Kel-Tec PF-9: "Daily Carry Handgun" Pt 1 by Nutnfancy

    The Kel-Tec PF-9 is a great alternative to the Kahr PM series of polymer framed pistols. It costs less than half the price and yet offers excellent accuracy, reliability, firepower, lightweight, and outstanding carry comfort. And it some ways, as discussed in the video, it even beats the Kahr PM series (PF-9: thinner, longer sight radius, 1 extra round, longer grip but still ultra concealable). Against the Kahr CW series, it compares in value but weighs a substantial 3 ounces less. As shown in my companion shooting video, the PF-9 is a good shooter too once you learn the trigger and get accustomed to the somewhat snappy recoil. It can readily serve as a concealed carry option, officers backup gun, or as a possible all-around home defense pistol as well (a lighter weight, more concealable gun like the PF-9 could prove to be more versatile and more used by the homeowner in the long run). Initial production versions of the Kel-Tec PF-9 were fraught with reliability and quality problems and some may mistakenly think these issues persist. They dont. Those have all been fixed and current iterations are providing stellar service with their users (reference ktog.org for specific serial number issues if purchasing a used PF-9). For most users, the PF-9 will last your lifetime as well. Overall, it is a high value gun that is backed up with typically great Kel-Tec customer service. /////////////Nutnfancy Initial Likeability Scale: 9 of 10

    Dec 2015 Bought one used for $200 shipped. I ran about 100 rounds through it without a single hitch. It does have a sharp recoil. I would say it kicks more than my SW .40. It took me about 3 or 4 magazines to figure out how to make it accurate because of the long trigger pull, but by the time I finished shooting, I had a 2" group at 7 yards, and I am not a pistol shooter by any means. It was easy to break down and clean. It took me a little more effort to put it back together, but once I figured it out, it was easy. I plan to use this for concealed carry and I will obviously run a lot more rounds through it in practice. If anything goes wrong, I will repost here.

    My mom and I went in on a PF9 for a CCW for my dad. Ironically my mom carries a Ruger SR9 (a full sized pistol with 17 rd mag) but my father was wanting a smaller handgun for comfort #logic and it was hard not going with a Ruger LCP. We love Rugers (I have a Ruger AR .556 10/22 and again my mother carries a SR9). This is a second Nutn inspired pistol and we trust and love this dude. Keep em comin' Nutn' and we'll keep buyin'! God Bless you and your family!

    After a lot of research on several different carry guns and finally decided to go with the .9mm Kel-Tec PF9, partly because of Nutnfancys reviews.
    After I thoroughly cleaned and lubed the PF9, I took it to the range for the break-in.
    I ran a hundred rounds of Win FMJ through the gun, followed by 2 mags of my planned carry ammo (Horn. CD).
    Then, I ran another 100 rnds of Win. FMJ, and then the remaining 10 rnds of the carry ammo through it.
    I had zero failures of any kind.

    Yes exactly, there was a live round in the chamber pulled the trigger and nothing. with this gun you can pull the slide back slightly and reset the hammer. I had to do this two or three times before the round would fire. Im happy to say someone purchased this firearm from me and its no longer my problem...

    I bought a PF9 about 3 years ago and have loved it up until 3 months ago. My daughter and I were at the range and she was shooting the Keltec when it began to jam. We would clear each jam and try again. It would fire a shot or two and jam, and then it started failing to go into battery. We stopped shooting and upon inspection found major deformation inside the slide at the front of the ejection port and a little damage on the barrel. I sent the gun back to Keltec and finally, after 11 weeks, I get the gun back looking like new with a new slide, frame and according to the paperwork, possibly other internal parts not specifically listed. It was a fine gun intil this catastrophic failure. A cop friend of mine says he's known others who say exactly the same thing. Within a few days of getting it back from Keltec, I traded it for a Sig P938. I just won't trust the Keltec any longer. I still shudder everytime I think of the potential damage to my daughter had the gun came apart while she was shooting.

    I've carried this pistol daily for the last 6months in an IWB holster at 4o clock, comfortable as hell and Sometimes even forget it's there. I bring it to the range as much as possible and have put 1200+ rounds through it. At first I had many ftfe and fte due to the exactractor spring. Got that fixed by Kel Tec free and the gun has ran great ever since. I definitely trust this gun to go bang when it needs to and not when it Shouldn't.

    my pf-9 functions perfectly, then again I do not see any need in shooting hundreds of rounds through it, it is a defensive pistol. there are plenty of other target pistols and other means for practice and developing your shooting skills, save this one for when you need it.

    I have a PF9, love this little gun. Never had an issue with any ammo, and it shoots fairly good for such a tiny gun. It's definitely one you will "shoot a little, carry a lot". It slips right into my coat pocket, and nobody needs to know it's there until I want them to. Of course, I prefer a .45 1911, but when I can't OC, this is my next best choice, and makes sure I don't go anywhere unarmed.

    I see a few consider the PF9 inferior but I know of 3 that have been flawless. I have never had a problem with all the rounds fired through mine and the accuracy is very good. Yes, one can find a better pistol (and pay a lot more) but as long as you don't abuse the PF9 it will perform when necessary. For concealed carry, you can't beat it.

    I havve a PF 9 that I typically carry as a backup weapon. My primariy is typically a g23 or g36. I just like the bigger caliber as a primary. The PF 9 fits nicely in a front pocket with a Galco holster. I used my dremmel to polish the feed ramp and it made a noteable difference in feeding reliability. My first few times firing the weapon I had to conciously keep my thumb from engaging the mag release. If you are going to carry this weapon, practice, practice, practice. Thanks, Nutn!!

    I purchased one of these firearms and was impressed with the light weight and accuracy of the firearm. I ened up selling it due to repeated jams with hollow-points, even after return to the factory for repair. Also, the mag would fall out, without my hitting the mag release (I was carefull to be sure it was not my error). I also know two other people who have Kel-Tec .32s and both of them have serious isses with malfunctions. One had FTF issues and the other was not extracting properly.

    Same thing, people have had hit or miss with the warranty. Just look around and you can find plenty of stories of multiple trips back to kel tec and still not fixed properly. Look on here and KTOG. Hopefully they do get their act together but right now I would look elsewhere.
    Both Ruger and Kahr have good reputations. I went the CM9 route and have been very happy with it. Zero malfunctions and well over a thousand rounds.

    I bought a PF9 a couple of months back and now use it for my EDC. It's the gun everyone loves to hate, but I really do not understand why, it's great little gun! Just as this review reiterates: powerful, small, comfortable, and not that it matters...but I think it looks pretty cool too. I've only shot about 100 rounds through mine, but it was 100% spot on, no problems what so ever.

  • @8literbeater
    @8literbeater Před 10 lety

    I don't know about all the PF9 hate, but as far as Kel-Tec goes, I haven't seen any problems with my P3AT. I've been carrying it for a few years now, and I've run about 250 rounds through it with absolutely NO failures of any kind.
    No FTF, FTE, stovepipe, no broken parts, nothing. It has been absolutely flawless.

    • @jaibronson6613

      250 rounds is a shit sample size and why don't you clean your gun?

    • @8literbeater
      @8literbeater Před 10 lety +2

      *****
      That shows what you know. 250 round is a huge amount for a brand new gun to run without a single failure. If you want to know how good a gun lasts without wearing out or something like that, it takes more, sure. As for why I didn't clean it, it's because of a few things: I took it out with a pile of ammo, and I'm not going to stop and clean it in the field. As if a person couldn't run 9 mags through an AR-15 without cleaning it, get real. When I got done, it wasn't dirty. Maybe it's the ammo, mostly it's the locked breech design. And, if the damn thing will work dirty, it will work clean.
      Any other questions?

I would suggest folks use the mag base extension for control As well as Tractiongrips for slippery polymer pistols. I would also add on Laserlyte sights that replace the rear sight over the CTC trigger guard laser. More compact & no special holster needed. I would tell anybody looking at .380 acp's to consider this gun instead. 9mm Para power in a PPK size.

    I just purchased a Blue & grey model PF-9 at a Gun show last week end. My reasons match your review rather closely. For years, I've been a Hi-power shooter and needed a second lighter carry gun. My choices came down to the Kel tec, the Taurus pt740 slim series in .40 S&W. While the Taurus was better finished, came in .40s&w, and had a real safety for a $100 more; I bought the Kel tec for $ 300 with tax & fees. It felt less blocky, lighter & the trigger felt better.

    That's why you use hollow points like the Federal Personal Defense Ammo (Hydroshock). Once it enters the body, it's already started mushrooming and just begins ripping through the internal organs. My CCW instructor (former cop) showed us such a bullet after it had been fired (looked wicked)...and he told us that it had entered the perp in the left side of the ribcage and traversed through half the body before stopping (ripped up every organ along the way). Needless to say, guy had a bad day.

    I have one of the newer pf9 models with metal mag release and redesigned feed ramp. I have fed it all of the cheap stuff (Federal, Winchester w/b, Remington) and I have put about 100 rounds of my carry ammo (Speer Gold Dot) and have never had a failure to feed, stove pipe jam, failure to eject or any faults at all. It has never failed to go "bang". I was also very surprised by the accuracy. The only problem I have is after 50 rounds this little gun hurts my elbow.

  • @Zep167
    @Zep167 Před 14 lety

    Whenever possible I carry a .40 or .45 as a primary. The larger caliber is simply a better defensive choice. A 9mm is the smallest caliber I will carry as a primary weapon. The simple fact is that I can't always carry my g23 or g36 due to clothing options. That's when I put my PF9 in my front right pocket and a spare mag in the other. I have over 500 rounds through the PF9 since polishing the feed ramp and have had zero jams. The pf9 is a solid choice once polished and broken in.

    I took a brand new PF9 to the range for the first time yesterday. The gun failed to extract the spent casing after every single shot. I couldn't fire twice in a row without an FTE. I sent off an email to Kel-tec this morning and I'll update this comment when I have a resolution. Given the failures, I can't trust this gun for carry. That said, it is very accurate. The sights are great, it feels good in hand, lightweight, recoil is substantial, but that's to be expected since it's so light. It kicks less than my Ruger LCP, but more than the M&P Shield. If I can fix the extractor problem, I'll be a fan. If not, I'll be asking Kel-tec for a refund.

    I really wanted to love this little 9mm. Priced around $270. Relatively smooth trigger. Right size. But, like all Kel Tecs, real problems. I looked at several in my area and each one had major magazine release problems. This would be disasterous in combat. Local dealers also shared with me their doubts about reliability...although many carried Kel Tec P3AT's and P32's. All and all, I think the new Taurus 709 slim a better choice in this POU.

    Well my Father owns a Kel-Tec I believe its a P11 its just a little bit larger than the PF-9, I was shooting 60 grain high velocity rounds through it and it was very controlable. Keep in mind though Im 150 pounds and it was with light rounds, and it was from a slightly bigger and heavier gun. The recoil wasnt really that bad though especially not for the size, and Kel-Tec pistols shoot pretty well, one thing though is the DAO trigger has a really long reset that takes a while to get used to.

  • @tacticaltrigger
    @tacticaltrigger Před 13 lety

    @BrandonSaldana I would say the PF9. It holds less ammo but it's alot thinner. If you're going to be using an Inside the Waistband holster, the thinner the handgun, the better. It's more comfortable and 7 rounds of ammo is efficient for self defense and you can always carry an extra mag in your pocket.

    @PocketDrummer I carry the Glock 23 every day in southeast Louisiana without too much problem. I carry in the safariland SOB IWB holster and it's really comfortable and concealable underneath a simple T shirt. The Safariland that I chose has a pretty nifty belt retention system that goes between your pant and belt and then hooks underneath the belt for absolute lock against a draw motion. The retention is adjustable.

    Only thing I would say about this gun is to people with big hands. The magazine butt plate extension thing that comes with the pf-9 does provide a little extension, but that lip needs to be filed down to make it useful. I still have to tuck my pinky underneath the magazine. Only other issue I'm going to have is deciding how I want to carry it and with what holster..

    I carry daily and went through about 20 different guns until landing on the xds 45 as my EDC. This pf9 was by far the most painful gun one ever shot. Very lightweight and cool design, but it was also the fastest I've ever wanted to get rid of something. The ksg turned out like that as well for me. I do not recommend it if you practice a lot with your EDC, as you should. The shield and xds are way better options.

    both crimson trace, and Armalaser make laser sight for the PF9. I have a PF9, and it may not be as pretty as a Kahr, but it goes bang every time you pull the trigger. over the last 3 years keltec has been tweaking the PF9, and P3AT, so the newer model are out of the box reliable, and even better finished.

    Just picked this up as I'm taking my conceal carry class this month and no way I'm going to carry a Beretta 92F around. I'm not experienced with such a small and lightweight gun so I'm having trouble with not keeping a tight enough hold onto it, and as a result, my first 100 rounds through it has been wrought with jams. Practice makes perfect, right? I'm glad with the purchase none the less as I know it won't be a problem for me to carry this every day.

    I give all firearms equal opinions before putting rounds through em and testing them out at the local range. That being said, I hear horror stories about companies like Kel-tec, Taurus, hi-point, and others. I haven't had experience with hipoints yet. Between the other two misfits, I haven't had any issues with Taurus handguns.They ate up all the 9mm and .45acp we put through them. Kel-tecs on the other hand, gave us malfunctions about once every three magazines using the same ammo that we were running through the glocks, Taurus, and px4 Berettas. I always wondered why Nutnfancy praised them so much until I went to the kel-tec website and saw all of the Nutnfancy videos on there of him praising them. Only way to truly determine the reliability of a gun is to shoot it yourselves. If I got paid to carry a pf-9, I would make sure I had a glock for backup.

    Another awesome review! Although I have not bought a PF9, 'YET' I did get a chance to handle on today. I was worried about the size as I have large hands. With the included mag extension I can get a firm grip on the weapon. I almost made the purchase but after buying a new 870 I just could not swing a second purchase. Here in PA at the show I was at they had them in black for $174- and another fellow had the tan priced at $217-
    For that kind of money I was impressed.
    Again, thanks !

    Through trainning, I was told that if you were in a fox hole 15 feet from your an enemy in his fox hole. He runs at you and you have a 9mm hand gun. It will take 9 shots to bring him down and he will fall in your fox hole. With a 40, it will take 4 rounds and he will fall forwards. But not make it to your fox hole, with a .45 it will take 1 round and he will fall back into his fox hole. Thats all with standard nato compliant rounds and with adrenaline pumping.
