I used to not like tempeh at all, but I learned a trick from RainbowPlantLife and decided to give it one more try. The trick is to pop them in the instant pot on the steam setting for 10 mins before using in the recipe. It removes the bitterness and I learned that I actually like tempeh! I will definitely try these, they look amazing!!
ang moh style tempeh.. too cute
I have a steaming pot so don't fill up with water and boil but just steam.
try marinated tempeh with spirulina and spicy keep in 3 day in cool place better refrigator ❤and ready to cook
I went vegan in 2013, so that means this year I'm finally going to become a level 8 vegan.
Haha, is that the timeline?! Lol.
@@Simnettnutrition It will be November!
Sweet
I went vegan in 2010 January 1st
@@spanishDoll1 Level eleven!
"A little bit bitter, a little bit nutty." Tempeh is me. Thanks for the yummy recipes!
I'm wondering why it taste bitter. I never taste any bitter tempeh here in indonesia unless it is already rotten or bad tempeh.
😂 😂 😂 Good one!
As an Indonesian, I feel proud you introduced Tempeh and the way you cooked them were the good ideas for me, thank you !
hello, i am not vegan. But i love tempe so much because its really cheap in my country, Indonesia. It cost less than a dollar to get 500 grams of Tempeh. It's really good protein source. i did some search on google, if you want to comolete the amino acid of tempeh, best ti eat it with rice.
I thought the facts about the mycelium were so cool and actually makes me want to eat tempeh more. I just think it's really cool how plants and fungi come together to make a super nutritious food for us herbivores. 🌱🍄🌱
You've been on fire lately with amazing content! And when I say "lately" I mean the past several years 🙂 Thank you!
Thank you! I am trying extra hard lately. It takes constant pressure to keep the views up on youtube, but I'm trying. Thanks for recognizing the grind.
@@Simnettnutrition The work you put in is definitely appreciated. ❤ You're rockin' it! 🤘
Very much true!!
agreed!!!!
Agreed! The quality is amazing
Cool tutorial on tempeh! I’m a boil-it-first kind of girl, and I find one of the major benefits of doing so is it allows the tempeh to soak in the veggie broth that’s it’s boiled in, which adds more depth to the tempeh.
@sookiebird THANKS! Going to try your method!
I haven’t tried boiling yet but will definitely try! How long do you boil yours?
Yeah, it's basically flavor sponge, i usually marinated it with at least condensed broth, some salt, or if you wanted it bare minimum some warm water+salt+crushed garlic for marination. In my place we had marination spice powder already in a pack, but i usually do it with garlic. And just fried it, not too dry and not too wet.
Me & my fam usually eat it with sambal (any kind fresh one), bean sprouts, javanese basil.
Good idea with the veg broth!!
I love tempeh so much. Thanks for these bro! 🙏💚
I'm sure you've got all the recipes you need bro. Haha, thanks for watching!
@@Simnettnutrition you can never have too many! 😆
Growing up in Asia, I’ve only ever had tempeh Asian-style... so this SMOKED BACON TEMPEH looks and sounds amazing!! Gonna definitely check this one out!! 🙌
Me too,I live in where Tempeh was originated. We usually just fry it. Or make it into chips. Or there is some traditional ways to cook it. Like make it into tempe bacem or rendang tempe and so on.
Of course I can find easily tempeh here in Indonesia. Generally it is thicker, wrapped with banana leaf then a plastic. I usually only make a braised spiced tempeh (tempe bacem) for lunch or dinner as protein source, it’s super yummy also.
After watching your video, now I can cook my tempeh with more recipes from you. Thanks yo!!
I like the Trader Joe's tempeh a lot. I just cut into slices, marinate it in maple syrup and soy sauce with some garlic, then cook in a skillet. SO GOOD!!
I wish we had trader joes here! I love it.
I buy all our food at Trader Joe's. Tried tempeh a couple months ago, just heated it up in a skillet, and didn't love it. So I stuck with tofu, until a few days ago when I saw a video by Dr Greger about spermidine and its anti-aging effects. Tempeh is one of the highest food sources, so I'm trying it again. I just bought 3 bricks based on seeing this video. Thanks for the preparation ideas! Soy sauce, maple syrup, and liquid smoke is bound to make it better!
I find steaming the Tempeh for 10 mins really helps the marinade soak in. Thanks for all the help and ideas you give us on your channel.
Do you steam it after it's been soaking in the marinade? Or you steam first and then put it to marinate?
New to vegan/wfpb and to Tempeh and watching this video gives me hope I can open this package that's sitting in my fridge and actually do something with it!!! Hubby and I have just started to grow and juice our own wheatgrass as well. he's 75 still eating meat, I'm 74 not too much chicken or fish - still learning and trying to eat healthy.....Thanks, Derek.🌱🌱
I just made the tempeh sausage crumble and it really is a good way to enjoy tempeh! I can’t believe how the flavour profile is so spot on. Thank you Derek!!!
I've had some tempeh in my fridge for a few weeks and haven't really known what to do with it so this video is perfect, thanks Derek
Will definitely try these. Your videos always inspire and bring a smile. Thanks, Derek!
Bought a ton of tempeh and thought it was disappointing when eaten raw. Found this video and I’m so excited to try the crumble recipe!
Same here just found out boiling it removes the bitterness 6 yrs mind blowing
Omg I am so thankful for this video, I literally just found tempeh at my walmart. I've never tried it before and been wanting too. I will 100% be making all these lol
Perfect!!!! I just bought some tempeh two days ago, for the first time, and didn’t know how to make it taste good. Thanks for the inspiration! ❤️
I'm one of those people who struggles to enjoy tempeh. Thanks for sharing these ideas! I'm going to try the sausage recipe to use in breakfast burritos instead of frozen vegan sausage patties. Fingers crossed everyone likes it 🤞
Always, always love your videos. Your spirit is always uplifting and inspiring. Thank you.
I have tempeh in the fridge right now. I’ve needed some recipes thanks so much!
I was actually in the process of looking for new tempeh recipes! Thanks Derek :)
This was the perfect video for me, I’ve been thinking lately of starting to eat more tempeh (only tried it once) Great video, everything looked so so good 🙌🏻😋
I made the sausage crumble. I did boil Tempe prior to seasoning and let it marinate overnight. Then stir fried with red and green bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, diced steamed red potatoes and spinach. It was amazing. Thanks for the recipe ❤️
Thanks for the inspiration Derek! I'm usually way too lazy to season my tempeh properly, which is quite a shame, cause it tastes so much better when you put some effort into it.
Thanks so much for this tempeh video! My fam isn’t too crazy about eating it and you’ve given me great ideas! I didn’t think about different brands having different flavors but it makes sense. I need to look around for a new one because my fam doesn’t like Lightlife brand...Thanks again Derek! ♥️🌱♥️
Great video! These were unique and different ways to prepare tempeh. Very neat.
I heard a good way to remove the bitterness is to steam the tempeh block on high pressure for 5 minutes in the instant pot, or on the stove for the same amount of time. I wanted to share this for anyone who needs it!
Great ideas, will definitely try! I used to eat lots of tempeh marinated in a maple syrup, balsamic vinegar and soy sauce combo.
I just tried your Tempeh Bacon and LOVED it! Ty so much :D
Thank you so much! I love what you've done with these recipes. Now I have a ton of ideas to work with this stuff. Keep up the good work! :)
These look great. Can’t wait to try them! Thanks for all the effort ❤️
I'm pretty new to tempeh, so this video was very useful and convient. I loved the tempeh sausage version, that's so creative. When I make mine I keep it real simple and marinate some tempeh strips in coconut aminos for an hour, then bake it and it's SO good! Thanks for sharing!!
Wow. Going to make all of these. I only ever just threw tempeh into stir frys to pad out something else that had all of the flavour. My family is going to love these three combos!
Thanks Derek. These look great. I've got a pack in the fridge just waiting for one of these!
I used to pronounce every syllable in "W" sauce too but my Britsh boss taught me that the correct pronunciation is "worse-te-sure."
Thank you Derek. Love your ideas and recipes.
i've been vegan for about 8 months now, you're videos have definitely helped me learn some ways to eat vegan but in a healthy way, because i've been a junk food vegan for a while now. still hitting the gym hard but doing my best to get into prep and follow some of your recipes! you're inspiring, so thank you!
Looking forward to trying these!
Thanks as always, Derek 💖💖
Thank you Derek. I really enjoy tempeh in tacos but love this sausage idea. I have not tried the bacon yet. Thank you for the delicious simple recipes.!
They all look delicious! I like crumbling up tempeh in Bolognese and Chilli. Gaz has a great sweet n sour tempeh recipe also.
Thanks for sharing this information. I've only used tempeh a few times. This will definitley help in using it more often. ✌👏👏👏
Haven’t tried tempeh even though I bought some. Now I will! Thanks for putting recipe in description.
Thanks so much!!! Been wanting to make tempeh but have been so intimidated! Not anymore!! Can't wait to try these!! 😋
I'm definitely going to be using your crumble technique to make some tempeh chili. Thanks a bunch for this easy to follow video. All the best. 👊🏾
Excited to try these. Grocery shopping after work!! Thank you!
I've never been able to flavor tempeh in a way that makes it palatable for me. I'll give these a try. Thanks!
Derek! Looove seeing you killing it in the youtube space. Thanks for your videos :)
Thanks for this video bro, you always give amazing suggestions!
Wow thank you so much! I’m new to vegan due to digestive issues, although I have to stay away from some trigger foods and sodium, but this gives me some awesome alternatives! I’m new to temphe and tofu!
Love your ideas! Great colors and simple instructions. You rock!! I am going to share with my cooking class today! Cancer survivors learning to eat and love soy!!
Thank you for the great content ! This was exactly what I was looking for :)
Love your work mate!
I’m gonna use one of these recipes for dinner tonight!!
I made the bacon this morning for breakfast and really enjoyed it. This evening I broke a couple of pieces up as a topping for my salad, which tasted even better than I expected! I’ll be making the other versions soon.
That was the first time I've heard of boiling tempeh to remove the bitterness. Ill definitely try that! Thank you! 😁
💖🌱 Another great vid. Thanks for the recipes in the description box!
Just bought tempeh for the first time. Thank goodness I found a video thanks 🙏
The Smoke” bacon” tempeh is amazing!
Yes it is!
Thanks for the tempeh ideas. I always struggle with tempeh, so I appreciate it!
Thanks for another great video. We will have to give this a try. The only tempeh we have tried is the pre flavored ones. The bbq bites looked good!!
I love tempeh! The mold on the tempeh is the same type as in camembert cheese. I think tastewhise it has a bit of that cheesy flavor and I love the texture 😊 Greets from Germany ✌🏻
I eat all 3 of these and they are delicious! Tempeh is one of the few legumes that I can easily digest.
Love tempeh :D I make it in similar ways, slightly different. Thanks for inspiring all of us! Also, steaming tempeh is good for another reason then just getting rid of the overpowering flavour, it also helps soak up the marinade better! :)
We made the sausage crumble tonight, and it was great! I'll be making more tempeh dishes from now on. Thanks Derek!
I’ve only had tempeh a couple of times and I’ve always been interested in incorporating it into my diet. Thanks for this video! Gonna get these plant-based gains 🌱 💪🏼
Awesome! I hope you enjoy it.
So glad to have found this cooked it once and it was nasty tasting. I’m absolutely sure that these recipes will help a ton. Thank you so much. I’m going to try again. Thanks to you!
Thank you for sharing delicious meals. Your spice jars are super cute!
I love tempeh! I‘ll have it 2-3 times a week at least! Unfortunately its still not very popular in germany and its still kinda hard to get. I hope to see its popularity rise in the future.
Also shoutout to you derek for these tasty recipes! 😋
Thank you!!! I am a bodybuilder looking for some meat alternatives. Can’t wait to try these.
Those recipes look so delicious!!! I wish I had those plates in front of me right now!!😋🌿🌱
You are awesome - thank you so much for this video. I was one of those who tried tempeh by just throwing it into a stir-fry, and... wow. I decided I didn’t like it. I was not aware that you really need to prepare it properly.
I also appreciate this info because I’m trying to minimize my use of pre-flavored meat analogues, to control my sodium intake.
PS Worcestershire is pronounced “WUH-ster-sheer.” 😉
I actually enjoy the taste of tempeh, but getting new ideas to add variety is great.
For the marinade, I imagine using a tomato coulee with spices, instead of BBQ sauce,
could work too.
Omg. I was just looking for some tempeh recipes. Thank you. Love them all.
Happy to provide!
I had bought tempeh bacon and it was sooooo good. I usually have a tofu scramble or tofu so I'm looking forward to the tempeh.
I haven’t been brave enough to try tempeh yet. Thank you for this video. I may try making the bacon first.
Thank you for these ideas! Determined to start going plant-based this month, and I know that appetizing recipes like this will really help.
Way to go! Worth a try for sure. There are so many amazing foods to eat. It will open up so many different flavours and options it’s really not limiting at all! If you need inspiration there’s lots of videos on my channel!
I've only had tempeh once. I thought it was weird but after seeing this video, I'm going to give it another try.
awesome video, can't wait to try them all, they look delicious!

Derek my man! Amazing video again. I loved how you pronounced the Worcestershire sauce. Keep the videos coming bud. Have a good week ahead!
Thanks man! I pronounce ever letter, no shortcuts here! ;)
@@Simnettnutrition this was biggest shock when I moved to England. They pronounce it Woostershire sauce. When I first heard it, I was like “what?” If that is what is suppose to be one needs to rethink the spelling!
Mmmmhmmmm. Looks good. Gotta try it out. Just ate big bowl of lentils black beans and big salad with kale spinach bell pepper mushrooms onions cucumber. Mmmmm. Mayb for dinner.
That sounds really good!
@@Simnettnutrition Shirley was now I'm riding on a bunch of different Trails downtown Boise On my bicycle Before work on Monday. Take care Derek stay healthy you know the rules....
I have some tempeh in my fridge that I didn't like the taste of, so this is very helpful! Hoping I like it better prepared in one of these ways. :) Thanks!

Yummy Tempeh!!, Love the tempeh bacon, will have to try the sausage crumble soon.
Love tempeh! This all looks great!
The voiceover in recent videos is sooo soft and nice! Podcast-ready I would say😎 greetings!
Love it! Can’t wait to try these recipes. What about the crumbles in sloppy joes? Thanks for sharing!
I make my own non- soy tempeh and this gives me lots of ideas. I really like your bacon version snd made it while watching your video.
I guess it will be s snack as it’s almost gone while writing my comment!
Made the bacon recipe with my black bean and rice tempeh
Been vegan 7 yrs and currently bored senseless with my cooking. Thanks for the new ideas. Tried the bbq dish tonight. Rock solid.
Just bought some tempeh. Watching several videos. I think I will try a tempeh dog, slicing it thicker so as to put it in a hot dog bun and then baking it off with bbq sauce as you did. When done, put it in lightly toasted bun and topped with sauerkraut. I am going to steam/simmer it first though as I remember when I had it years ago the bitterness was a turn off. But I wasn't plant based then. Thanks for the inspiration.
