- Part 11 - I show how the R1 transmission works, mention the infamous 2nd gear weakness, and then proceed with inspecting the shift drum and shift forks.

I agree with you: only worn or damaged components should be replaced.
I learned a lot by watching this, thank you for taking the time to make it!
@BrandonLeeHeryford Ahhhh, now that makes sense. I heard somewhere it was "due to heat", and I misinterpreted that to mean they heat up while in the running engine (which of course doesn't make much sense). A heat treatment as part of the manufacturing process sounds a lot more reasonable. Thanks - this is what has made this project the most fun, I've learned so much in doing it.
Completely agree about living with components and not letting everyone else spend your money. If the forks and shifting was fine before the strip down theyll be fine when it goes back in. The obvious things to check and replace or re machine is what's causing the oil burning. Badly carbonised pistons and cylinder head/valves, some blow by, all that needs attention. Good uploads
yes, the tools add up fast. Must have specialty tools: valve spring compressor, torque wrench, piston installer, and a few oddball socket sizes, allen sockets are what I can think of off the top of my head.
SupermotoJohn thanks for documenting this tons of information in your videos dude for sure!
you have been great thru all the videos and extremely helpful i have a 2001 r1 thats leaking and needed some help and your videos will help me get it up and running correctly
I don't recall if a recall applies to the 99..call your Yamaha dealer, they can look it up.. most likely not though, so your looking at a tranny rebuild to resolve it, unfortunately.
Thank you my 2 and 3 gear are slipping and getting ready to tear the engine down allot of info!
I believe that the discoloration on the shift forks are from the heat treatment/forging process
I have a 1999 R-1 and it grinds or slips sometimes coming out of 1st gear specially under heavy load. Do you know if the recall is for the 99 also.
2003 r1 is done for the summer. 2nd gear "dog" problem as well. Whats better, a rebuild to a 25k engine or $1400 used 5k engine
Also if i rebuild, what specialty tools would i need bc those can get expensive
I have been watching this series and it is very well explained. I have a 2001 R1 with low compression. The bike sat outside for about 3 years before I got it. I may have to tear down to free up or replace the rings. Do you know of any possible tricks to free them so I don't have to tear down the while engine to get to them manually?
You might want to put a little motor oil down each spark plug hole and let that soak a bit, then see if you can turn the crankshaft manually from the stator side of the bike, or just remove the head, the apply some oil directly around the cylinder walls and let that soak. Good luck
@@repomannv tried marvels, barrymans, pb Blaster, Kroil all piston soaking. I have got the numbers to come up some but the range for all 4 is 100 to 40 thinking I may have to manually tear down to free them up.
@@My68Tempest I was assuming a rebuild was pretty much a given anyway, rings are almost certainly worn if not totally shot and a refresh would do a 2001 motor a lot of good. One word of caution, with worldwide supply chain issues, make sure you can get the parts you need before tearing it apart. I’ve been having a heck of a time getting parts for a 2012 dirt bike.
@@repomannv that's good advice. I wasn't thinking of that. I was just ready to tear into it and order as I figured out what I needed to put it back together. Thanks. Didn't want it torn down on a bench for weeks. That's when you don't remember how it went back together
Manages to do this a couple years ago with just the manual. Its not that hard dont pay yamaha 5g!! The 2nd and 6th gear was 160 on ebay
The used engine will be faster and cheaper to get back on the road, the downside is you never know what you are going to get, and there is no warranty/guarantee on a used engine. In your same spot, I chose to rebuild.
SupermotoJohn I figure I will go ahead and save the $ up for a lower mileage salvage in the meantime rebuild my first bikes engine/trans the gearbox is toast
The Crank Shaft Type is referred as a Flat Crank
I have problem gear 2
does 1999 R1 has the same issue that you refer to 4:40 ?
my recollection is the 1999's don't have this defect, but more importantly, if you are having shifting issues, you will need to check it out and deal with it, no matter what year your bike is.
Thanks for the reply. No shifting issues, I will have to rebuild for kinda the same reasons you had, I send you personal message, not sure if you saw that.
DrifterGoneWild I was about to ask the same thing, I have a 99' and the gearbox fubar'ed suddenly im studying as I perform my first rebuild
Hi, are you still about to take a Q?
Spencer Burrows I’m still about, but no longer own the bike, I upgraded to a 2018 R1 😀
