10:30 I always love how whenever he does a gag with an object like a phone or a calender, it usually has a highly suggestive picture on it, it really just hammers the point home that he's a Goomba stuck between two pipes

believe it or not, there actually WAS an interview with sakurai about the development of dream land where he talks about the dancing kirbys. he says that there's no real reason for it, and that it's the sort of game where the focus is on enjoying the experience
I kind of miss that mentality of gameplay over story and lore. Naturally, story and lore is important in RPGs, but otherwise if I cared about lore so much I would just read a book or watch a movie. Sometimes I just want to play a game with varied levels and enemies, regardless whether all this variety can be explained or not.

@@bland9876 Right, but it definitely seems like the majority of games now are more story-focused. Sometimes I just want a weird “Parodius”-type game where funny and stupid stuff just happens without the need to explain or justify anything. Although I think I just described Fortnite and its random cameos from everything from the Avengers to some TikTok guy to Street Fighter characters I actually recognize.

@@bland9876 Yeah, I've played that, but I suck at puzzle games and it was weird how that particular game made me swear like a sailor so much (I never swear when just playing video games). But nonetheless I liked powering through specifically for the dialogue that REALLY pushes its E10+ rating.

I agree not having abilities makes the experience more engaging. In the new Forgotten Land Demo I ended up ditching my ability during the boss fight cuz it made it a lot more entertaining
I did the same but mostly cos it was easier. With abilities you had to get close up to him. With the stars you could keep distance the entire fight.

Sometime doing the Bosses with no Abilltys in a kirby game can be the most fun you can have with the boss battles in the kirby seriers
@@tangerino3199 there's a couple of Special Mode bosses that spit out a LOT of generic stars, meaning sometimes Normal kirby is actually one of the better strats. (maybe as a byproduct of knowing the player will lose abilities often in hard modes?)

This is such an early point in Kirby's long videogame history that people often forget that he can actually absorb one ability here: sleep. Hell, this was even remade in Kirby Superstar!

The only thing I can think of is when you get a game over, Kirby falls asleep, and pressing continue will wake him up. Could that be what you're thinking of?
Dreamland 2 was so much better than the first game! Same with Super Mario Land 2 being better than 1 and Wario Land 2 being better than 1. Game Boy got good sequels and NES got weird sequels. But then there's Metroid 2, a good Game Boy sequel to a good NES game! There's also Kid Icarus of Myths and Monsters, pretty much Kid Icarus 2! 👍 Balloon Kid is alright but kind of it's own adventure game as opposed to the arcade original, Balloon Fight.
8:34 If Kirby Squeak Squad is to be believed, everything he eats goes into a pocket dimension. This doesn't seem to be the exact implication in that game but it's the best theory I've heard regardless

I know a lively title screen wouldn’t seem like much to people, but this among other things shows even back then the love and effort that is still being poured into these games and it’s one of many reasons i still treasure the kirby series to this day.
It also says something when a different developer works on a game in the series that manages to capture the same liveliness in the title screen for their game.

(Also, fun fact.... The Kirby anime actually addressed where his food goes. He literally has a different dimension in his stomach. Which... basically is just space. Dedede found out the hard way.... He got out before the next episode, though. It's likely not canon. But knowing what Kirby might be because of Star Allies.... I wouldn't be surprised if this was canon.)

One of my favorite ways to play Kirby games is to actually avoid gaining powers as much as possible, only using them when mandatory for progression, and then releasing them right afterwards
Kirby has been a franchise that I held close to my heart. While it's been my second favorite series after Mario since 2004, it wasn't until 2020 that I played Kirby's Dream Land for the first time.
After playing it...I like it. I stick to the basic campaign, which takes about 20 to 30 minutes on average to finish. I like revisiting it alongside Super Mario Land occasionally.
At first, I felt iffy about this game not having Copy Abilities. In practice, it makes things a bit more careful, especially with boss fights. Besides, copying enemies would be added in Kirby's Adventure not long after.
It's not my favorite Game Boy game, but is a fun little romp. Nice job, Goomba.

It's fun to see your art style develop over the years. That theme song is still untouchable
I had this game before Kirby became a big thing. Due to the coverart, I thought I was supposed to be playing as a ghost the whole time til Kirby Adventure came out and gave him a new color. Either way, I always loved this game back then, 3rd boss is the hardest boss in the game, and it took I think months before I could figure out how to even damage Dedede. Didn't think little effects coming from him that only appeared for half a second were actual physical things I could suck up and spit at him. I mean it's common as hell in every Kirby game since, but not back then.

Absolutely loving the new design for your lonely goomba character. It kind of feels like he's aged, but not too much. I like it. Great review as always, it was nice seeing a return to form with something simple like kirby.
Bruh his voice is relaxing though; not to say he’s not expressive, but I could listen to his voice while falling asleep.
I had no idea that Kirby: Dream Land did the series' post-game mode differently than the previous entries, and I didn't know it even had an Extra Mode. That's really expensive for the first Kirby game, a game that's mostly pretty simple.
I never realized the extra mode existed in this game. Even this early this feature it existed and it's great.
