As David Brent himself states: the song is completely factual.

I wish Ricky would make an album of his own music. Part of me thinks he's afraid to put himself out there again (after his failed attempt to be a serious pop star in the eighties).
He so clearly has talent, and if he could do something that reflected his soul it could be as beautiful as the Office, Extras or Derek, but in music form.

he has put an album of 20 songs to go along with his new movie, life on the road. Search up life on the road on spotify and you'll find it :-)

Great satirical stuff, and with all due respect to RG's gutsy go, I can't help but wonder what this strong tune would sound like with Robbie Williams or Billy Bragg on vocals.

The comedy is in the irony.

It's too good to be comedy? That's the comedy, listen to the lyrics, the comedy is his melody and arrangements ain't that bad, he's really close to being good, you hear a song and say "you know that wasn't bad" but he will never quite get there because at the end of the day, he's David Brent, he's that close, but somehow you know hes gonna fuck it up, and that's the comedy, genius

    • @Fonzleberry

The lyrics are a spoof because they're too factual.

Are you sure it's not figuratively amazing?

  • @claudio-who-lives-in-italy

Not half that bad. There's a zest of Bowie and softer nuances of other artists I yet have to pinpoint

Suede...so much Suede in that chorus..no surprise considering he managed them for a bit...

    lovely voice, nice breaks.
the composition not so excellent. it's classic singer songwriter style. repetitive and the structure is basics. like more a vehicle for the lyrics.
Lyrics are important but this is like an amateur song because you feel uncomfortable for,the singer. they are busting to make every, precious word heard and it's kinda paint by numbers lyrics anyway.
But I'm sure that's what you weee going for so great job,
I'd love to hear you song more,

It's too good and I mean that in a bad way. Where's the comedy in a decent, well performed, well produced song? I know people will say Spinal Tap but those song are utterly ridiculous in their themes and lyrics and performance. The balance on this one is way off. Equality Street was good because of the silly-ness. Think what was so funny about the guitar bits in The Office and none of that is here. Just doesn't make sense.

So a love song to slough is not comedy?

    • @matthewstephens6848
      @matthewstephens6848 Před 7 lety +1

Meomeocraig That concept could well be funny. Maybe the initial Learn Guitar With David Brent was mildly amusing as he did the Brent faces, etc but this is just a well produced recording of a very mildly amusing but basically melancholy song.

I get what you're saying here about it being too well performed. Its the polish that just takes the edge off the comedy. Brent isn't supposed to have the wherewithal to put together such a good piece of music, its should be a little broken like the man himself. Also when you hear a Bowie homage in the vocals (and you can) that's coming from Gervais not Brent, he's breaking character a bit. Still anything from Ricky gets my vote, but if you're tapping your feet instead of cringing, its missed its mark as a piece of Brent comedy.

One of the major facets of Brent as a character is that he does have talent. If every song really was purely comedic it would be harder to empathise with Brent as a character. Gervais subtly draws out many loveable characteristics of Brent, i.e. his longing to be liked, his awkward understanding of political correctness and his persistence even when excessively mocked. Songs such as this just further highlight the depth of Brent.
