The incredible true story of Solomon Perel, a Jewish teenager who at the height of the Second World War found refuge in the most unlikely of places, among the ranks of the German Wehrmacht itself. Solomon, affectionately nicknamed 'Sally' by his family and friends, would spend the entirety of the war hiding in plain sight first as a member of the German infantry and later as a well-respected member of the Hitler Youth. As the Jewish population was hunted all around him, Solomon was forced to live in constant fear that his secret would be exposed and his life extinguished. Discover the remarkable ventures and challenges that lay before Solomon as he coped with life in Nazi Germany and wrestled to protect his hidden identity.

It’s pretty crazy, but not quite the craziest, like believing there’s a holocaust going on that allied intelligence doesn’t believe exists, so he fakes being Jewish and purposely lets himself be caught and sent to Auschwitz only to gather information, and escape. Just to have the Allies not believe him, so he does it again, takes photos for proof, escapes again, only to be caught by the USSR following the end of WWII and then shot upon escaping from their prison.

Sally Perel came to our school once to give a speech and answer questions. I remember him as a very kind man but you could feel his pain and sadness when he talked about what he lived through. When some of the students (germans, btw) apologised to him for what their grandparents and great-grandparents had done, he said in a very serious and almost strict tone: you don't need to apologise, because it wasn't you who committed these crimes. I absolutely loved this attitude. He didn't seek revenge or feel resentment towards anybody. He just gave us one order: to not allow that horror to happen again.

When you understand the propaganda network the Nazi's used, it's easy to see how the SS knew exactly what was happening, and word most definitely got out, but it was said it was just a conspiracy against the great state that was the Reich. Every day German citizens would have heard rumors and said its being spread by British, Russian or American operatives or the like. Some people knew, and more were told, but only the ones who saw it could for sure say it happened. It's even where the deniers today come from, still confusing propaganda for reality. It's why they took pictures, because they knew people would say this never happened.

I met Solomon Perel when he spoke in Flensburg in 1994. I have his autograph in my copy of his book [Ich war Hitlerjunge Salomon] and I saw the film "Europa Europa" based on his story in 1993. In his words, his life during the war was a tension between his father's instruction "Vergiß nicht, wer du bist" [Don't forget who you are] and his mother's instruction "Du sollst leben!" [You should/must live!"]. When he signed my book [well, the piece of paper I carried back to my book in New Zealand] he wrote in Yiddish "Du sollst leben!". He had to forget who he was to live. Although, ultimately he never completely forgot who he was. He also wrote "Schalom", Shalom, peace, on that piece of paper. I think all three statements are intrinsic to the finer qualities of the human spirit. Vielen dank Sally.

There is film about him, The Way Back (2010).. based on his book "The Long Walk". It was crazy how he was determined to walk, to freedom.
