Would You Consider the $10,000 Chinese BYD Seagull EV?

- New EVs are expensive! BYD, the Chinese automaker known for inexpensive EVs, recently said its opening a production facility in Mexico. With production capacity in a NAFTA country, it's possible that BYD plans on entering the U.S. and Canadian market.
The Seagull, currently made and sold by BYD, has a starting price around $10,000 USD for a complete car. We take a look at the Seagull, and explore it both inside and out to see if there are any real tradeoffs for a truly affordable EV, and speculate on if BYD will be building its dreams with U.S. customers soon.

The only reason the US automakers would be scared is it will force them to make lower priced cars and hurt their bottom lines. They love their overpriced cars
We straight up can not compete, they will go out of business not have to lower their prices..
if you're the 1%
China's efficient manufacturing industry was slandered as overcapacity by Yellen.
Trade protection will only make US companies lazier and fatter.
Our labor costs in this country would still price us out of the market. Cost of goods to build the vehicle is only half the issue
Convince congress to subsidize every EV made by $30,000 and you has an affordable ev car made in US. This is what China is doing to crush your manufacturing base.
I drive a BYD Dolphin here in Brazil. That's another very well executed hatchback. Formerly the cheapest EV from BYD (now the Seagull is cheaper still). I can't praise it enough. Such a great little EV. Very efficient, great warranty, well priced (even when compared to traditional ICE models). I hope you guys in North America get some of their models sooner rather than later. It's game changing.
I reside in the U.S.A. and wanted to purchase the BYD Seal.
the US elites want to ban chinese EVs in US
they just tied the subsidies to Ukraine, to Israel and banning of chinese EVs into one single proposal together in congress in US
so either to pass it to get all 3 or ban all 3
Hello! Thanks for watching and commenting. I'm glad you're enjoying your Dolphin. I was super impressed by the Seagull. Based on what I had heard, I figured the car would be good, but it was far, Far, FAR nicer than I ever expected.
- Craig
Dolphin is safe also. It has the highest Euro NCAP safety score in its class.
@@seveglider8406 Drove the Seagull last week, I'm not new to EV's and have driven some recent ones (BMW iX, Audi Q8 eTron, Volvo XC40 and Jaguar iPace)
I swear the Seagull feels just as well if not better put together than those, the design gets lots of compliments (I drove a light metallic blue), handling is soft but very sure footed and performance off the line makes a BMW M3 F80 feel somewhat sluggish.
Here in Colombia we only get the dual motor 520hp version, it's priced a a bit over 60k USD, for our market that's a great price, about the same as a mid range 4 cylinder BMW 330 or a base C Class.
I just bought one of these in Chile, where it costs $23,000 ($19,500 + 19%

How come it's 19k and not 10K in Chile?
@@larryc1616 Every country has their own fcukery -- it's called politics...
@@larryc1616 Import fees. Countries impose high import fees on Chinese cars, especially the West. Mostly this is because there's great suspicion regarding China subsidizing and forcing the market to be cheap, in capitalism this is called unfair competition and it breaks the system. It's not like it's the first time, China in the past suddenly FLODDED western markets with cheap steel, this led to many Western companies going bankrupt. It's doing the same now with solar panels and cars. Now you think "omg that's amazing! Better for us consumers in the West!" It's not that simple, mostly in the short term. Relying only on China because it's cheap for the West will lead to trade imbalances, job loss, and economic dependence (issues with security of the products and things like not being possible to enforce working conditions or quality standards etc).
The solution is: tax them until prices are similar to western manufactures, which leads to consumers continuing to have choice of product (important for capitalism) because now you can buy a western one or a Chinese one for a similar price, and if you prefer the Chinese one, it will only boost tax revenue of the government which will benefit you and me. Note that states don't ban Chinese products (except the US, but the US is always special) they just want to prevent economic damage from these "flood products" exactly what China wants to happen. China is not doing it out of the goodness of their heart, ask all the African countries that are heavily indebted to China because of their goodness.
Yea but 23k is much more than 10k. makes it much less appealing for this glorified golf cart
I guess you'd have to ask BYD's representative in Chile about that.
Forget it, we’re lucky to even have TikTok to last this long…😏

More proof American ev’s are overpriced
They're getting stuffed with a bunch of things we would like, but don't need, without the option to drop it. BYD is showing how cheap it could be without the excess. It's what the majority have been asking for.
It has more to do with labor costs
In the US you dont earn 200$ / month and you dont have 5 days / year vacation, like in China
American car companies should be forced, by law, to tell the public how much each unit cost them to make!
When the public sees the disparity & the profit they are making, prices should fall!

The BYD Seagull (or Dolphin Mini as it's called here) was the best selling EV here in Brazil for the month of March (it was released on the last days of February, so March was the first month it was effectively on sale).
Second in the best selling EVs list was its big brother, the BYD Dolphin.
BYD is already outselling Ford here in Brazil. And I don't mean just Ford EVs, but all Ford cars, including its internal combustion cars.
This is what American politicians should be aware of. If US carmakers can't get their EVs to compete with the Chinese ones in both price and quality there's a good chance Chinese EVs will kill US car exports, not to mention China - which has the largest car market in the world, roughly twice as large as the US car market - might retaliate by closing its market to US-made vehicles or even prevent US carmakers from operating factories in China. Protectionism for the US auto industry, thus, could very well end weakening that industry in the medium to long term.
Looking at the BYD King (aka Chazor) PHEV, I think it could sell very well in Brazil and potentially become the best selling sedan in the country if priced right (it is only slightly more expensive than the Seagull in China).
But here is what I'm thinking about regarding Brazil: BYD is moving very fast. They are replacing platforms every 3-4 years, whereas a typical automaker takes multiple times as long. Not just styling refreshes, which they do regularly, but new platforms. For example, the Song Plus/Seal U EV (launced in 2021 in China) is scheduled to be replaced with a new generation on the new EV 4.0 platform in China in August, a matter of months after being launched in some global markets. That does not give them much time to recouperate the investment...
So, could BYD potentially be planning to ship all the current generation platform tooling to countries like Brazil, to update and manufacture for local markets? Other automakers have done similar in the past. This would let BYD take costs down even further. And, given their rate of updates, their cars would still be more advanced than most competitors.
@@larryevans6739 I'm not sure reusing old tooling to make the previous platform in Brazil (or any other of their factories) would be beneficial to BYD. The new platform isn't just about improving the technical characteristics, it also costs less to manufacture.
EVs are still at the point where design and manufactures techniques are evolving crazily fast, bringing manufacturing costs down for those that can stay at the cutting edge. Anyone not on the cutting edge of manufacture is stuck with higher production costs, meaning they will likely have to sacrifice margins just to not be priced out of the market.
no such thing as bigx or not, doesnt matter
Average Americans have been ripped off by GM, Ford and Tesla for god knows how many years.
The US does not want to discuss long-term plans, and anything that happens four years from now has nothing to do with Biden.
Wow! Amazing quality for just $10,000. BYD are killing it. Again, as always, great presentation and work. Much Appreciated, much respect.
Thank you so much. We appreciate it!

@@craigcole5497 You are welcome sir.
I heard nothing about A/C or heat, and the effect those will have on the range. Also, what about the ride quality. Price isn't everything. One of the reasons it is priced so low is because all the tooling and research and development costs are paid by the government. In the US, the cost of developing the factories and tooling are adding to the cost. You can't just slap a motor and battery in a gas car and turn it into an EV.

Actually, in China it currently costs just shy of $10K after a 5% price reduction (a permanent one, not a sale). That is the list price, with no subsidies.
Outside China it often costs double that. Which still makes it very worth the price.
Case in point, here in Brazil the Seagull costs more than the Renault Kwid E-Tech (think a rebranded Dacia Spring). Nevertheless, the Seagull, from a Chinese company that a year ago was essentially unknown in Brazil, is selling close to 20x more that Renault's cheaper offering. What expert would know about the deals are out there now, how well batteries are holding up on used EVs, repair and maintenance cost comparisons, how much a refurb replacement battery is for a popular model (like a Leaf?), and maybe a few testimonials from buyers? (several vids there I'm sure)

Australians would flock to the Seagull like birds on the beach fighting over fish and chips.
I want to buy one. Can we get them Down Under? BYD is the most amazing vehicle, EV (Electric Vehicle) or CV (Combustion Vehicle), in the market today. BYD has started to make REPLACEABLE battery packs, where you drive into a Battery Station, and in 3 minutes (faster than fuelling a CV) drive off. They have built detachable Battery packs where you roll into a Battery Station, a robotic conveyor belt detaches the battery pack underneath the car and replaces it with a charge battery pack.
You are talking about NIO. They are the only big player in replaceable battery EV. NIO has some presence in Europe. I never heard about BYD producing EVs with replaceable battery.
This is good for the American consumer. Hopefully now Ford, Chevy, Toyota, etc will sell more affordable electric vehicles.
It's still way over my price range, I'll have to wait till they hit the second hand market.
The premium; EV chips, EV mobility, EV battery, EV charging, Vehicle-to-Grid, AV mobility, gigafactory, and international power grid domains are up for acquisition at the "EV Domain Store". Important for China in creating the global ecosystem of electrification. "Land, Sea, Air, and Space".
Looks like a perfect city car.
china is working hard to fight clima change. however, it is the west now that does not want to hear anything about clima change. very strange.
People need to understand that there is no way in hell that this car would ever be allowed to be sold in The US, UK, or anywhere in the vast majority of the west for 10k. It's 10k in China because of many reasons, possibly the main one being wages. Workers on car production lines in China are paid a quarter of those in the likes of the US and the UK the materials and everything that goes into the car are significantly cheaper and they don't have half as many hoops to jump through for various regulations and stuff.
If this ever comes to the west you can expect a minimum price of 25k but I'd guess between 30 and 35k. A line worker here gets paid roughly 50k a year at BMW, in China that same worker gets paid around 12k so they can buy this car with their yearly wages and you can buy a BMW or an Audi or a Tesla with yours. The average house price in China is a 3rd of the price of a house in the UK so they're even worse off with that.
Essentially if you're willing to take a pay cut down to 25% of your current salary then perhaps you can have it for 10k.
As an American, I think US car companies deserve this. They took away all our cheap options and only work on expensive vehicles that are built like crap to maximize profits.
Definitely! ❤

Even after tariffs it’ll be worth it in the US.
10k?! In a minute I'd buy it for 12.5k *IF*
1. It doesn't come with notoriously bad Chinese instructions.
2. It comes with a real warranty and robust support (readily available parts and people who can fix what breaks).
3. It has a range of at least 200 miles.
4. It comes all set up for at-home charging.
"Commie car" or not, I think it'll sell great in the US. But, it's a niche vehicle, an "around town" car for errands and commuting. It can't do anything else, like hauling, towing or any type of offroad driving. Plus it's probably not good in the snow and it's definitely not a "luxury" vehicle.
I don't think this car will have much of an effect on the current market since an SUV and/or a truck is considered a necessity in the US.
No doubt though, GM will one day rebadge these with some Americanized touches and add 3 or 4k to the price. If they keep it @ 14k (max), it's bound to be a huge hit.
(The guy in the video suggested upwards of 20k if sold in the US. Definately would not buy one at that price).
What an excellent review! There are some concerns though...
This is a bit of clickbait, since you admit that Americans probably won't be able to get one for $10,000 (so it's not really something we can consider!). Still, you hit most of the major points. I would have liked to know whether it will have airbags, and it will have to be crash tested, etc.
If it's $20,000 anyway, I am not sure American OEMs need to be "terrified." As of recently you could get a Bolt for that much, which would clearly be a safer choice at this point. What would really terrify the OEMs are reasonably priced full-sized EV pickups and SUVs. That's where they make their money.
Side note: I hear you can still get $15k discounts on a Lightning. I got mine and it's awesome!
The only number we know is the conversion to USD from the Chinese market, which is $10,000. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Sorry if you feel that's a bait-y title.
Any car to go on sale here will have to be crash tested, have air bags, and meet FMVSS requirements for safety features (like a backup camera). It's unclear how easily a car like this would pass those tests.
You're right about the Bolt, but that is very quickly becoming a used car only affair. The new one will be built on Ultium and the price will go up as a result.
Any new car, especially an EV, less than the average transaction price for a new car (which is nearing $50,000) should be a source of alarm for U.S. automakers. These Chinese automakers have full lineups that could come in less than their American counterparts and younger people aren't brand loyal per recent data. That's why you're seeing to government acting quickly to try to ban their sale - they know people will be interested in more-affordable cars.
@@EVPulse Thanks, and I an enthused about your channel, but we will just agree to disagree:
- It's not going to be $10k in the USA, BUT (and this should be a big BUT) the market in developing countries (Latin America, Africa, India, South Asian countries) could be huge!
- I heard there is now a glut of batteries, which is the major excuse for OEMs to gouge (if they can reduce demand for EVs, Big Oil, the Big 4, and all the stealerships make more $$$). I think 131 kwh of LiFPO was about $11k a while ago, so somebody should be making huge pickups and SUVs for around $39k so consumers stop having excuses. I LOVE my 2013 Leaf (as well as my new Lightning), but I can't see why a new Leaf at $30k would be worth it.
Thanks again for your response tho, and best of luck on your channel! You've got a winner! I will post some topic suggestions in a separate thread...
I would get a top of line byd electric for 20k
74 HP will not be enough for highways. So, this car seems to be good for local drive but not highway drive. Is this car safe? Certainly, this is a wake up call for EV makers to lower their EV prices.
I’m still driving my 1971 VW which only has 55 HP, I have taken it out on long drives across state lines, no issues at all. So a 74 HP car will have ample enough power..
74HP will be plenty for a tiny torquey electric car. Most cars have way more power than they actually need.
Im in Australia, i can buy one if i like, youre just a once great country going down the drain, sayonara Murika.
how did not mention those silver buttons
Can we buy this car in the USA?
Nope.
