There is atmospheric science behind this as global warming decreases the temperature differential between the high latitudes and mid-latitudes which drives the jet stream, and in turn, causes the jet stream to slow down and meander further south more often and bringing polar cold with it. Simple fluid dynamics (you know how when rivers current slows down the river meanders) and atmospheric science (Hadley cells and Earth's rotation causing atmospheric circulation) and climate science (the planet is warming from excessive CO2). It is not rocket science or some vast left wing conspiracy.
