Worst, they had no protocols on stabilizing a plane with ice accumulation on either wings back then, nor has this crash mended matters.
Oh and another thing, since the de-icing protocols in air came in 2006: when you have ice accumulation on either wing (not both), you need to immediately switch on de-icing for the engine+wings. After the wings are light enough to be stable at high speed, press the TO/GA switch, discontinue approach, and line up for a 2nd landing attempt. But the de-icing point came late, in 2006.

Secondly, if you have one minute to live you absolutely should try anything that will give you a chance for life, recommended or not.
Didn't you see the part at the end of the video about the flaps? If they had deployed flaps - according to protocol - a lot of extra lift would have been available which would have saved their lives. As a former Brasilia pilot, we studied this and many other Brasilia accidents. It’s sad. Another thing about the ice accretion, and decreasing airspeed, was that the power levers were in a lower thrust lever angle closer to flight idle. This meant the bleed air was being reduced in the wings also, which would have likely not been enough. even if they had activated the boots to Timer 1 or 2. Secondly, to have not added flaps was also not a great idea considering the speed reduction. That box that sits on the top of the glare shield, was later added to the EMB120 fleet and was a stall protection system which took into account of icing, and the fact that it will greatly increase your stall parameters; it was known as the “Commair Box.”
The 120 is a beautiful airplane, and it was an extremely fun airplane to fly, but like most turboprops, require extreme attention to detail and skills when it’s less than a perfect day in the office.

As someone who has flown often-for over 50 years now, my greatest fear is a tear in the fuselage that sends me (in my seat) out in to the open falling to the ground. Second to this is inverting or some orientation that causes a stall. True, but its the chance you take, however mathematically remote, every time you step on board. An awful lot of things have to line up perfectly for a successful flight, and yet we take it for granted that 99,999 times in 10,000, they do. We weren't meant to go hurtling through the air with all its potential hazards and obstacles from bird strikes to icing, windshear and supercells, at 600mph in a pressurised aluminium tube full of moving parts and delicate electronics, all controlled by two fallible humans who can get tired, lose focus, forget things etc... and yet thousands of people have been doing so every day for the last 50 or 60 years. It amazes me that statistically it's such a safe form of travel, so routine that people eat dinner and watch movies at 37,000 feet without ever thinking how close they are to death, if just one thing were to go wrong. Aviation really is a miraculous thing if you stop to think about it.

Interesting how many people are telling you how to make your videos! It's as if everyone thinks their individual sensibilities must be considered in every situation. There are mute buttons if you don't want to hear the audio you were pre-warned about, pause buttons for reading words that flash too quickly for you, and other flight channels if you feel like this one is treating this like a game show because of a countdown (he's not). He also mixes it up with narration vs subtitles to try satisfy everyone. Jeez. These are damn good videos and we should be applauding his abilities and desire to put authentic recreations out there.

I was aboard a small twin engine propeller commuter flight, that almost augured in. We were leaving Dallas/Ft. Worth (DFW) for Alexandria LA. The crew was trying to navigate through thunderstorm cells. The aircraft began shaking violently & people were screaming & praying. I could see the cockpit from were I was seated, when the stall warning horn came. I was scared, but had made my peace and only wanted a quick ending and not drag this out. The pilots recovered the aircraft & returned to DFW. I always thought a plane crash would be quick, but it’s the final moments of sheer horror before impact, that takes forever. I still travel via air, but will never forget that flight.

Shocking…low and slow in icing conditions, clean wings and no deicing activation ? Was there an auto deicing mode ? To aggravate this situation, a T-tail aircraft is more sensitive to icing and will always stall the tail first…not blaming anyone here but as a highly experienced pilot, I saw all the red flags as I was watching this unfolding. Furthermore, ATC should have provided more separation with vectors instead of slowing the traffic down. Icing is and will always be a major contributor of aircraft accidents and pilots should be highly aware of that !

Great video. Thank you. Responsibility here seems to fall on the airline and on the FAA. Embraer provided recommendations specific to that aircraft which were contravened by airline policy. This implies that the airline's chief pilot did not understand the performance envelope and that the ice bridging problem was not applicable to the model of aircraft in question. The FAA did not publish appropriate rules for minimum speeds required in icy conditions, and thus placed the burden on airlines and manufacturers to figure it out. The pilots did their best under these conditions.
