    Ive worked with Paul and many of the other UK car CZcamsrs who came up early whilst I was working at Chevrolet. I found them spotting cars at the Geneva motorshow I think in 2013 at a time when all of my older colleagues thought car CZcams was only watched by children 😂 I can say that Paul always struck me as nice but he didn’t have the special sauce that some of the other guys had. Shmee has the most insane work ethic you could ever imagine and he was particularly good at getting OEMs to trust him. For example he read up on all the specs of a new car and could repeat them off pat when he arrived for a shoot). We saw him as an extremely safe pair of hands. Sam’s videography and story telling really became something special after 2017-2018 and created an image brands wanted to be associated with. Paul didn’t have a thing and I remember lending him a Cadillac CTS-V in Dubai and he didn’t even bother to read anything about it and we kind of thought, well we’re not going to do that again.

    I think Paul’s problem with his channel was running out of ideas. It got repetitive after a while. Once the super cars went it was a year of going to showrooms am I buying a (insert car) and not buying it. It’s a shame because he is a good guy and good on camera also knows everyone on the CZcams scene. A revamp on content he can get back on track

      This sums up Paul’s channel. Unfortunately his content stagnated and his audience also grew tired of the usual showroom tour and the exhausted video carnival of: speccing my next car, collection, first drive, wrap, exhaust, ten things I hate. SOL has done well to renovate by differentiating his content and launching a podcast.

    People these days are more interested in watching more “hands on” CZcamsrs. Hence why the likes of Mat Armstrong are smashing it these days. Even Shmee ditched his “Shmuseum” channel maybe because of views? To me in the automotive “vlogging” world just presenting is now not enough

      This is what did him in for sure. Look at all the other guys; Shmee, STG, CarWow, Auto Alex, Car Throttle, etc. etc. they're all highly interactive with their audiences, put in insane amounts of effort and regularly listen to feedback and evolve the content. It comes across clearly in the content, in the nature of the videos they publish. SoL always came off as weird for not doing it, people lost interest as the audience felt ignored and the content was repeititve. It just felt like he wasn't really interested, there wasn't any passion behind it, in CZcams and anything he published, and it showed.

    • @HalfdeadRider
      @HalfdeadRider Před 10 měsíci +9

      That is what stopped his channel growing as it could have. People started criticising him, at first for mainly having the camera on himself, rather than the road, as well as other constructive criticisms.
      He didn't listen and took it to heart, rather than taking it on board and improving, and slowly over time he just gave up even looking at comments and carried on as before, which came across as there was poor or no planning.
      It is a shame as I remember having full on conversations with him on his channel and on twitter like ten years back (when I had a small car channel myself). His content then was fun I looked forward to every video, now and for some time, I rarely watch his content.

      Paul is a nice person and I think the points above are very true. Matt Farah suffers from the same things. Boasting about never reading the comments and yet I pay people to survey my customers. This hubris over many aspects of either SCL or Smoking tire in terms of who consumes the product is baffling in any other line of business. You can see in both of them a need to change and in some ways training someone else or a team will be the hardest thing as they don't trust either the customer or anyone else.

    To the interviewer, I won’t be returning to this channel. I can’t stand it when interviewers glaze their guests. Paul averages 7-11k on a 900k channel. Why wouldn’t didn’t you touch on that? Tip for interviewing future guests: You need to ask the exact questions the guests fans would want to ask them
    . You need to be the VESSEL for the fans otherwise your growth will be limited. People aren’t going for this disingenuous cliché agreeable format anymore. Good luck!

    Love Paul, but the content got repetitive. I checked the SoL channel out after many years and was shocked at the sub-to-view ratio being so low. If you look to 'the trio' (STG, Shmee and SoL) which all took off at around the same time, the other two branched off and created a brand and an identity to work on and mould their content around. SoL appeared to struggle on what to actually do, from an audience member perspective, the content seemed lost. Shmee just went all out, pilling into experiences and buying fleets, but also being insanely knowledgable and going out and getting content regardless of if it was his car or not - you watch his stuff as its knowledgable, exciting and fun ... and also a side to expensive and lesser seen cars and places. STG calved out a nieche in creating beautifully cinematic and story driven content focused around cars and the emotive side - you watch his stuff to go on an adventure and how a car would make you feel. SoL felt lost - buy, wrap, exhaust, sell, buy, wrap, exhaust, sell, etc. and with no audience engagement at all, even with people suggesting ideas on what they'd like to see him achieve, people who were wanting success for him. Seeing CarWow and Auto Alex being the most recent successes, they all have a strong identity - CarWow for insane but 'short' videos that are just fun to watch. Auto Alex for the pure banter and laughs, incredibly entertaining and fun as everything is 'cheap' and relatable. But something they all do is they are highly engaged with their audiences, I always see STG and Shmee in the comment sections talking to people and thanking them, makes the audience feel involved and respected, and thats massive for retention and creates a much healthier creator-consumer relationship. Same with CarWow and Alex, they are both really active with their communities - I'd argue Alex is probably the most involved of all of them. Its a powerful thing that SoL appears to have completely missed. I've only focused on UK channels, but there are loads more I also follow that have done a similar thing to the same success.

      Genuinely when the other UK CZcamsrs realised they needed to break away from one another to continue to grow - it appears Paul / Archie / Tom (although less so with Tom) didn’t do the same thing. There is only so much you can do if you don't evolve and keep up with the times, especially when the audience is feeding back to you things that you can do and you willingly just choose to ignore it.
