FNP-9: "A Sig for Less" by Nutnfancy, Pt 1

  • Updated Sept 2009: A quality polymer framed Sig-like pistol for around $450? Impossible? Not really. Check out the well-made and fully ambidextrous FNP handgun in this two part series by Nutnfancy (also check out my DuraCoat update vid on this great little gun). This pistol comes from the hard working and innovative FN Group which has long standing and strong ties to American arms manufacture, dating back to the days of John Moses Browning. They know how to make good, strong guns and the FNP DA/SA series showcases that expertise well. This reviewed FNP9 is representative of the series (available in .40, .45, and .357 Sig cals too) and has many impressive features. These include outstanding ergonomics, incredible lightweight (24.6 oz!), kindergarten-simple field strip, high accuracy and reliability, adequate firepower (16 rds), Sig-like dedicated decocker (ambi mounted), hammer-forged barrel, good sights, good trigger, bobbed hammer, 1911 grip angle, three included magazines (great job FN!) and a very reasonable price. Possible criticisms would include a perplexingly thin-walled barrel (no doubt saves weight), shorter sighting radius. a loud de-cock snap, controls reversed from the Sig series, expensive extra mags, and a mag release that buries in the frame a bit. I have come to appreciate its polished SS mags although not very non-tactical. But to hold a FNP9 is to appreciate its amazing lightness, the outstanding ergos of the grip and its smooth decocking lever, and its superb pointability. Despite a few drawbacks, it remains an outstanding pistol design that appears to be world class. It is indeed very Sig-like but at a much lower cost and substantially lighter weight. Nutnfancy predicts it will prove to be equally reliable and steadfast over the years. ////////////////Nutnfancy Likeability Scale: 9 out of 10////////////Thanks to Impactguns.com for hosting this and many other TNP reviews!/////////////// If you own a gun of ANY kind and are not a member of the NRA you need to change your ways. Comparison to Glock 17, Nutnfancys 9mm standard: WEIGHT: Advantage FNP9 by 1 ounce FIREPOWER: Advantage G17 by at least 1 round DURABILITY: Advantage G17 durable for over 100,000 rounds ACCURACY: Tie ERGONOMICS: Advantage FNP9 (1911 grip angle preferable) SIMPLICITY: Tie ACCESSORIES: Advantage G17 by large margin, many available and mags are cheaper PRICE: Advantage FNP9 in most cases TRACK RECORD: Advantage G17 so far, proven world wide for decades

    Just a quick correction:
John M. Browning first went to FN when he designed his Auto-5 Shotgun. He took it to Winchester first, as usual, but he told them he wanted royalties on this design rather than selling the design outright. Winchester refused, so he went to visit FN in Belgium. They were more than happy to pay him royalties. This started a long and profitable relationship.
The HP didn't come around until much later. Check out the book, "John M Browning, American Gunmaker."

Just picked up a FNP-9 USG recently, since FN has a new model out and the brown frame wasn't selling that well = very nice price. Best bang for your buck period. It was 200 less then most of it's competitors, except the Ruger SR9. The USG version is like if a Sig p226 and a HK USP merged and had an offspring = awesome. The internal frame rails have more metal than the HK or Glock, and can be replaced, since the internals are not cast with the frame like most composites = Big long term plus

I have an M44, freaking love that gun.
If you need something for bears, a Mossberg 500 loaded with slugs is a good choice. For lighter weight, a Puma 92 .44mag carbine is a good way to go (own this gun, it is a sweet rifle). For even lighter weight, the Ruger Redhawk and my personal favorite, the Taurus Tracker (own it, love it), can do the job. Of course, a Marlin 45-70 should never be overlooked for potent bear medicine.

I had one and can say if they did not fix a few of the main problems I had to fix then dont do it but if they fixed them then it would be ok. The trigger assembly never felt right also the slide lock was so far back that the slide had to be notched further to function. The ramp needed moded and polished to feed most ammos. The guid rod is aluminum thus leaving shavings all over and a scared up guid rod after only a few hundred rounds.

Unlike the Ruger SR9 (which I like too), the FNP's stainless slide is of a matte/satin finish, so it is not very reflective. The black slides are even less reflective, but it's mostly personal taste.

From a defensive point of view, I do like the stainless finish on the mags. Most situations will happen at night, finding a black mag is extremely difficult. Maybe, pulling an extra mag out of a drawer at night, or maybe from the floor if dropped which is a possibility in a high stress situation. So a finish that can pick up even a little bit of light I think is a good thing in a defensive situation. Now if we were talking about a spec ops point of view then I guess stainless finish is bad.

Shot the Glock 22~200 rounds on different occassions, and had difficulty with accuracy. After some research I discovered my problem. Glock's handle angle is different from the 1911 handle angle, [which are most of the guns I shoot HK,Sig,Kimber,Walter,DE]. My recomendations, If you decide to shoot glock stick with glock, but if you want to buy several different pistol of different manufactors, be aware that the grip angles are different and you may have some trouble adjusting, like me.good luck

Its been given a negative connotation by the MSM and other anti-gun advocates. So instead of playing into their games a lot of people have started saying standard capacity. Which is what it truly is. They may be higher capacity magazines that other pistols but they are not high capacity magazines. A true high capacity magazine is variable from firearm to firearm and what one would consider higher capacity than standard magazines that ship with the firearm.

Most all handguns are underpowered and should be used as target specific weapons,, even a .45cal. You should never think that one or two shots center mass is gonna take a man down. These aren't riffles! So targets and shot placement always rule in the handgun world. A 9mm is very efficient at doing the job and increased round capacity before reload is always a plus given you know how to shoot proficiently.

The stainless mags don't bother me all that much if the POU is that of a service pistol. If you're doing black ops I'm sure you will not have the stainless mags let alone a pistol with the stainless finish slide. It's more of a cosmetic issue than really any thing else in the correct POU. Will I use that pistol on a Covert Night Ops mission? No. Would I use it as my side arm duty pistol whether be it a cop, armed security officer, or armored car guard? Yes.

You can use instant blue for blueing the shiny magazines. Works great. (unless you already knew that)

@toyotafjc With a plus 2 baseplate, which is very cheap to buy, you can achieve 19 rounds.

Any chance on an FNS review? Wanna know what you think about the FNPs striker fire brother. Worth the extra money or no? Anyone on an opinion?

How about using a product like Cold Blue on the mag?

good review as always. only thing i will say is that my fnp is closer in size to my glock 19. in that case i think comparing the full size g17 mag capacity isnt fair to the ruger or fnp. since the ruger and glock both had the smaller 4 inch barrel, they are more comparable to the g19. in that case mag capacity is 15rds. could always get the extension though

Ssstealth.. Good points all mate. I'm in the UK so it's moot point to me tho.. I'd rather an aggressor be able to see my weapon so I'd have to say I'd go for the two tone. My previous post was just a talking point ;-)

I'm 17. If I buy this gun (Well, my Dad right now) will it last me the rest of my life? I don't think I'll ever carry a gun on me but I do want to have it for hunting, shooting with my friends, and just to have handy. I've held a Glock 19 and it feels great. Should I spend the extra money on the Glock or this? If any other suggestions please help he out. Also, I really want to try and spend under $500.
