  • A review of the BYD Seagull / Dolphin Mini, the best affordable EV on Earth.
    ********
    All the hype in 2023 has been about the BYD Seagull, or Dolphin Mini depending on where you live, and whether it will be the car to bring affordable, no compromises, small electric motoring to the masses. As it turns out, it absolutely should do. An incredibly joyful car, packed full of character and grown-up car features, and so affordable you might just be able to find the cash down the back of your sofa. This tiny little car is going to be HUGE and could just be the best Chinese car of all.

    Great review. The engineering team is doing an excellent job. Only China can offer such value in a car. This price range is affordable. A few years ago, a Toyota Camry cost about $8000.00 out of the factory, but by the time the consumer paid for the car, it was about $22000 in the US. The middleman layer is really killing it. The next challenge is to disrupt the buying process such as direct orders from the factory. China will have enough volume and can do it.

      @@Druze_Tito That was at least 10 years ago. The engineering cost is still true. The extra costs are attributed to inflation as a result of monetary devaluation. I used to work for a Japanese firm, and I can assure you that from the engineering perspective, we squeezed design improvement focusing on design, manufacturing, and sourcing into the pennies. I bought the last model of Toyota Tacoma where all components were premium. The car was strong, sleek, and superb. A friend of mine bought the successive model that was a cost-down version. From electronic devices to cars, successive models were going through cost optimization for at least 2 years. The balance was not to turn a good design into a cheap toy.

    The problem is that BYD don't get their pricing anywhere near their Chinese prices in Europe.
    I know that the company has been very disappointed by its European sales, but that is hardly surprising when you consider that BYD habitually have a price multiplier of about 2,5 for European sales. That means that the Seagull will probably go on sale in the UK at about £25K, which places it at a marketing point that is within shooting distance of the base spec MG4, which has more than 100bhp more power!
    Not only that, but BYD's dealer network seems to be near non-existent, at least where I am. And that is far from the case with their main competitor, MG, which now has a well developed presence across much of mainland Europe, not just the UK.
    I am certainly interested in something like the Seagull (and really don't have anything against BYD as a brand), but the price point really does have to compensate for the lack of useable size and dealer network.

      Dolphin went from the under 15k euro china price up to 35k europe price. I like the car if they sold it for under 25k in europe. At 30/35k they will sell 3 cars in the whole continent. Same for this smaller version: for under 20k yes, anything over it it's a no, no, no. Let's not forget they are cheap city cars. And Mg4 is not much better in the ratio price/quality: in china it costs half than a model 3 (and rightly so!) while in europe it costs just a little bit less of a model 3: not worth it.

But not so much more expensive. BYD is is coming for everyone's money.

    Before I move on to other stuff, can I say a big thank you to you & your channel for bringing the first decent review of the BYD Seagull to t'internet. I think I've viewed every CZcams video that's ever been posted & 99% are uninformative rubbish which endlessly go over the same old ground. That this honour went to a Northern Brit makes my heart swell with national pride! If BYD had any sense, they'd entrust the car to you to do the stuff potential western customers (like me) REALLY want to see like a proper range test both in city & while tazzing along at 60mph in winter. We already know that the official range numbers are overoptimistic so the results of any realistic testing you do won't come as a surprise. Credibility is definitely something you can add to these reviews & we are definitely paying attention.
    PS - also some safety info? Any signs of an ENCAP test? The Seagull DOESN'T need a 5-star to be sellable. A 3-star is acceptable (& infinitely better than the crappy 1970s Austin 1100 I first learnt to drive in!)

    • @InsideChinaAuto
      @InsideChinaAuto  Před 10 měsíci +3

      Really appreciate that feedback. We live in a divided and increasingly sensationalist world, I do try to keep things as close to the middle ground and reality as possible. Not all the things I value will be what everyone else wants but I do try to bring my UK perspective to the table. Glad you recognised the Northern bit too. Haha. Proud northerner even if I don't have anything like as strong an accent as I should.
      As for the crash test result, haven't seen anything yet, not even a C-NCAP but will keep my eye open. I'm not expecting 5-stars given the size and price if cars like this spend most of their time at 30mph in urban spaces they shouldn't need much more, even if it will comfortably go motorway speeds.
      Once again, really appreciate having you as a viewer, will keep trying to deliver interesting and regular content. Hope more of these cars head abroad soon.

      @@CJMVector321190 I don't get it. Why is it a farce? if the electronics help to keep you and the pedestrian population safe, isn't that better than keeping you safe while you splatter pedestrians left, right and centre? Because the whole point about the electronics is that they keep you safe, which is, erm, the point of NCAP. And it doesn't add 15K to the price, because modern cars come with lidar/radar/sensors for other functions. It costs relatively little to add the computing to link it all. That is why the base Dolphin costs only about 2K less than the fully equipped version, in spite of not having the side airbag and the smaller battery.

    • @davidcolin6519

      I don't see any way that it'll sell for anywhere near that in the EU. Much more likely that it'll be closer to €25,000.
      They'll not want to export the base specs because, without all the tech and airbags, its NCAP score is going to be rubbish. So we'll only get the top spec, 40KW version.
      Nor, unfortunately, do I see it coming in under €20K. If it did, I might be interested, as I'd be getting €7,500 off that price because of subsidies etc. That would bring it close to i10 territory. At anything much over €20K, and it's starting to get too close to the MG 4 for my money, and MG has a much better dealer network, has RWD and an LFP battery ass well as being significantly bigger inside AND has towing capacity.

    Can't really see this being sub £10k in the UK as every other small EV coming soon seems to be aiming for sub £20k. Maybe they'll meet halfway at £15k which is where the market for small cars seems to be at these days? The top model will probably be closer to £20k. We have a BYD distributor in our town already so that's one barrier removed but the Atto3 starts at £33k so not cheap.

    • @NunoLima1337
      @NunoLima1337 Před 10 měsíci +3

      I think it's 20% import tariff, then VAT on top. At £15K it would be amazing.

    • @davidcolin6519
      @davidcolin6519 Před 10 měsíci +2

      You'll never get the base model because it doesn't have much of the safety tech that is necessary to get a decent NCAP rating.
      Expect only the top spec version, and if the price comes in at under £20K, you'll be lucky.
      I think that it's much more likely to come in at somewhere like £22K

      Yeah, they're punching quite high with their other cars. Won't have the same luxury with this one. MG4 is bigger and more powerful so it'll have to come in lower I reckon.

    BYD had make some incredible EVs! Japan got hold of a BYD Seal model, dismantled piece by piece and examine all the parts carefully and came out a book on the detail engineering of the car! The book was sold for US$6,340 per book, for engineering experts on how BYD got it so right on the engineering of the car!
    BYD Seagull will be a big hit on the small EV sector while the Seal will hit very hard on competitors in the mid range EVs.

      Agreed. I think this Seagull will likely have the biggest impact because so many people want into EVs but can't afford it. This car might finally make it affordable, at least more affordable, in most places. It could be huge.

  • @petercroft9895
    @petercroft9895 Před 10 měsíci +7

    BYD won't sell it close to that price outside of China. It will be two and a half times as much, minimum - it's beyond me why these channels keep persisting with the fiction that everyone will be driving around in £10k ev anytime soon.

    • @albertloxton4520
      @albertloxton4520 Před 10 měsíci +1

      Actually it’s dependent on the country. Price of BYDs in Southeast Asia are just slightly above the price in China, followed by Australia where its price is still quite a bargain , and then it goes to Europe with nearly twice the price as it is in China....So I think it’s more of import taxes and local dealership thing.

    • @jrkr7357
      @jrkr7357 Před 10 měsíci +1

      There is nothing to do with BYD for inflated prices outside China. Because there are many causes for the prices to be inflated like shipping costs, import tax, dealers' profit margin etc.....

    • @InsideChinaAuto
      @InsideChinaAuto  Před 10 měsíci +1

      @TechWizMaster Well currently the Seagull is just in China, launched about 2 months ago. It will go to other countries in the future so a grey import may be possible for you, but due to the US and China having a frosty relationship at the moment, it likely won't be available officially. Not sure how much the US policy influences Canada but I know there's often border crossing so they might not be too keen on Chinese cars roaming around Canada. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think there are currently any Chinese car brands there.
