  • Part 12 - Transmission gear disassembly and inspection. This is where we have the infamous 2nd gear + 6th gear issues on early model R1's. I'll show you what the problems are and what to replace.

I'm currently rebuilding an 2000 R1 engine. Your vids help immensely and was actually the reason I decided to take on such a project (1st time I rebuild an engine) Thanks a lot SupermotoJohn

ive been a bike mechanic for 16 yrs now, youve done an exceptional job so far! very patient n complete...the only thing i can say is that ive always hated reading Yamaha service literature...as compared to say Honda,..well there is no comparasion lol. Factory service manuals r good , but they assume the mechanic is experienced. it becomes a very good skill in time , that is learning how to unerstand manuals n make the best decisions.

I am also rebuilding my bike but it's a 2000 R6. I know it's not the same but your videos have been inspiring and a good idea of whats ahead. Part 11 and 12 here has been the most help as i do have the second gear issue starting. Your explanation and demonstration has been a great help in understanding the problems and how the trans works and what to look out for. For the R6, Yamaha fixed this issue with the dogs going from 3 notches to 5 in 2003/2004 and can be a direct swap for my year. I don't know if that option came with the R1 but thankfully i can upgrade to the redesigned version. Thanks very much for your time and effort recording your project. Cheers

Any Yamaha factory parts that you order will be the latest updated components machined correctly. When Yamaha finds a component defect, they correct it and replace the part, and when you order you get the new updated part automatically.

I can only speculate that it is recommended because the circlips can be easily distorted during removal along with potential metal fatigue. I try not to second guess the design engineers, but, if you think the clips are in good shape, you can probably get away with reusing. I reused a couple components and i've got 4000 miles on the bike now post-rebuild with no issues.

Great vids.. I agree.. but when you did put down the wheels in gear module, I would put them not only in right order as they where dissambled, but also in correct alignment, i.e. have all in same direction as right side turning up or via versa.. etc..
Of cause you can figure it out later.. it will not fit together wrongly, but to be 100% sure is one thing, guessing totally another ball game.

@bubster1981 Thank you bubster, complements from a real mechanic humble me sir. I would concur that the Yamaha service manual leaves something to be desired, its good, but there are a couple of errors I've found, and many assumptions are made, I'm starting to see that more on the re-assembly side of things. More vids on the way, I was lapping valves tonight.

Great vids. Those spacers are they the bearings? My 05 R1 has a noticeable whine in second gear between 3k -4k rpm and can only think it can be the bearing but haven't got a clue about bike gearboxes.

Hii John can you explain me why circlips change is so important or i can put my old ones they are very good shape ?

Importent question: You changed gear 1st and 2second right? do you also need too change 1st and 2second on the main drive axle? A mechanic of mine says: always change both otherwise there will be noise.

Any idea if there are updated gears and forks you can buy that dont fail? Did Yamaha ever remedy these machined parts?
