Very much getting into fixies and single speeds lately. I'm thinking of turning a old carbon tt bike into a fixie. Can you make a video on that please. I have a feeling it's also not as straightforward as I might imagine.
That frame and espresso machine combination🔥🔥🔥
Love the time lapse of Jon taking that bike apart!
Really loving these "turning this old thing into some other thing" videos. Keep it up, please!
All hail Sheldon Brown 😍
Show some love for RJ The Bike Guy, too!
The ultimate Bell end wanka
Man oh man this is going to be good! JC pulling yet another great series out the bag! I'd be interested in doing this build.
Play along with us Michael 😉
@@gcntech I didn't realise this was that type of website.
This is my second favorite series. The first is the painter bike lmao
Love these kind of videos
Dude I love these videos
Not a fixie fan but I can watch Jon in the workshop any day. :-)
Finally this topic on GCN!
Hyped for this. Got an old frame I'm my dad's garage that I already have wheels for. Will be good to see some hints and tips on this
Awesome!
Wanted a series like this for ages!
I like the principle of a cheap fixie, and learning how to make one on the way is a bonus too
If you run a two sided hub for winter touring an 'unsightly' chain tensioner is simple, very useful and easy to clean.
Haven't even watched it and this is great!
how often are you guys gonna be posting these? I'm just in the process of converting my bike to a fixie and this is by far the most promising video series for it I've ever seen! don't be weekly please! be daily or every other day, I need it!
Nice frame there John... I passed on just like this on the street yesterday and was thinking the same thing
I just bought a Peugeot Corbier from the 80's in great shape and had this same idea in mind. Looking forward to seeing what you put on that frame. Not looking forward to removing the bottom bracket...
The night before, put Triflo on the edges, and threads.
Don't be afraid to drip product thru the seatpost, or a chainstay vent.
And time, and again. Two half-hour soaks, and it comes apart.
Or struggle and sweat for the hour: it's more entertaining. 😁
Looks like Jon cleaned the frame this time!
Neutered bike build! *thumbs up*
this is just what i needed
Can wait for the next instalment, this is gonna be an excellent series.....nice one
Cheers Andrew!
Spot on, love these transform a bike films. I bought an old Peugeot frame to do the same thing. Still in garage next to the new Cinelli I got instead! I got stumped on bottom bracket replacement so I’m looking forward to the follow up films. Might be motivated to finish the job, but the Cinelli still staying 😀
Velo Orange had all your French thread parts and a great sealed bb! I used them for my PX-10 rebuild.
Ron Bell awesome, thank you, really helpful cheers
Next build video should be of a 3x rigid mountain bike to 1x gravel setup
Better yet, an old steel framed hybrid. I saw somebody turn one into a budget cross bike, but only because the term "gravel bike" hadn't been invented yet.
Beautiful ones.
Finally a fixie!
I think I shall win the cheap fixed gear competition. All prices in AUD
Found a frame and stem next to the tram stop bin - free
Paid a mate $20 for his bodge job bike that was meant to be a fixed gear but didn’t even have the same width cog and chainring. Used the crankset, bars and wheelset from this bike
Shimano spdsl 105 pedals - $20
New chain of fb marketplace - $10
Rear cog from second hand bike workshop - $5
Used some badminton handle tape I found in my cupboard for bar tape
Total cost - $55
I also bought a front brake and cable for $12.50
YES! More cheap bikes!!
I have two premieres - one is my partner’s resto mod with 2011 centaur and roberto Corsas from a bianchi. Cost less than £300 to build and it’s an awesome ride. The other is my l’eroica bike! “Carbolead” I call them but their geometry works for me :-)
Nice to see one getting worked on :-)
part 2? can't wait. I'm building fixie at the moment from the same bike
Woohoo, keep us updated here: gcntech.co/FBUpgradesGroup
Jon, nice spot you have there, GCN bar. That bargain frame is going to pop up in your hands. Keep it simple.
I did exactly this!! Sent in to 'Upgrades' on the uploader last week.....I'll take the credit for inspiring you! I'll send again.
Hehehe! Nice one David 👌
Did you thread the bottom bracket? I'm converting my wife's bike with a internal gear hub and I'm thinking about replacing crankset and the bottom bracket but I don't even know what are the options here.
Damn...wish I’d have bid £35.01, what a damn good buy. Can’t wait to see the end result
As legendary as the toe clip and strap - go Jon.
Much more practical than using a track frame, imo. You get geometry for the street and water bottle bosses, and good steel if you pick up a good frame.
watching this in May of 2020 in Fort Lauderdale, and those vintage Peugeot road bikes get $300 - $400 around here. good looking bikes and color schemes imo
If i could give this video two thumbs up I would. Love these bike build series.
Cheers mate!
Being American I'm pretty jealous of the used bike market in the UK. We have loads of cheap used electronics here that my relatives over there are jealous of, so I guess it's a trade off.
Now you've got me looking at a frame for a fixed wheel bicycle such as the Holdsworth Zephyr Frameset 531 with silver hard soldered investment cast lugs on Planet X.....I've just spent £300 on a new Felt ZC carbon frame set after an earlier eBay group set splurge (mostly Dura Ace and Ultegra components) inspired with the Cheap bike to Superbike series for under £1000.
Glad you used gloves Jon! No grubby little hands today.
Inspired. Just bought a Peugeot comp 4000 with full compag avanti for £35
Hello, very nice and helpful series! I do have an old french bicycle that I would like to transform into a fixie. I would like to change the wheels, however, I find it difficult to find new wheels with a fitting dimension. I would need wheels with installation width 95mm for front and 126mm for the rear wheel. Can you recommend me some wheels?
awesome!
do you know eny internet shop for single speed ,fixed bike which send greece bikes, cheap bike not more of 200 euro?
please make sure you add a long, negative rise stem for maximum lo-pro style points
😉
I would love to do this kind of video but from road to CX! With tips on how to increase tire clearance and so on...
have you got a wecricket sticker on the back of your computer? just spotted it and it looks very similar! great vid either way!!
Hey Jon, do you mind telling me what brand is your glasses? They look awesome!!
I got a China direct unbranded carbon aero frame... I dare you guys to review one. About 500 miles so far on my frame and it's been awesome.
I did a steel frame fixed gear conversion on an old Nishiki, I think it was an International. Anyway, I picked up the bike for $30 I believe. The goal was to build it for as little money as possible. I think I managed under $100 USD total including the initial purchase, though I went over budget when I put on some extra goodies like fenders. Point is, building a fixie can be fun and CHEAP
How do you add horizontal dropouts to that kind of frame (to adjust chain tension if switching cogs/chainring)? Or is there some "other way"?
alternatively you could use a chain tensioner or maybe an eccentric BB.
Hi,
I have watched your videos for a while now. I recently bought a vintage bike with the shifting gear on the frame. I was thinking if you can do a video or to give us some ideas of how to upgrade a bike with the best affordable bike parts. Myself I do not have 500 pounds or more to invest in a 60 pounds bike.
Super! I love the belt drives! #askgcntech
I have ridden a spot bike with a belt drive and they are very nice. It does have gears in the hub though which is nice, because you can change it at a stop sign.
@@FoolOfATuque I bet that was awesome to ride! I just looked it up! Very cool! 🚴🏻♂️
I can't wait
That's the thing that this show was missing! I ride my fixed gear bike (scorcher-like) every day for commuting for 7 years so far. It's built with an old three-speed frame, and TIG welded Shimano freehub. I wasn't satisfied with the thread on hub and sprocket, the threaded portion was off centre. However, it wasn't unscrewing because of the lockring from a british bottom bracket. I can totally see myself working in GCN and/or GMBN alongside John and the crew.
I used to have one of these peugeot bikes that had been modded with very thin wheels/tyres and bullbars. That thing flew but received far too many punctures than was required. Memories.
By gosh, you were quick. I have a ficxie. Now converted to a road runner .8 gears on the back. And not running true. Is it because they are not compatible?
Nice Pink Floyd in the background during the disassembly
When i last seen this video was my last ride, then now it’s 2024 it’s been 5 yrs since my last ride wish i could ride a bike again in future ❤
About 10 months ago I bought a Peugeot premiere and changed it into a fixed gear haha. All for around £100, including price of the bike
OOh, that's very good! Show us here! gcntech.co/FBUpgradesGroup
What tools should I buy to have the base set? I have nothing today and I want to build and learn :)
Anyone know the make of the wall mount the bike is hanging from?
There is no reason that this should be more than one video.
Monetized
Jon's hair extra fluffy that day!
Nice video. But can you guys please, please test 1-2 models from Decathlon. They got some nice bikes with good components and decent price. I am realy curious to know the opinion of a pro biker betwin decathlon bikes and something from Giant, Orbea, Canyon, Giant, etc. Thank you:)
Can you use a 34/52 combination on a non di2 Ultegra 11 speed, I currently have a 36 and would like to swap out for a 34
Thanks
Yes. As you increase the jump, the shift will become worse, but you'll be fine
Where is the link to part 2 ?? Cant find it anywhere...
Stamped rear dropouts and fixed gear don't mix too well, go for forged ones.
How did the frame and fork weigh?
got exactly the same peugeot, rescued from a storage room, full of shit. just washed it , changed some breaked and damage part, as wheels wires , seat and handlebar, and got and incredible confortable bike. even more than my xc lapierre.
Got the same bike for the same project...... Syncronisity!
Woaaaah...
@@gcntech I'll just copy John, will be reet!
