24 HOURS WITH REMOTE SIBERIAN TRIBE in Buryatia, Russia

  • We've finally made it to Siberia on the Trans-Siberian Railway!
Our first adventure was arriving in Ulan-Ude, near Lake Baikal, and driving hundreds of kilometres into the wilderness to meet a remote Siberian tribe in Buryatia, Russia.
Buryatia is one of Russia's most unique republics. It has a mongol heritage, and the people who live here are descendants of the Golden Horde. The landscape is called The Steppe, a vast sweeping grassland that covers central Asia. Tribes who live here have traditionally been nomadic, making small camps like the one we stay in. This is our documentary of 24 hours with this tribe.
This experience put us outside our comfort zones. We ate some interesting Russian food like raw sheep liver, rode horses, wrestled, and had the time of our lives. While this experience isn't for everyone, it's definitely for me. This was one of my favourite days on the Trans-Siberian Railway. The people we met in this small village made it especially memorable. You can tell by their faces, that they are kind and generous. We felt right at home in this remote part of Russia.

Greetings from Mongolia. Happy to see that the Buryats keep their traditions. The slaughtering of the sheep, cooking it, using every part of it, eating the blood sausage first and even the way you mount the horse. All of is tradition. Thank you for showing it to us.

As I said under Gareth’s video, thanks for diving into Russia deepest than 99% of bloggers and travelers do. But you have to stay here for a year to view all cultures living here and meet with Russian regions during different seasons. Next time try Yakutia during winter for example. :)

A dog is a Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound, called in Buryat HOTOSHO! Such a dog is expensive, very smart and calm, but strong. The main distinguishing feature is the yellow eyebrows above the eyes. They perfectly protect homes, simply do not bark. The love of a child.

Such a fascinating look into everyday life in Buryatia. The steppe is stunning and the people seem so happy and kind and friendly. I also really like that you always make a point of talking about the slaughter of the animal and gift that it gives to the community. I'd imagine seeing that process makes you more grateful for the meal you get from it. Great job on the horse - that's more than I've ever managed! 😂I think the Canadian Beaver needs a rematch, right? The feast looks incredible. And I loved the respectful way you showed the shamanic ritual. Beautiful! Did you get to learn much about it? 🐉🐉🐉🐉

Agree completely that we should use the whole animal if we are going to eat it, we throw away too much in the West just because we think so many things are "disgusting".
Intestines and organs are often tasty as well.
Anyway Russia is amazing and diverse.
Too many people really know nothing about what the real Russia is like.
More people should go and see the beauty and how many different regions, cultures, languages etc. there are there. And how friendly Russians actually are.

I completely agree with your comments about using every part of the animal, in Western culture it was always the same as well. My grandmother always used to prepare tripe, liver, kidneys, blood sausage and even crumbed lambs brains. These foods are in fact delicious and packed full of essential nutrients, but younger generations have turned away from eating these for a multitude of reasons, we need to encourage young people again that this is the essence of life and respecting the food which gives us such.

I have always been fascinated by the many Russian cultures, from St. Petersburg all the way to Vladivostok. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences in Russia! Horses scare you? I had to laugh because I love horses!

So glad I came across this channel. It’s a pleasure to see a traveler who respects other cultures, and immerses himself with the locals.
I have one question though…. Do you give any gift, money or anything to the people who you meet on your journeys?

That's what I want to know too. What does he bring to these generous ppl besides expense and germs? They share willingly but it costs them to feed and house guests. Does he visit the elderly, help them make repairs, bring gifts? 🤔 If I travel the world visiting other cultures and profiting from it it is a gorm of exploitation no matter how nice the person is. He may be engaging in escapism from a boring life but to really know and immerse yourself in a culture he should stay for a longer time and contribute to the tribe. It's all fun and games to stay in a village surrounded by alligators for a few days versus it being your daily reality.
