George Herbert Walker Bush was the last U.S. President that served in combat. There were a number of his predecessors who also paid their debt to the country, but George Bush’s experience was completely unique. He managed to evade the gruesome death of being eaten by Japanese soldiers during the Chichijima incident.

@@---uf2zl i read that book (it has no relation to the movie btw) and it went in great detail of the fates of about a dozen US pilots who were shot down and captured. None survived. Canibalism was rampant in the japanese army as they had been dehumanized into thinking of the enemy (namely chinese and americans) as being scum and degenerates who deserved torture. That, plus the japanese government not properly supplying its soldiers led to the army essentially seeking an alternative food source. Thus, canibalism.
PS the books a good read if you like learning how evil people can be.

On veteran's day this year, a World War II veteran came to my high school and spoke to myself and over 30 other students regarding his service (he was on the crew of the U.S.S. Finback, the very same submarine that rescued Bush). He told us about how a submarine works, and told us the story about how his submarine was the same one that saved Bush during the war. It was a very sobering experience to hear his story. He also told us about several of his experiences after the war, including being stationed in Panama and later visiting several different continents. He never mentioned the story regarding the cannibalism, and I'm assuming that he hadn't heard about them. Either way, it was a very interesting opportunity to hear his story.

It certainly is depressing. But World War 2 was the start of the destruction of beautiful Manila. So many colonial buildings survived the war yet most has fallen to the hands of Filipinos having no care for architecture at all. We did the rest of destroying Manila's architectural beauty. I also made up a saying about it : World War 2 may have destroyed Intramuros, but Filipinos destroyed Manila.

My maternal grandfather served as a pharmacist aboard a battleship in the Pacific. There is a small chance that Bush and him might've crossed path.
I imagine George H. W. Bush walking up to the pharmacy counter and saying "Hey Clark. Can you get me an aspirin?" Maybe even right after he survived this.
I bought the FlyBoys book on an Air Museum in Hamilton ON. The museum used the sale of books and donations to keep a WW2 bomber Lancaster alive. The book was surprisingly good and very emotional as they describe in details what happened in that island, it includes pictures of the flyboys and the Japanese captors, including Bush visit to the island years later. I strongly recommend the read.

My grandfather was serving aboard the USS San Jacinto when this incident happened as a gunners mate.
He told me this story when I was a little kid so it's pretty cool to see it being told again on your channel.

My Great-great Uncle fought in World War II (for Britain), in The Battle Of Singapore, and he was captured by The Japanese. And he was killed when the ship that he was on got bombed by The Americans, who had no idea that it was harbouring prisoners.

The Chinese in WW2 had 20,000,000 deaths with only 4,000,000 of them being military personnel, and just remember the ONLY country China was fighting at that time was Japan.

Every president doesn't really have a massive impact normally during their first term but our current president has a tendency to act away from the normality of things.
