"The more you scare 'em, the more they like it!"
Love the way he says that.
And he was right! Joker scared the crap out of me...and yet, there was no villain I'd rather see!
He's right all the best villains were super scary
Its crazy how Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix all played The Joker in a different way but they were all AMAZING in the part.
And Jared Leto, obscenely underrated just because that movie didn't work.
Romero remains my favorite though: he looks like he just escaped from the madhouse in every single scene. And that laugh...!
@@evanjazzista I never saw Suicide Squad but I will check it out . I totally agree about Romero. He was THE Joker of my childhood.
I would love for Mel Gibson to get a chance to play the Joker
@@charlesshankle3178 That would be AMAZING.
@@shawndemetrios7899 yes it would be because he excels at playing madmen. The best guy to be the Batman if Gibson had been the Joker would have been Robert De Niro. His controlled, subtle acting style would have contrasted well with Gibson's joker.
That line 'lets brighten it up for the kids' was s p o o k y 🙀
His gaze drills through so fast I'm shaking!
Leo is also a Batman fan?? Awesome!!
Little bit of Jack Torrance sneaking in there.
Sounded like a line Joker would use right before electrocuting a kindergarten class on live TV after Channel 9 canceled his favorite show.
Roll well done sir!!!
Jack Nicholson nailed that role.
He did more than nail it he became it. He had to check into a psychiatric hospital as a result
And half the broads in Hollyweird
Caesar Romero will always be Joker.

By the way, you could’ve just edited your original comment since you misspelled Joker, you didn’t have to make a whole new comment... just saying
@Sean Austin who do you like better, Robert De Niro or Jack Nicholson?
Jack's description of Joker as "a hateful occurrence" is insanely spot-on, as is Jack himself.
Jack was the perfect joker for Tim Burton's vision
Indeed he was
Not just in this version, of all time. If anyone is a close second it’s Hammill.
Mark hammil rivals him... But if you had cast jack Nicholson in Nolan's films he would still have been the perfect jack Nicholson. And believe me I know the joker plays a good jack Nicholson
@@Sviolinist Problem with Nicholson is that he makes all the other actors fade due to his screen presence.
@@AnabolicFarmer - Keaton didn't fade though. He played it quiet, stoic, and moody to counteract the exuberant psychopath that Nicholson was and it was great

He’s refused to do TV talk shows for his entire career (only print interviews), so this footage of him talking to an interviewer is EXTREMELY special.
He is fantastic. He talks about this role in these short clips more intelligently, precisely and in depth than some/most actors do (about their roles) today.
Not Realy...because it is for a Movie-Selling-Product. That kind of work is in the contract....
Jack made north of $75 million dollars off of Batman 1989. I'm sure he is more than happy to talk about the greatest gold mine he ever found in his life.
@@SuperSnakePlissken what’s 75$ million in 1980’s money adjusted for inflation today?

Jack Nicholson is the best, funniest, and creepiest Joker! So Legendary!
Not even closer to Heath
@@hamzanazeer6412 jack & Heath both brought their own unique individual talents to this character.
@@hamzanazeer6412 Jack was both funny and scary, Heath was just mostly scary
@@hamzanazeer6412 Sorry to disagree, Heath "s portraying is great in the sense of the Joker is a mix between a thief and a psychopath....Nicholson's version is just pure craziness and psychopathy all tied together...his moment with Kim Basinger in the museum is just the epitome of what the Joker is, something childish but in a terrifying sense ( like the joker is in the comics, he can kill his men and then have a great laugh about it...)....something less interested in having a purpose ( which Heath's joker has = theft ) and more simply interested in his own " instincts" based on destruction alone. And then there's the laugh, sorry but Heath's version can't even dream to compete with the laugh of Nicholson ( when he read the newspaper and begins to say booo booooo and is amused by his own sounds.... )
They were both great in the role. One real difference nobody seems to touch on is we know jokers origin as jack Napier from Nicholson but we don't know what's heaths joker came from he just showed up one day

And now every thing is brighten UP for the Kids. Mad mad 2 had scene of rape and girl was shot with crossbow afterwards. Mad max fury Road looks like Cartoon for Kids in comparison
@@pioneernut7487 Dude, Max is connected by a blood transfusion line for half the movie. Women were tied up for milk for chrissakes. No, they didn't actually pictorially show a rape and murder, although they didn't in mad max 2 either. It was the last half killfest that was toned down.
Nothing makes me happier than knowing that Jack Nicholson loved being The Joker , as much as we loved watching him as The Joker.

Heath Ledger.
Jack just nailed this role! - I love how his Joker could be charming - still sees himself as a ladies man - he can be both goofy and playful with the gimmicks and pranks at one moment - but turn on you on a dime - become very violent with a sadistic sense of humour - I personally find that ‘unpredictability’ the most scary and unsettling!!
Heath was smart and scary - but never goofy - none of the pranks or gimmicks - you would never see him as anything but sinister and evil - anything but a threat
Phoenix’s Joker didn’t even understand the concept of how jokes or humour worked
I’ve always loved Jack’s version and to me it’s the most comic book accurate interpretation of the ‘Bronze Age’ Joker I read in the Batman comics I grew up with in the 70’s and 80’s
He’s my favourite silver screen Joker
The actor himself is a God - there will never be another Jack Nicholson!!!
I think that a lot of people now realize, thirty years later, that Nicholson’s Joker is the definitive Joker. Ledger and Phoenix did variations on that character…but they weren’t “the Joker”. As you pointed out, they were generally too dark without the humor necessary with that character. Nicholson IS the Joker because he’s one of the very few actors who could pull off such a tight rope act of a performance. It was cosmic timing and the greatest inspired casting for a film ever.
There's yet to be a live action version of the Joker that's truly loyal to the source material. Ledger emphasized Joker's creepiness too much and he wasn't a guy who fell into a vat of chemicals. He had no fun.
Nicholson was closer to it, but he was still a fifty-something, pudgy guy who had a couple of prank gadgets on him. He was more like an unhinged gangster. Leto is just the definition of "trying too hard". Phienix's Joker is is not bad - as long as you don't think of him as The Joker. It's more like Taxi Driver, but instead it has a clown.
The Joker should be funny, charming, flamboyant, but also an unpredictable murderer. Like Mark Hamill's voice work come to life.
Jack Nicholson is highly overrated.
Heath’s was goofy when was a nurse trying to blow up the building ……
You're right, poor Bob lol
Jack Nicholson is the best joker 100% hands down.
Even today jack’s portrayal of joker is still version I first think of when the joker is mentioned , as well as Keaton being Batman.
They should bring Nicholson back for the Flash movie. He always wanted to play the Joker again.
That would be epic but Jack is now 84 years old and overweight. Not only that, he's retired since he didn't want to make any movies anymore. Which I don't blame him, he had a very successful career. So, he deserves a break
@@thatoddone321 Um Keaton is also old so? THey can do a thing like Spiderman No Way Home, where he is alive for some reason.....An Old Joker with An Old Batman...like The Dark Knight Returns
@Eijent Wun Keaton is 71..Jack is 86 already
They nailed it with Jack as The Joker.. but we also gotta give props to Hugo Blick as the young Jack Napier.. he killed it aswell.. would have been cool to see bim as a younger Joker..
Every time I think of this film, Hugo's image and the line "Have you ever danced..." creeps in.
@@vapour_focus yeah that grin when he points his gun at young Bruce is just so scary.
Jack Nicholson has a great ability to be egotistical and humble all in one sentence. Clearly knows his talent and power but respectful of the projects he does and the others involved.
Has to be one of those occasions where it could not have had a better choice. There are occasionally films like that. That man as the Joker, is the greatest selection it could have been.
"a hateful occurrence" never has the joker been described more perfectly! Not a man or a person just a force.
The combined might of action, actors and soundtrack (Prince) was amazing. It was an absolute SPECTACLE of a movie for the time period. 😵
It really was...
Jack Nicholson, was laying the groundwork, for what the Joker character will be from this point forward. After the 1989 movie, people like Mark Hamill, Heath Ledger and recently Joaquin Phoenix pretty much took what was pretty much blueprint of Jacks version of the Joker and put their own spin of it. And now, the Joker is one of the most recognizable villains in comics and movies.
Jack is still my favorite joker of all time.
When they say he made a LOT of money playing the Joker, they are talking upwards of $60 million ... more than what Robert Downey Jr received for playing Tony Stark in the Avenger films. Crazy stuff
Adjusted for inflation?
"Though Nicholson was paid $6 million up front for his role as the villainous Joker in the 1989 "Batman" film, he reportedly secured a lucrative deal that included box-office earnings and merchandise sales from its sequels - that he didn't even appear in."
So he's probably even still making money from it now.
@@bigblueassbaby9074 screenrant.com/jack-nicholson-joker-batman-contract-90-million-how/tldr/6
That says he earned an estimated $90 million which is $194 million when adjusted for inflation
@@UnbelievableOdyssey Jack’s lawyer is a fucking genius.
@@bigblueassbaby9074 - The man himself is allegedly extremely shrewd when dealing with studios (and also remarkably supportive and kind to other actors, but that's an aside) - from his perspective he was taking a risk because in 1989 most people's awareness of Batman came from the '60s TV series, and this movie was essentially pushed hard as WB's blockbuster for that year - it was never going to flop, but it wasn't outside the realm of possibility that it could be edited into a campy mess (a la Schumacher), which could significantly harm Nicholson's career. By engineering that deal, Nicholson effectively told the studio two things; firstly that he was all-in and willing to stake his reputation on the movie; so they'd better hold up their end of the bargain and take it as seriously as he did - and secondly that he was going to secure himself a sizeable payday whatever happened, and every cent of that payday was coming out of their pockets, so if they wanted to make maximum bank, they'd better make him look as good as he made them look.
I loved Batman so much as a kid and i love what Tim Burton has done for Batman and Batman Returns 🙂. The Joker became my favorite Batman villain because of this movie and Batman TAS and Jack Nicholson nailed The Joker and he had an iconic laugh 🙂🃏
Even jack’s teeth were perfect for the Joker roll 🔥
I was six years old when this movie came out in 1989 and it was instantly by far the best movie I had ever seen at that time and I became a huge fan of Batman, and I absolutely loved Jack Nicholson's role in that movie, it left such an impression on me and set a standard for what the Joker should be. I did watch the Adam West series of Batman before the Tim Burton movie came out, but I absolutely loved what they did with the joker character with Jack Nicholson. Don't get me wrong, Heath Ledger did an outstanding and amazing job and I absolutely loved the colourful character of Joker he played, but Jack Nicholson's version has always had a huge place in my heart because it wasn't just that loved the movie, it was because when I was a kid when my family was still together and all of my family members were still alive. So maybe it is a Sentimental thing to me that I have a bias for that movie and the actors and actresses who played in it.
Yesssss, Jack will always be my fave Joker ❤️🃏
Nice! same. Great year.
My favorite Live action Joker and second favorite of all time next to Mark
It’s interesting….in recent years, Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix came along and redefined the Joker. I think that a lot of people forgot about the brilliance of Jack Nicholson and just now are beginning to rediscover him in the role. For me, he’s still the best overall depiction of the character.
Heath Ledger was a close 5th after Jack, Mark, Joaquin, and Cameron. At least he was better than awful Jared Leto
Mark will always be my fav ❤️
Jack Nicholson el mejor Guason clásico y con la visión tan única de Tim Burton es simplemente genial .
Jack made a fortune from this movie
Man I wish jacks joker would appear alongside keatons Batman in the flash movie
Jack made 60 million for this. He also said it's one of his favorite roles. At one point he watched it once a week for a year bc he loved watching it so much. I'm sure the 60 mill helped. Lol. He got a % of the back end & % of the joker merchandise. They wanted jack so badly they kinda pissed off robin William's. They went to robin asked him to do it & he said yes they went to jack & said " ok if u dont do it robin said yes & jack agreed. " robin was so angry he was just used as bait to get jack. So when WB asked him to play the riddler he refused. He said he would never do another WB film until he got an apology. It is a great blue print bc as they say they got marlon brando by offering him a % of the gross. Marlon to this day holds the record for most money made for least amt of shooting. I think they paid him 4 million in 1977 $ & 12 % of the gross which the film made over 250 million. So I think I read in my sons recent guiness book that he made like 30 million in 1978 for 7 to 10 days of work. Remember hes only in the beginning & what was cut bc in the 2nd film they tried to use his footage as it was intended but tried to screw him out if the back end of the 2nd films gross. Yes everyone signed on for 2 films as they shot them both at the same time & had to bc of time finish up the 1st & had 75% of the 2nd in the can. Anyway the point is it's a good formula when superman & batman were the first comic book films to get a brando & later a Nicholson bc it gives it instant clout. So they were worth their weight in gold. Without nicholson no way would people been as excited. I mean jack is the joker. Literally.
You know, I think Robin could have done a pretty decent Joker as well.
I'm not shocked Robin would be pissed cause Joker killed Robin

Every other Joker was either an interpretation of The Joker, but I have to believe that Jack Nicholson's Joker probably had at least some impact on the comic book character. It was that good imo.
From what I know about The Joker, he's highly intelligent, highly unpredictable, lives for chaos and has very little fear. Interpreting him as an actor has to be very difficult. When you struggle with it, you get Jared Leto's try hard performance.

Simply the best. Health Ledger was another point of view, marvellous too.
The fact that the Beetlejuice director was able to convince a veteran actor to play in a comicbook movie was a miracle in itself. What some people don't realize, when the argument comes up "who was the best joker?", is that Jack Nicholson was the one who transformed the Joker into the psychopathic, darker than the original version character that the Joker originally was. Yes, Heath was a great actor and Phoenix even took it further, but I guarantee a huge part of character study was focused on the original Jack Napier, making Nicholson the greatest to play the part.
I remember this being the first movie I saw in the theatres, I was 5 back in '89

I only was able to look at the first Batman movie was a book about the movie, with picturss of all the characters, I couldnt look at the pages with the Joker on it because he was too scary. Even at 39, rewatching scenes with him make me feel uneasy. I think he did a great job
He’s was epic as joker! He was and Michael Keaton were the first of its kind as far as a dark depiction of the Batman series.

This makes me realize just how strategic it was to have Nicholson play the Joker, aside from Nicholson merely being a good actor.
Oh yeah! It was to counter the Michael Keaton aspect of it too (From the time).
Heath ledger was really good as the joker, but he was a reinterpretation Jack Nicholson was the joker that leaped right out of the comics that's what made him so great. Back in 1989 they were trying to be somewhat faithful to the comic book thats why today you can go in so many different directions with these characters, but not all of them are good Jared Leto. 😭
