The incredible true story of Solomon Perel, a Jewish teenager who at the height of the Second World War found refuge in the most unlikely of places, among the ranks of the German Wehrmacht itself. Solomon, affectionately nicknamed 'Sally' by his family and friends, would spend the entirety of the war hiding in plain sight first as a member of the German infantry and later as a well-respected member of the Hitler Youth. As the Jewish population was hunted all around him, Solomon was forced to live in constant fear that his secret would be exposed and his life extinguished. Discover the remarkable ventures and challenges that lay before Solomon as he coped with life in Nazi Germany and wrestled to protect his hidden identity.

He actually came to my school my school about two years ago to talk about what he experienced. He seemed to be a pretty cool dude with such an incredibly unique past, both tragic and awe-inspiring.

He’s still alive?!

He's a good man and I'm sorry for the loss of his family.
He once spoke at my german school in 2009. He actually sat in a tram, that went right trough that Ghetto and told us he saw his Mother sitting somewhere on the sidewalk. The tram was full off regular people and he told us, that he had to gather all strengh not to jump up and cry out "MOM!".

And when i was still crying after he was done he actually tried to cheer me up because we were asking if everything from the tech worked okay. He’s an incredible nice and kind man even tho he is really old now. He sold his books too i have two copies and one is actually signed by him. I Will always take care of that book
The fact that you think it's normal to "cry" to something like that as opposed to it being symptomatic of being a dangerously coddled freak is some of the mightiest evidence of the terrible, terrible way humanity is headed.
It is completely normal to cry to something like that (unless you’re a psychopath, in which case it would be abnormal to cry, and more normal to think others are weird for crying. Aka the guy who commented above me).
But wow it’s really cool that you got to hear his story in person and meet him!! What an interesting and memorable experience. I would definitely be emotional as well. Thank you so much for sharing!
I want to hear the other side of the story. What did some Jews did to the Germans why they were hated so badly in Germany. Hitler did not only kill Jews and that's how these Jewish story make it seem. I don't believe these people. Listening to one side of the story is always appealing. It's just like court cases defendant and plaintiff. If you just hear one side it seems the other side is guilty.

This is the craziest ww2 story ive heard by far. The fact that he was found out twice and just survived through sheer luck and kindness BOTH TIMES is insane.
It’s pretty crazy, but not quite the craziest, like believing there’s a holocaust going on that allied intelligence doesn’t believe exists, so he fakes being Jewish and purposely lets himself be caught and sent to Auschwitz only to gather information, and escape. Just to have the Allies not believe him, so he does it again, takes photos for proof, escapes again, only to be caught by the USSR following the end of WWII and then shot upon escaping from their prison.
Not to undersell the danger of the situation but it is less likely than people think that a random German will decide to condemn you to death or forced labor just because of your ethnicity. The SS was not the majority of Germans or even the majority of the German military.

Solomon Perel visited my school 13 years ago to share his story, it was a deeply touching experience. I'll remember him for his fantastic sense of humor, he was one of the funniest people I've ever met, although what he went through. At the end of his talk, he said that hearing the laughter of kids and teenagers felt like his own personal victory in WW2. He ended up with "Always smile". A true hero.

His story was also covered in a film all but lost to the ages called "Europa Europa." I remember seeing it as a boy and was one of my favorite (and almost only) foreign films.

Sally Perel came to our school once to give a speech and answer questions. I remember him as a very kind man but you could feel his pain and sadness when he talked about what he lived through. When some of the students (germans, btw) apologised to him for what their grandparents and great-grandparents had done, he said in a very serious and almost strict tone: you don't need to apologise, because it wasn't you who committed these crimes. I absolutely loved this attitude. He didn't seek revenge or feel resentment towards anybody. He just gave us one order: to not allow that horror to happen again.
Its happening again in Gaza. Germans are funding it. They are terrible human beings
I once met him actually. He was invited to my school in Hamburg 5 years ago or so and got Interviewed. I was sitting in the audience and got to listen to his stories. There were actually multiple people who witnessed important events in history, that got invited to our school. It was very interesting hearing all those stories. Rest in peace Sally

Agreed, then again we weren’t there, but, that’s not impossible.
@@Valentineatelier I definitely believe alot of people didn't know what was truly going on as a guy like him with his families lives at stake would of been suspicious to say the least. However I also believe alot of Germans did know what was going on and used the I didn't know excuse as a get out card. It wasn't a small operation and for every person who worked in had families who will have heard stuff.
@UCVKgfU0xtass7TTp-IcjsmA so you think the Germans knew that hilter was going to murder thousands of German kids, men, woman and disabled? Or did they just protest in the streets for fun
They probably didn’t tell the germans so they don’t scrutinize their government
When you understand the propaganda network the Nazi's used, it's easy to see how the SS knew exactly what was happening, and word most definitely got out, but it was said it was just a conspiracy against the great state that was the Reich. Every day German citizens would have heard rumors and said its being spread by British, Russian or American operatives or the like. Some people knew, and more were told, but only the ones who saw it could for sure say it happened. It's even where the deniers today come from, still confusing propaganda for reality. It's why they took pictures, because they knew people would say this never happened.
He came to our school multiple times, I've must at least seen him twice. Sally Perel Also went to my school last year ago. This time it was his 2nd time visiting, his story is truly interesting, he would say his story about the past to the audience, after telling about his story we we’re allowed to question him (what he saw. Experienced)
We also watched the movie with him, bought his books.
The German medical officer who was interested in him, truly saved his life, twice, once on not disclosing his identity and the other by covering him in explosion. That person, is a true romantic hero trying to save his young lover that turned to become true friends.
In another comment chain, there is a quote from Solomon referencing that event. This video used much kinder words than Solomon did. Apparently the officer tried to rape Solomon in the showers and only stopped when he saw that he was Jewish. Solomon wasn't his young lover. They may have became "friends" only because they were two minorities that the Nazis would like dead, and so Solomon could keep an eye on the officer to make sure the officer didn't expose his true identity.
I mean it’s a little screwed up because Solomon was a minor, and also the Germans hated gays as much as Jews so if he was found out he’d be in hot water as well. Kind of was in both of their best interests to cover for each other
@@mattdrives4757 Even then, he protected Solomon with his life in the face of death. I won't belittle him any bit, knowing how ugly human beings could be.
They weren't lovers. He was a predator who was attempting to take advantage of a 16 y/o boy.
The German officer sacrificed himself because he fell in love with a Jewish boy that he tried to rape nearly half his age and people think he's a hero?
Your story is a poignant reminder of the resilience and bravery of individuals facing unimaginable challenges. Solomon Perel's journey is both harrowing and inspiring, showcasing the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

I met Solomon Perel when he spoke in Flensburg in 1994. I have his autograph in my copy of his book [Ich war Hitlerjunge Salomon] and I saw the film "Europa Europa" based on his story in 1993. In his words, his life during the war was a tension between his father's instruction "Vergiß nicht, wer du bist" [Don't forget who you are] and his mother's instruction "Du sollst leben!" [You should/must live!"]. When he signed my book [well, the piece of paper I carried back to my book in New Zealand] he wrote in Yiddish "Du sollst leben!". He had to forget who he was to live. Although, ultimately he never completely forgot who he was. He also wrote "Schalom", Shalom, peace, on that piece of paper. I think all three statements are intrinsic to the finer qualities of the human spirit. Vielen dank Sally.
When I was in high school, in 11th grade, Shlomo visited us and told us his truly amazing story. It's nice to see a video that serves as a refreshment of his story.
2 things, he told us his made up/fake name was Joseph Peters, not Purgel or however it is said in the video, but I suspect Peters may be a shortening or a nickname. Those moments when life provide a better story than any movie that ever was
Finally I’m so glad you’re talking about this I’ve been waiting for somebody to do a story about him for sometime. I’ve seen his movie the first time I saw A movie about him was called Europa Europa but for years I never even knew who this guy was. I looked it up on the Internet and I never got an answer until movie recap finally just nearly 17 years later I finally know he where Soloman is. I’m really happy that he was able to survive World War II the holocaust it’s just incredible what lengths he went to survive.
You should do a video about slavomir rawicz, his story is extremely fascinating, he walked from a Siberian prison camp to British controlled India
Oh is THAT where he escaped to? I'd heard the story that it took him three years to get there, but never knew his destination.
He walked more than the entire length of china
There is film about him, The Way Back (2010).. based on his book "The Long Walk". It was crazy how he was determined to walk, to freedom.
Can’t believe Ive never heard this story!! Seems like being able to speak more than one language has been the backbone to a lot of similar stories.
i think this story would be a great inspiration for a great movie.
I need a Netflix series of this man's life right now
A movie has made about it in 1990 called "Europa Europa"
There's a great documentary online called "The greatest story never told"
Really a beautiful and awe-inspiring film
