  • The last 30 minutes of this movie almost put me in a mental institution! I had ALL THE EMOTIONS! Why couldn't Prim be a chef or something instead of a freakin' medic. I can't believe District 13 AND Gale's involvement with the tom foolery. I am happy Katniss and Peeta got a happy ending though, so at least there is that... a great ending to Katniss' journey through Hunger Games BUT we will be checking out The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes next! So be sure you're sticking around to see that! Until then, Much love!

    Katniss voted yes "for Prim" - and at that point she knew Coin was responsible, not only for the bombing but for Prim being there at all. Prim was 14, she would have had to have special dispensation from Coin to be on the front lines. So she said yes so she wouldn't make Coin suspicious. Also note Haymitch doesn't say yes specifically, he says "I'm with the mockingjay." He figured she had something in mind, so he wasn't agreeing with the games, just going along with whatever Katniss was planning.

    In the book, Katniss is a total mess after coming home, not eating or showering. She only gets herself together once Peeta comes home and she sees that her state is worrying him so she starts living again. Also, the first scene in The Hunger Games was her talking to Gale about never having kids because the world isn't safe. In the books its more clear, while hunting Gale was always very good with traps while Katniss was good with the bow and arrow, so Gale started to work with district 13 to design bombs and traps, and one of that he shows katniss has this kind of trap to "attract people in", so must likely the ideia of the bomb that killed Prim came from Gale.

    Katniss knew she was going to kill Coin from the moment she said yes. When she says yes she says "for Prim". Katniss knows that Prim would never approve of the new hunger games, but instead the "for Prim" was more so saying that she would end the violence and also seek revenge for the reason Prim was dead (Coin)

  • @emilyk5168
    @emilyk5168 Před měsícem +69

    One thing they don't really explain is that Prim was too young to be in the middle of the fighting. Yes, she was training as a medic but she's still just 14, "someone high up" (Coin) had to authorize her to be there. And she did it specifically so Prim would be killed and Katniss would be unhinged. Katniss says "yes" at the meeting to make Coin think her plan worked. Thus Coin lets down her guard when Katniss has the arrow. Also Haymitch figures out she is up to something. They did not really vote yes to another Games.
    In the book, Plutarch is there when Katniss is released from jail for assassinating the President. In the film it is just Haymitch and he reads a letter from Plutarch. This is because the Philip Seymour Hoffman died and wasn't able to be in the scene. Katniss did everything Plutarch wanted her to, but Katniss is still a bit leery of him because his plan allowed for so many deaths. He goes on to produce a singing competition show and Katniss refuses to be on it.

    Quote from the book during the real or not real moment:
    "On the night I feel that thing again, the hunger that overtook me on the beach, I know this would have happened anyway. That what I need to survive is not Gale's fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again. And only Peeta can give me that."
    It was always going to be Peeta. He gives her the hope and security she needs to survive.
    Also a quote from Catching Fire:
    "As I drift off, I try to imagine that world, somewhere in the future, with no Games, no Capitol. A place like the meadow in the song I sang to Rue as she died. Where Peeta’s child could be safe."
    Really puts the ending with thier two kids into perspective.

    So,in the books, the tension between Coin and Katniss was ongoing long before the Capitol assault, which is one of the reasons Katniss snuck out to the Capitol to begin with. Gale was backing her up, trying to prove to her that he was still on her side because they were having a lot of differences mostly due to his more militant take on fighting the Capitol.
    Gale didn't personally have anything to do with the bomb that killed Prim, but he and Beedee did design the concept of bombing a place, wait for the support personnel (medics and the like) to come in, and then blow up another bomb. Now, in their scenario, the support personnel would have been CAPITOL citizens; Gale wouldn't have blown up fellow rebels.
    The book makes Katniss's intentions more clear. When talking to Snow, she did not believe him at first that the bombs weren't from the Capitol; after all, they were delivered in Hunger Games sponsor parachutes by a Capitol hovercraft. But he explained to her that a lot of Peacekeepers' kids were among the refugees, and when the bombs went off killing Capitol kids, the last of Snow's support evaporated and his own guards turned on him. Katniss still didn't believe him, but the more she thought about it, the more it made sense.
    And then there was the fact that Prim should NOT have been among those District 13 medics. Yes, she was being trained, but only 13 years old, she was considered too young to be on the front lines. The only reason she was there and the only way she could be there was _if she had special permission from Coin._ And that was when Katniss realized Coin did this and she did it to destroy Katniss and completely demoralize and weaken her. She saw Katniss as a threat to her power, and just like when she sent a mentally unstable Peeta to the Capitol in the hopes that he would kill Katniss, she sent Prim to the front lines so she could be a victim of the bombings. (In the book, they actually spend like 3 days in the Capitol to carry out their assault, which was plenty of time for Coin to realize Katniss was still alive after Snow had declared her dead and to come up with her plan.)
    So, by the time they got to that round table meeting about Coin declaring herself president and wanting to hold another Hunger Games, Katniss had already made up her mind that this woman needed to be taken out. Katniss had not died in the assault on the Capitol, so Coin didn't want to risk an election because Katniss might back someone else, so she just _decides_ to be president. Then she suggests sending Capitol kids into an area for a new Hunger Games. Katniss could see the writing on the wall.
    She says in the book, _Here's where I find out just how well Haymitch and I know each other_ because the two of them are exchanging looks. If she votes yes for another games, Haymitch will be the tie breaker. And he can tell she has a plan up her sleeve, so he votes with her.
    Katniss planned all along to kill Coin instead of Snow; that's why she added the nightlock pill to her uniform before she left the room.

    It was hard to imagine anyone being worse than President Snow at first, but enter President Coin in the book AND movies of Mockingjay. Between Donald Sutherland and Julianne Moore, they both play amazing villains. I'm kind of in the same mindset of a lot of the fandom that Gale is partially to blame for what happened to Primrose, since he came up with the idea for the firebombs that got dropped on the crowd. And it's all so heartbreaking when Katniss returns to 12 and starts shouting at the top of her lungs at the cat after Primrose's death, then fully broke down in tears, since she never got to properly grieve.

    I forget whether the movies go into the details of Gale's life after the Quarter Quell. Everyone who survived Twelve survived because of him. He got as many people as he could out. They got to Thirteen, and Gale threw himself into being a rebel, like he'd been dying to for years. He really found his niche with Beetee. It turned into a quasi-apprenticeship. There were many, many horrible things about the districts, but one of them was how specialized they were. Twelve was coal mining, and while there were trade opportunities that allowed citizens of Twelve to support themselves-why Peeta's family could be bakers-citizens of the districts weren't really given the opportunity to educate themselves in highly specialized fields outside the specialties of their districts. Gale found he had a real knack for technology and engineering. He had started to develop weapons and bombs for Thirteen with Beetee. Katniss asks whether Gale was responsible for Prim because she had seen him developing a dual-detonation bomb with Beetee. Gale didn't choose to adapt his technology the way it was or to send it down on Capital civilians. But he most likely designed the original tech that was used in the bombs that killed Prim.
    You will have seen why Katniss and Haymitch voted "yes" to another Hunger Games in other comments by now, or seemed to. In the book it is one of Katniss's only lucid moments in the middle of a total mental breakdown, hiding in corners, singing to herself, avoiding everyone. It's how they're able to get her off for the murder, pleading insanity. She wants to kill Coin and die. I love that Peeta stops her. He's been there-feeling like he's lost everything, out of his mind, and wanting to end it all. He came back from that, and now Katniss has to. He will protect her from herself, like she protected him from himself all through the Capital.

Katniss recognized that he was the only real way forward out of the nightmare of their predicament and shitty lives. That's why she loved him. It was about loyalty.

      Interestingly enough, Peeta represents hope to Katniss. He's always been a figure a hope since the day he tossed her the bread. When she's broken down, she realizes he is the only one who's able to bring her back some happiness. The same way, Katniss is to Panem the mockingjay, or the hope. Katniss is the heroine who saves the world. Peeta is the hero who saves the heroine.

      For that, and also, because she was attracted to him from the beginning but not just physically also by him and who he is. Because she realized that he was as good as he showed everyone. That he truly was the boy with the bread. When she kisses him in the grotto in the first game, and then on the beach in the quarter quell it's clear even if she doesn't understand yet.
      That's what Katniss says about those two kisses : "This is the first kiss where I actually feel stirring inside my chest. Warm and curious.
      This is the first kiss that makes me want another."
      "But there was only one kiss that made me feel something stir deep inside. Only one that made me want more. But my head wound started bleeding and he made me lie down. This time, there is nothing but us to interrupt us. And after a few attempts, Peeta gives up on talking. The sensation inside me grows warmer and spreads out from my chest, down through my body, out along my arms and legs, to the tips of my being. Instead of satisfying me, the kisses have the opposite effect, of making my need greater. I thought I was something of an expert on hunger, but this is an entirely new kind."
      It was always Peeta. Clearly. The only reason she wasn't sure, is because she didn't knew what it was, and they were in a war and she was not thinking about love, plus Gale made her feel guilty numerous times for no reasons !!! But since that first kiss... She knew without knowing that it was Peeta. I always thought that, never changed my mind about it. Because of those thoughts she has when kissing him.

    Aww it’s always bittersweet to get to the ending of The Hunger Games series. I love this series so much & I’ve really enjoyed your reactions to it. Can’t wait for the prequel to come.
    I remember reading the books & being so shocked Prim died. Like she’d always be left out from the conflict… that her life never seemed in danger except when she’s called at the reaping in the beginning which sets of the whole chain of events. Then having her in the middle of a war & her becoming a casualty of it… just completely left me speechless. Did not see it coming at all. Didn’t see her death also being a consequence of Gale’s battle plan either.
    After everything Katniss had been through the save her sister only to lose her anyway just shattered my heart into pieces for her. And she lost her friendship with Gale because how could you ever look at him the same way again after it was his idea that killed her sister? Just wow. Incredible writing though.
    But we got our boy Peeta back. The final paragraph in the books in one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever read in my life & it perfectly explains why Katniss was always going to end up with Peeta. You have to check it out one day!

  • @frozenpiper2
    @frozenpiper2 Před 16 dny +2

    In the book, Katniss grieved for a very long time. Then one day Peeta was there and they grieved together for all those they had lost. Katniss never wanted kids even after the revolution ended but Peeta did. She relented and I think she was happy she did. Jennifer Lawrence acted the hell out of that last scene. You could see how haunted she was even after all of that time. Also, those were Lawrence's niece and nephew who played Katniss and Peeta's kids at the end.

I wake screaming from nightmares of mutts and lost children. But his arms are there to comfort me. And eventually his lips. On the night I feel that thing again, the hunger that overtook me on the beach, I know this would have happened anyway. That what I need to survive is not Gale's fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again. And only Peeta can give me that. So after, when he whispers, "You love me. Real or not real?" I tell him, "Real.”

    One of the changes from the books that bothers me the most is how Katniss gets to the front lines. You commented on several bits that don't make sense, all of which stem from that change: you mentioned that you thought Johanna would want to go too, you pointed out that it was dangerous for Katniss, and that she should be covering her face since she's so recognizable. Yes, yes, and yes. That would be because they changed it from the books where Katniss did not sneak over there in secret. I won't go on about it too much, but it was one of my favorite plots from the books which saw Katniss and Johanna asking to join the troops heading to the Capitol and being told by Coin they could, but only if they passed the trainings and tests that every other soldier took. They end up rooming together and training together and Katniss passes but Johanna doesn't, so Katniss gets to go and Johanna has to stay back. I would recommend reading or listening to the books because a lot of great plots like that got cut.

    In the books they explain that the capital could only manipulate memories of Peetas that they saw, ergo wherever there were cameras and specifically in the games. The significance of the “always” moment that melts me to my core is that it was a memory that happened between the two of them while laying in bed, the discussion of favorite colors was done without cameras present and all of the other stuff she tells him is stuff that the capital wouldn’t have known to manipulate. It was memories that couldn’t be foggy because there was nothing for them to fog up. And that’s what makes my heart soar at the always scene, he remembered a pure moment of love, care, and vulnerability for a woman he was convinced was out to kill him. I love the portrayal of Katniss and Peeta on screen but boy in the books they are one of the best ships to be created and I would die on that hill.

    After all these years I still believe that the Hunger Games realistically portrays PTSD and the emotional aspect of finding peace as one of the best. The nightmares, the screams, the feeling of almost being completely numb and knowing you won't receive justice. It perfectly portrays the sheer horror in the eyes of Katniss and Peeta. Its the same look I've seen a hundred times before as a medic in the Gaza Strip and Mosul in 2014 and 2017. That look of pure despair when people lose family members but also the look of pure hope after reuniting with their loved ones, after we pulled them out of the rubble. The grey area where you see good people become bad people after their home is bombed by foreign countries. To either retaliate or find peace. This series bring that aspect forward really well. I met multiple women like Katniss and Prim in my life even men like Peeta and some of them died. I was invited to eat with their families. I've received gifts from their families and even flowers from children. Its hard to find out that you sometimes shared a meal with people that died shortly after. The pain becomes so agonizing that every memory, every image and even smell causes you too break down, to the point it feels almost impossible to eat, drink and even stand up. I like that in the ending of Mockingjay, we see them gardening, sitting in a field and listening to the rain. I do that as well in order to supress my memories. As dystopian as their society might seem, its not far off from the truth. After a while you realize that our politicians (Snow and Coin in their world) use Hollywood, the mass media and even games as a means to justify the chaos they have created over there. That they use it to invade countries, assasinate leaders, steal natural resources and not give back profits to locals, even classify documents of airstrike reports and vilify refugees. In most ficitional movies, there is also an element of truth. That's why I like the Hunger Games. For me its closer to the reality I've witnessed than it is to fiction. They did a great job in portraying those emotions and like you said "the cost of this" sometimes you have to experience an enormous amount of bad moments in order to know what its really like to experience the feeling of peace and safety.

He's always analyzing everything, expecting the worst, being the type of person who thinks everyone around him are conspiring for his harm. The way he always saw the districts as inferior, analyzing everything Lucy did... In films we don't have these internal monologues (which wouldn't be difficult to do), but they decided not to include them, so people who haven't read the books are left with the impression of "owwn, he cares about falenus, owwn he cares about Lucy", and in my view, NO, he cared about Sejanus' influence, he cared about the power he had over Lucy. He never called any of them, always ready to do whatever was necessary to "snow lands on top". Also, the casting choice for Snow being a handsome actor (according to the majority, I honestly don't think he's anything special, just a white guy with light eyes) making people sympathize with him much more easily... She and Gale recognized the tactic, but he did not know if it was their people who utilized his plan. So he honestly couldn’t say yes or no to question of was it his plan. Yes, it was his tactic, but it was Coin’s idea to use it again and it cost Prim her life. Katniss and Snow promised never to lie to one another. He admitted that he wasn’t above killing children but not in that way. After their talk, Katniss believed Snow about Coin. She had to stop the madness. So she voted yes to the Capital One only Hunger Games. Hamich did not know where Katniss’ brain was going but he knew her well enough to know that she had a plan. When she has a plan, it’s best to follow her. That’s why he voted to “follow the Mockingjay.” It was her plan to kill them both. I don’t blame him for being all revenge fueled and difficult because he grew up in the same crappy environment as Katniss. It just affected them differently. Remember Katniss isn’t the easiest person in the world to deal with either 😆

      I understand Gales anger too, but the thing is Katniss is right, that doesn’t excuse war crimes and having that kind of mentality can be an excuse to do anything to anyone. Just like how Snow suffered during the war of the dark days so he thinks it’s okay to have revenge and treat the districts that way, it just becomes a cycle and gale was fine with killing innocent civilians ruthlessly

    On the Capital people would go through extreme surgeries to change their appearance because they’re bored I guess but Tigress was a stylist for the games until Snow decided she wasn’t interesting enough.

  • @babs3241
    @babs3241 Před měsícem

    Katniss agreed to it in the moment so that she'd be there with her arrow, and not locked up somewhere. She looked at Haymitch hoping that he'd understand that, and he did. Johanna and Enobaria were for real, though.
    The other thing that I think gets missed sometimes is that there was no option for just behaving sanely. No matter what the decision was, Coin's tactic was to break the moral influence of the victors--if they voted for the Games, then they were responsible for bringing back what the war was fought to stop; if they voted against the Games, well, what a shame, there was an option with a lower body count, but I guess the victors just wanted us to kill thousands of people from the Capitol. It was their call, after all.
    In the book, Gale and Katniss were much better disguised in their attempt at going undercover. Tigris was a stylist, and she made them look like Capitol refugees. But in the book, we're in Katniss's head, so it doesn't matter what she looks like, she knows who she is. If you're trying to keep your stars recognizable to the audience without that advantage, you can't quite disguise them so much!

  • @priapus1337
    @priapus1337 Před 29 dny

    I hate the Gale hate. Peeta, though maybe not rich, was from the wealthy part of 12 and never said a word to Katniss before the games. Gale and Katniss had a bond of breaking the law and facing the dangers outside the fence to keep their families fed. You can like Peeta better, but hating Gale at this point is usually based on other opinions from later events.

    Theses movies are great, concidering alot had to be cut from all the books, In the first one, Katniss looses her hearing and gets a capitol implant. and peeta looses his leg. In the second book, we actually get to find out alot about Haymitch's time in the games, and in Mockinjay, there was a whole sub plot about Joanna and Katniss training together, and Joanna having to re-train herself with combat, because of what happeened to her in the capitol, she got a really bad case of hydrophobia.
