It was great the way this episode and the next one (or the one after) highlighted how different officers had different ways to be effective. Medavoy was feeling down because he couldn’t get a confession from this guy, then came back in a later episode and got an emotionally unstable guy to confess to a double homicide by being understanding. Such an amazing show.
One of his best interrogations. Just the way Andy acts all nice before he hits him and apologizing after. Not sure which is better, this one or the one where he beeps. They might be tied for first.
That one is poetic. Abusers often do that, be over-the-top nice and then violent so you never know when to be afraid so you're always afraid. Andy just gave the dude his own medicine.

A way for a conflicted man but an honest and devoted public servant to clean up the trash and serve his community. What a joy to watch Sipowiz come along for so many years.
I love everything about this scene. Fancy protecting Gina from having to look at the guy and Andy being nice and confusing the hell out of the guy before going hard at him. If you think a rapist deserves anything less than how Andy treated him I've got nothing to talk about with you.
Funny thing is, as a pothead, well before it was legal for rec use in New Jersey, back when cops were my enemy by default, this when it was on tv was one of my favorite shows. Hate cops but love cop shows.
I love how Sipowicz shows the guy some hospitality basically to get him to let down his guard and then BAM - hits him with some cold hard reality! Literally lol!

The Epitome of a One Man Scene when Andy plays both "Good Cop, Bad Cop". It's a serious situation concerning a tragic event, yet a part of me does chuckle when Andy goes from one extreme to another and back in a matter of seconds and keeps "the interrogation" going smoothly. It's similar to when I hear "You never want to know how sausage is made! My immediate answer is Why not?, I'm still going to eat my links and or patties! No worries!
Poor Greg! He so wanted to be like Andy, but it just wasn't in him!! I can't imagine anyone else playing the part of Greg except Gordon Clapp. He was perfect in the role, but then all the actors were perfectly cast. This and the scene from Season 2 Episode “Bombs Away” illustrate how Fancy communicates with Sipowicz without actually saying directly what he wants. In the “Bombs Away” episode Fancy asks if a suspect in custody may have more bombs planted in public. Sipowicz says he believed the suspect was planning something else, meaning yes he thinks there are more bombs out there. Fancy doesn’t say anything but gives a look. The look of do whatever necessary to get the suspect to give it up.
Uh oh. Whenever Andy Sipowicz takes off his jacket and drapes it on the backrest of his swivel chair, and that’s before he has to interview a prisoner, it means a tune-up is underway.
Fancy went into Godfather mode by passing the matter to Sipowicz. “Give this job to Clemenza. I want reliable people, people who aren't going to be carried away. I mean, we're not murderers, in spite of what this undertaker thinks...”
Imagine Andy Sipowicz, Hank Voight (Chicago PD), and Detective Stabler(Law and OrderSVU) interrogating a suspect together. No way that suspect would survive. Ironically Jason Begne and Chris Meloni guest starred on NYPD Blue as criminals.
After Andy Slaps this guy and saying "I'm Sorry", later on he slaps this guy again and apologizes again. Finally, Andy goes off on this guy and this guy gives up himself for hurting a woman and cutting her face.
It was never going to court. Even the newest, rawest free legal aid attorney would know that a more deserving client might be around the corner and taking the plea deal was best for all concerned.
I didn’t do research to confirm, but this guy was in a movie a long time ago called Out for Justice. He played a sorry ass bartender Steven Seagal beat up on.
It’s a story. It doesn’t have to be realistic. Realism would be the guy walks and does it again. You want realism, read the paper. You want to maybe feel for 30 min a week that the world isn’t backwards and unfair, you watch a story on television.
Don’t worry they’re gonna make an updated version of nypd blue where the perp gets out without bail and just commits the same crimes over and over throughout the episode while the cops get frustrated and give up
