  • In Hanover Adventure Zoo, white-belted ruffed lemurs enjoy enrichment. We talked to zookeeper Frank Wilhelms and curator Fabian Krause about it and the management of this group.
There are three subspecies of the black-and-white ruffed lemur (Varecia variegata), one of which is the white-belted ruffed lemur (Varecia variegata subcincta). Since the end of 2017, a bachelor group lives in the tropical house in Hannover Adventure Zoo.
In general, the black-and-white ruffed lemurs are all considered to be very threatened. From 1997 to 2001 there was a release program, in which 13 animals were brought into nature in three groups in Madagascar. The release had to be stopped in order not to overcrowd the few remaining habitats.
Indeed, habitat loss is a major problem. Currently, conservationists would like to put more habitats under protection so that there is space for the animals again. In the course of this, releases to the wild could become necessary again.
It is therefore important that this species and its subspecies are actively preserved in human care - through trustworthy breeding projects. It is also important to hold and show bachelor groups.
Black-and-white ruffed lemurs can be seen in European zoos since the second half of the 19th century, and thanks to these animals, there are now such good and serious breeding projects for the lemur species. Today, around 200 zoos in Europe alone have black-and-white ruffed lemurs.
Although there is no breeding in Hanover, such a bachelor group is extremely important for the breeding project. This may sound contradictory at first glance, but it is super logical if you listen to the experts in the video.
» the white-belted ruffed lemurs are not the only lemurs in Hannover Adventure Zoo as you can see here: • Erlebnis-Zoo Hannover:...

Larvensifakas werden nicht in europäischen Zoos gehalten.
