Three Technical Fouls, Head Coach Ejected in 30 Seconds (Murray State vs. Morehead State WBB)

  • During their match-up on February 15, 2020, Murray State's Lex Mayes hits a three pointer in the first half and proceeds to point to her teammate, Macey Turley, who gave her the assist. Mayes is then given a technical foul for pointing. Head Coach Rechelle Turner is upset and questions what the technical was for, and proceeds to pick up one of her own for entering the court. She then picks up a second after she is restrained by assistants while she is speaking with a separate official about the technicals, and is ejected from the game due to two technical fouls called on her.

Having officiated over 2000 games at all levels other than pro, being a head coach for five years, and an athletic director for a decade, far more technicals need to be thrown.
What was said and how it was said are both relevant. The problem is that parents and parent-coaches have continued to whine and complain their way more and more that more ended up being tolerated and the boundaries just kept being extended to what is deserving of a T.
There’s a ridiculous amount of swearing on the court now because it’s become common language and compounding that with helicopter parents living vicariously through their kid’s sports has led to less people willing to coach and especially officiate.

@@brettslaathaug4704 Completely disagree, having been an ump and a ref for over 20 years myself. The first technical was just plain wrong, the ref blew it, period. Pointing at a teammate to thank them for an assist is very common - use your head, what would the player be doing pointing at an opponent on the other side of the court as taunting? When they got together, you can clearly see them acknowledging they blew it. So, all you do is go over to the coach, and say, "hey, yeah, I blew it, it wasn't taunting, my bad". Would have diffused the whole situation and been over with. Instead, he gives a quick unnecessary technical to the coach and escalates the situation.
Too many referees fail to acknowledge mistakes, and it just escalates the situation.

As someone who refereed for 28 years, the 'pointing' rule was put in to prevent taunting of AN OPPONENT. If as the description says, Mayes pointed to or at her team mate, Turley, it was how players on offense thank their team mates for the assist. Hence, the 'pointing' technical was totally inappropriate. @@scott1564 A essential attribute to being in a position of authority is observing, listening, and communicating. If the fact pattern presented in the description is correct. This Ref made a poor judgement call on the first T on the player. Okay, it is human to make a error, either way it is understandable that the coach will have some questions at the very least the coach must defend her player. A ref should have enough situational awareness to understand this. You then listen and explain, if the coach continues and is disruptive. Then sure hit them with a second T, but that did not appear to be the case at all here. I coached HS baseball for 5 years, umped another 5, and walked a tier putting felons to bed for 12., all three required communication, there was none of that here.
Any of you nay sayers, go officiate for a straight year every weekend and see first how easy it is and fun it is to have “know-it-all’s” in the crowd yell constantly at you including calls that don’t exist like “over-the-back.”

Some of those male officials get on a power trip and start throwing their weight around left and right. I was at a USD game in South Dakota years ago when one of the Coyote players was just walking down the court. As he did so one of the officials backed into him and called a technical on him for something he didn't do. Fortunately the other two officials called the official on it and ordered him to the back court. They had to let the technical stand but the crowd got extremely loud over it and let that guy know what they thought of his officiating.

@@nobogiedr I am a ref and I agree with the OP; the first T was never explained to the head coach by the calling official...he just reports and walks away. Whether the HC was going to agree or not, the calling official could have very easily walked over to the HC and explained why he called the T on #4. Then, he only exacerbates the situation by calling the first T on the HC. The second T on the HC was chicken shit and should have been called by the official standing right there not from one of the other two standing at the other foul line. This is a good example of bad game management and a crew that did not do a very good job of communicating and trying to mitigate the situation. The HC was only looking for any kind of explanation since no one seemed to understand why the T on #4 was called; it is something that she never got. If you want a better angle, take a look at this clip: czcams.com/video/5w6UxyvXlQw/video.html There is no way #4 deserved the T; this is something that happens in every game more than once.

Please note the technique used by the ref to indicate the technical foul. He has practiced this technique, index finger of the right hand only and the quick slap down with the left hand. He definitely has been waiting to use his practiced "T"! It is obviously his show case call. I can't imagine what his charging call looks like. The technical on the coach, you can see the smoothness of the call. He has practiced this a lot in front of a mirror and now he got his chance to use it, not out of necessity but for "style"!
