    Being a welder can be a very rewarding job. I have been in the welding business for many years. There is a satisfaction and that comes with building something from a set of plains and the ideas of man. The entire process, many times, is quiet intriguing and inspiring when one considers its birth as an idea, the research, engineering and design that goes into the production of drawings used to convey technical data that ultimately produces a product, or in this case, a massive sea going vessel.
    The process, and numerous trade skills that go into the process, is for some - myself included, very rewarding. It's hard work. The atmosphere can be challenging (people and places), but it can be a very respectable and rewarding career choice. "Rod burning" is simply the beginning of what can become a very technical, academic and intellectual job that can indeed be quiet lucrative. One must remember, no matter what your vocation in life, a fool and his money soon part.

      Apply everywhere! And if possible try to get a cert, as most companies will prefer you. Of course experience itself is recommended. and if you have any family or friends in the trade, ask around. Sometimes you don't even need a cert to start working, AND!!! and, sometimes if you're recommended by a current employee you'll be one of the most preferred, as there's a ton of camaraderie and prejudice in the field. Good luck

    As a welder, I worked in gate and railing shops, auto body, industrial truck body shops, steel building manufacturer and machine shops. Several constant themes exist in these environments. Tyrannical bosses, deadline pressures, under equipped shop. Drug addicts, drunks, tweekers as co-workers. Bullying, scheming, manipulative, back stabbing, stealing co-workers. Low pay, hot sweaty warehouse, filthy bathrooms, vulgar Low class co-workers. When I opened my own shop and controlled things is when I made lots of money and had quality of work life. Becoming your own bass is best. I suggest taking business courses.

Then I would head down and get a few cups of coffee, and a couple of half-dogs of Canadian Mist. The old boys would have to get 'tightened up' before they would light up an arc or head up on the iron. Use your head get out of this Place it will kill you overtime” I didn’t listen to him and spent 21 years in the shipyards. My supervisor asked me how old do I think he is I was afraid to respond because he looked like he was 90.he said I’m 53 and I light one match a day, chain smoker.Holy shit , he was right. I’m 61 now been in the trades 40 years and feeling every minute of it. I spent 21 years of forty years in the shipyards surrounded by drug addicts and killers. I don’t know where this young man is but it’s not San Francisco back in the day. It was not a friendly place. Journeyman beat the shit out of a young guy physically and mentally and as soon as you turn out , you’re laid off. Maybe that’s the way it is now kinder, gentler. Buy a house, get married, have kids and get killed, or otherwise destroyed by the evil empire.

Id say its a boring job (fits me perfect im not complaining) the pay is very low, where I live the average wage is 21.000 SEK (I earn 34k but thats not very representative) 21k SEK = 2100 EURO. Most of the time they dont care about quality and even if they do, the company you work for usually lack the knowledge so they dont even know what quality they want. You can pretty much pick up a beggar outside the first best store and put a MAG, TIG or whatever in its hand. Alot of strength is usually not required but.. it can be very exhausting depending on what you do.

      Ok youngster. When you get older... you'll need to warm your ass up... Just like you preheat cold metal before you weld on it.

      We have to for the company I work for. Most large companies are implementing stretching before work because of insurance companies so.

      BigBadBeef ,
      Sorry. I work in healthcare and seen brain/spine/open heart surgery and you can't compare a welder to a surgeon.
      Ego says yes... but you lack the education to compare any welder to a doctor.

      he was talking about skills not education. A master surgeon stands out from the rest and so does a master welder.

      Paul Ferris haha the only people that say welding is easy are the ones who have never done it... its always a laugh seeing clowns like you have your egos cut down to size by something as simple as a smaw 6013 pad drill

      @laurie agnew Why, have you ever performed even a simple surgery? See who is the clown then. Respect for all professions is something you are unaware of.

    Gotta be Canada with the pre work stretches and the wearing of a respirator. In the US I've never seen a welder do either.

    I'm in Kansas with two certs from jr college and was certified by a cwi in flux core for 3g up to any thickness. does anyone know how I can get my foot in the door for shipyard welding?

    • @phiksit
      @phiksit Před 6 lety

      Try Roadtechs.com and hook up with a staffing firm. Pay in the shipyards isn't usually that great though, but a good place to get your foot in door and do some travel.
