  • Their songs have been part of every good party, wedding and karaoke night for decades: the iconic Swedish band ABBA wrote pop history and completely redefined coolness with their catchy melodies.
Their story sounds like a fairy tale: Singers Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad fall in love with songwriters Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, make music together and celebrate worldwide success: ABBA told this love story perfectly and turned it into music that thrilled millions of listeners.
In their songs, they take the fans with them into the ups and downs of their private lives, tell of love, longing, successes, but also of the painful separation of the two couples in the early 1980s.
The melodies are catchy, their music amazingly complex and sophisticated. With "Waterloo" they achieved their breakthrough in 1974. In the following eight years, the Swedes landed one number one hit after another and wrote music history with their novel pop sound.
Even after the band broke up in 1982, ABBA managed to continue to swim on the wave of success with their music and to inspire new generations of fans: The hashtag ABBA has billions of views on Tiktok!
Their songs are covered by music greats such as Erasure and Cher, Madonna sampled "Gimme", the musical "Mamma Mia" and its film adaptation with Meryl Streep: of course also a global success. The fascination of ABBA's hits seems timeless.
After a 40-year break, the four released a new album last year. In this episode of Arts Unveiled, we are joined by with musicians, fans and more to find out their recipe for ABBAmania!

I don't think we've realized how much of a miracle it was to see ABBA return for one more album after 40 years. In this period, any of them could have died or lost their music abilities, but not only they were still alive and well, they were still pretty solid in their talents and they gave us ten more amazing songs that fit perfectly into their long list of genial works.

I recently started cataloguing my record collection, I have three abba albums and I can only imagine the magic of placing a needle on the record and listening to those lyrics along the world for the first time. The songs are so happy sounding, cheerful and pure magic and beauty, but the lyrics make me question my existence in the world and the reality of my emotions. They’re magical.

Benny said 90 percent of ABBAs success is because of the two ladies voices and how they harmonize. There’s something magical about it. It’s a synthesis of their vocals blending together creating a third element.
Benny and Bjorn realized they had lightning in a bottle when they decided to concentrate on writing the songs and have Agnatha and Frida sing the songs. That was very wise!
And nobody else sounds like them. It’s instant recognition when you hear them. They have a unique and original sound.

I am immensely grateful to ABBA and their fantastic music
These four talented and humble Swedes shone in the Anglo-Saxon world and even had great success in Spanish-speaking countries without giving up their Swedish idiosyncrasy and culture:
    lived in Sweden
    recorded in Sweden
    filmed in Sweden
    with musicians from Sweden
and in a surprising and unprecedented unexpected event, the four returned together to the recording studio after 35 years
and despite the covid 19 pandemic they went ahead and finished a new album in 2021 (which they couldn't do in 1982/1983)
and inaugurated a new ABBA Arena stadium with the start of new ABBA Voyage concerts
the only thing that I would ask of ABBA, myself and their many fans, is that they encourage themselves to finish the production and edit the songs that they saved and that are excellent, like
    "just like that"
    Also, my eternal gratitude to

Ah Paul - I think it's hard to describe to people just how big they were here in Australia, unless you were actually here. I was about 6 years old when they hit it big here - living in a small town in country Victoria on the banks of the Murray River, and they stole the hearts of everyone. They are the first music that I vividly recall, and I think they influenced the type of music that I have listened to ever since. Not once did my brother and sister and I ever have to ask to get one of their albums when they came out - because if my parents hadn't already bought it for us, then my grand parents had. They had such universal appeal - and Australia just took them into our hearts. Fun fact: they actually sold more albums in Australia, than they did collectively in the rest of the world. That's no mean feat when you think about it. We were a country of about 14 million people at the time, a bit isolated at the bottom of the world - about as far from Sweden as you could possibly get. Think of a world with no internet, smart phones, instant communication - that was life in the 70's. And still, they took us all by storm. And at age 53, they are still the music that I listen to the most. Thank you ABBA, for all that you brought us. Love from James - Melbourne, Australia

But I cannot help but feel a little sad when I see what an amazing talent would be wasted if this really was the end of the group. Until last year we didn’t know whether ABBA could still deliver after all these years. Now we know, they can. The ladies still have amazing voices, the song writing is still great. I really hope there will be another song or two to be released in the next years. A song for charity would be a nice thing to do. Until then I wish all four of them as much health and happiness as there is ins the world. So many great artists have died already, Prince, Michael Jackson, Olivia Newton-John, George Michael. I cannot bear to think that one day, ABBA won’t be here anymore.

Thank you so much for this nice video.
I think that the success of ABBA is:
    1. The personalities of all of the ABBA members; Agnetha, Anni-Frid, Björn and Benny are all very authentically humble, nice, honest, down to earth and decent people. Swedish qualities.
    2. Benny`s ability to compose catchy, wonderful and epic music, inspired in part from the Swedish folk music (I honestly believe that he is our time`s Mozart), Björn`s ability to create very deep and wise texts, that we all can relate to. Together the to Bs create this Happy-pain that ABBA is famous for. In my opinion, this mixture is what life is all about: the dance between those good times and those throbbing times.
    3. Agnetha and Anni-Frid`s ability to harmonise their beautiful and powerful voices together.
Ps. Look at the lyrics on the titles “He is your brother”, “I am a marionette” and “The Piper”. Contemplate on the message… Ds.
Best regards from Lena in Norway

My household is usually silent as a grave because any conversation with my elderly mom ends up in an argument. But once in while my dead household erupts into a rave of singing, clapping and just all around joy. It always starts innocently with a tune , an Abba song playing on the radio. Suddenly the radio is turned full blast. After which comes a loud demand to take out the CDs, DVDs and crank up the myriad of players needed to play all the Abba ditties my mom absolutely adore. It's embarrassing the loud noisy singing that can be heard from our house. But most of the time the neighbors just shrug it off because it's Abba.

That certainly was a very nice watch, I feel soooo fortunate to have grown up in the '70's when the music was sooooo fricking GOOD and ABBA such a BIG part of the scene here in Canada, they certainly had gotten immense radio play! I recall one time as I pushed the buttons on the radio in the truck I was sitting, 4 out of 5 stations were playing ABBA !! 😍🤗

I think the slight "uncoolness factor" is a part of why they are so popular.
You can sing Dancing Queen anywhere at whatever venue because it's slightly uncool but a begrudgingly catchy song. The ability to keep singing and dancing to their songs keeps them alive in people's memories.
It's a bit like "Our House" with Madness.

    • @EddieG1888
      @EddieG1888 Před rokem

@@DWHistoryandCulture I'd have to disagree with this; Abba never were "uncool". They were adopted by a younger crowd, and as "camp" icons, but the fact that a band like Bjorn Again have literally now existed way longer than the real Abba ever did and have never dipped in popularity, shows that the popularity and desire of the public for the real thing never waned. The real Abba just left at the right time, the hunger to be Abba was really gone by that point.
As for Our House, I'm sorry but there's *never* been a time in history that Madness were uncool, or that Our House was "begrudgingly catchy". I guess it depends what part of the world you're from, but I've liked their music since I was a kid and there's never ever been a point in time that they became a novelty act in the eyes of the public. They've continued releasing great music since their reformation for the first Madstock.
And if you don't listen to the string arrangement under the last verse of Our House and hear an absolutely stunning piece of music, I despair for you.😂

I loved ABBA from the first time I saw them on Australian TV in 1975. Mamma Mia... had me buying my first album at 12 years old. ABBA is the most significant band in my life. I saw them and waved to them on their arrival at the Melbourne Town Hall in 1977. My parents did not buy my a ticket to their concert, so I went anyway and climbed the fence to catch a glimps. I almost had an out-of-body experience! Knowing they had travelled all the way from Sweden, to make dreams come true. I have loved their music, con erts and movies. Last year I travelled to London to see Voyage. I was like a child again and lined up 2 hours before the show. I made sure I was at the front and centre of the stage. When the concert started I was spell-bound as I knew I would be. I could not differentiate the line between fantasy and reality. I smiled, laughed and cried with joy. I am returning to London this September and have booked 4 shows. ABBA has been and continues to be my joy. My life is enriched because of them. Sending love from Melbourne Australia. If any member of ABBA reads my text, know this... I am so grateful to be here on Earth in your time. XXXX

Like the Beatles, there are many, many, many reasons why one might love ABBA. They were consummate professional and self-aware stars.
For me, it’s the music. The production, the arrangements, but most of all the melodies. Not only could they craft hit after hit, but they are varied, original, and musically very rich.
In this era of Taylor Swift, Rihanna and Billie Eilish, where melody doesn’t seem to sell as well in pop music, ABBA is a breath of fresh air.

NO other group has ever had all these outstanding features. Lovely people above all

Along with the many accolades already mentioned in these comments, I would add that it is incredibly impressive that they accomplished such vivid, diverse-themed song writing and vocal arrangements across a spectrum of feelings in what was not their first language. And English isn't the easiest of the languages to learn and master for most people, as I learned in international travel settings and partly as a language arts/other-languages teacher for a portion of my professional life.
