It's so nice to hear someone talk about the corruption in the banana industry. No one ever talks about the lack of human ethics and bananas. Thanks for the helpful hints, Derek!
No problem Bella, I eat a lot of bananas so its my duty to at least be aware of the issues around them and support better practices, etc.
Why is this the 1st time I've heard about the banana industry? Between us we eat 5-6 a day! Thank you for always offering information about ongoing issues within the food industry. Now looking for both documentaries and I will be more mindful of which bananas we are purchasing!
This was a shock to me; but I live in Australia and grew up as a kid in an area where there were so many bananas grown that they used to give away some in our local cornerstores when it got too much!! 10c a kilo and no one is buying them, that sort of thing 😉
@@Simnettnutrition You should read The Fish That Ate the Whale : The Life and Times of America's Banana King by Rich Cohen
@@CuratedMusic 👏👏👏 I had a guest recommend this book. Such a great book! It's crazy the amount of corruption in bananas, coffee & cocoa.
Calling tofu a blank canvas is such a positive perspective!
Yes but following that up with "sponge" not so much lol
What a great way to put it :P
@@Simnettnutrition So is tofu spongeworthy or not? (Seinfeld reference)
People think potatoes are unhealthy because they grow up eating them fried in oil, covered in cheese, sour cream, butter, salt, etc. With that said I do still love french fries...
Try oven-baked seasoned fries!
I mean, no one could have said it better😎
Potatoes are love💚
More for me, honestly! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼😂😂
I love them baked in the oven. With condiments they are very tasty
@@ir0n_bb170 It's the best thing ever!!!
How do you do it man? Even after all these years I can feel your passion for nutrition and whole foods, its always so genuine and always gets me excited to just munch on some kale leaves. Plants are plenty!
Thanks Will! I am just really passionate about helping others and love being in this role!
@@Simnettnutrition do the Canadian winters slow down your outdoor videos ? I’m here in Pennsylvania. I want to get into trail running in the spring.
@@Bert_Mar He's in Victoria BC so they're pretty mild :)
@@Simnettnutrition This is awesome! It gets me excited to go to the supermarket and try out new recipes!
Oats, tofu, potatoes, lentils, peanut butter - you could live off those for $10 a week. They're delicious. Super nutritious. Epic. Good work Derek! Great video as always.
Chickpeas too
$10? maybe in your country.. I said to my friend last week..supermarkets here are pushing budget friendly meals.for 2.50 a serve (that's not a meal; some are a small bowl of chickpea curry for instance, other supermarket had them at $5 each. the were with dead food in). it wouldn't be weird if I spent $100 for my own food.. and you mean subsist.. you will end up deficient on those foods, not to mention bored..
Feels good when you watch an 18 minute video and you literally agree with everything in it.
Bro, true.
Awesome Video! What info, I love you Derek. You are a joy to watch!!!
I was thinking the same thing and I’m not even a vegan - these are my staples too - except the kale. 😅
I LOVE that you bring the social issues of food systems into this. Thank you for reminding people to source ethically!
Yes it’s something we can all do, even on a budget.
Plants are so cool 😎
They really are!
So are you, Natalie! Because you said so.
@@CompostWatcher Aw thank you!!
Omg the end of the kale part 😂
I forgot about that video lol
Haha, you watched this on your walk?!?! I miss you. oxox. Haha, yah the ol' drunk kale remedy. I had to put that in when I saw it.
You guys are just too freakin cute! ❤
Hi Crystal!!
Absolute favorite vegan couple on youtube. Sending you two so much love!
PRO TIP:
frozen peas are great in SMOOTHIES- they make it creamy 🤩
raw peas tastes like vomit..
Ohh I love those in my nice cream 😍 ever tried this?
yes, beans work too!
I have to try it! Each week I freeze white beans in small portions and throw them in my smoothies. Can't taste them and it ramps up nutrition and creaminess!!
Tofu + peas + frozen banana + lemon into blender = high protein lemon pay smoothie
Thanks for the tip on organic lentils. I had no idea..
I know it sucks, but luckily they are still fairly cheap. You are welcome.
I think peas are harvested that was too - I saw it with my own eyes at a local farm - so sad that they feel the need to do that.
10/10, love the casual debunking and information provided on environmental impact and nutrition, really good.
Gotta keep it real. Thank you thank you!!! 10/10! Wow. :D
This is such an important video!
If I had a dollar every time someone said they choose the less healthy item out of cost or convenience I’d be rich. Food can be delicious, nutritious AND affordable.
It’s official. As a new, aspiring vegan (about 95% plant-based currently), and fitness-oriented person, this is among my top favorite CZcams channels. You have such a great communication style. 💕
Don't apologize for talking too much - you are a delight. Thanks for the reminders about all the reasons these foods are great!
Your channel has helped so much with my plant based eating change, these videos are brilliant. Thank you so much for continuing the amazing content!
That is my whole goal! Thanks for letting me know, it helps keep me motivated and fired up!
Yes! Team potato here. I've lost 70+ pounds (and still losing) having the humble potato at the centre of my plate. I'm a starchivore for life.
Love this. Thanks for sharing!
Me too. I lost a hundred pounds eating potatoes
Guys please tell me how much potatoes for each meal. I'm very obese/ muscular and have been wfpb for only 10 days. I'm trying hard but not losing weight yet. I'm also healing an Achilles tenonopathy situation and working out every day. Please hook me up for more info! I'm obsessed with my recent awakening!❤️ Great job guys. Love you all!
@@friedsam29 Hi James. Welcome to WFPB living! I've lost another 12 pounds since writing my initial comment 5 months ago and began losing weight almost a year ago. Be patient and kind with yourself as you move thru your own weight loss journey; it's not a quick fix but a complete lifestyle reboot. I pretty much eat a hybrid of Dr McDougall's and Dr. Esselstyn's protocols. I eat zero processed foods, so no flours, salt, oil, sugar, and alcohol. Most of my meals are built around potatoes or sweet potatoes with my plate being 50% starch (potato, beans, grains) and 50% non-starchy veg. I eat until I'm satiated and this was a feeling that I needed to rediscover. I have found creating a community of others who are also WFPB to be the most supportive. Derek's channel and the folks in the comments are one of the pieces of my community. All the best, James.
@@apple369 thank you!
Wuut, I didn't know peas had more protein than black beans! Always learn so much from your videos :) Loved this! I would say I can't live without lentils, love some comforting, indian dal :)
I can’t get over him holding that metal bowl full of frozen food & not flinching.
HAha, it was pretty icy!
First time commenting. Been watching you for the last 3 years or so. Been mostly plant based as long. Doing my part for the algorithm!
Nice to see you Steve. Thanks man, I appreciate it. Wow, 3 years, thank you so much man, that means so much to me.
Frozen peas yes so underrated! The sweet baby peas kind are amazing with lentils
One of my MUST HAVES is avocado!🥑 I am so surprised you didn't have that on your list! I probably have it for breakfast, lunch and dinner!😆 They also have more potassium than a banana.
Yes! I’d swap the kale for the avocado!
My list is similar - I definitely couldn't live without broccoli.
Oh wow, my GF & I joke about how much I love broccoli. "There's no such thing as too much broccoli," I always say.
Broccoli is the best thing ever.
Ikr I don’t know why people hate it so much :(
@@savannahkrupa4424 because they grew up eating soggy mushy broccoli. i was like that with cauliflower now i love baked cauliflower!
I just watched Bananaland documentary and I am from Ecuador. Here it is typicall fruit.
I have to say, you and Crystal are among my top favorite CZcamsers ! Y’all are always so positive and helpful 😊🔥❤️💪
Thank you so much!!
Great list. Thank you! Just a little addition to oats, they are actually incredibly nutritious, they contain manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, folate, B vitamins, decent amount of protein. Thank you for emphasizing their high fiber and cholesterol lowering quality. I agree that adding berries to oats make them of the chart healthy. I tell all my patients to eat oats for breakfast.
Yes to all 10 of these!! 🙌🏻 I would put spinach instead of kale on my list but that's only because I find it way more versatile in every meal. 🌿❤ Big up the greens!
Nope. Spinach is too high in oxalates. Kidney stones are a genuine risk from eating a lot of spinach. Kale is the way to go.
I'm so surprised dates were not on this list 😂😂😂
They could have been, but what would you take off my list and replace with dates? Its so hard!
@@Simnettnutrition Easy! Potatoes 😅
I almost never use them.. Dates are much useful :P
Noooo way!! Potatoes are the bests
@@lilladosay7707 I prefer sweet potatoes :) But if I will have to choose, its definitely dates rather than sweet potatoes.
i barely use dates and tofu too :D last time i ate tofu was like... three years ago? but the rest of the list is must haves :)
I love the cooking videos! I certainly can't live without Derek's famous tahini sauce! It's the best thing ever 😍
Nice! Glad to hear. Thanks for watching.
After boil em, mash em ALWAYS comes: stick em in a stew!
I was so disappointed when he said steam them instead of stick em in a stew 🤣
@@victoriag332 Oh yeah that's a great way to use them too! I can't remember everything!
@@Simnettnutrition I actually almost always eat my potatoes steamed but it would have been the perfect lord of the rings reference 😎
This comment is tragically under appreciated
I was just going to write that too 😂
Your. Videos have 95% converted me. Tried seaweed flakes 1st time..wow who woukd have known.
Another hack to make your bananas ripen faster is to put them next to some apples. Apples emit a gas that causes fruit to ripen faster, especially if you put the apple and bananas together in a sealed bag, or poke a hole in the apple. Hence the reasoning behind the saying “one bad apple ruins the whole bunch.” 🍎
This also works for ripening avocados. 🥑
Also, i love oatmeal and chickpeas. They both have that flavor that is paradoxically sweet and savory at the same time. They are a match made in heaven i swear. 😋
PLEASE make one meal using all these 10 foods. Firstly it would be rather funny, but also I can't wait to see you smash it :)
Another excellent video! My list: beans, frozen berries, oats, potatoes and bell peppers. By the way, I'm so thankful for your video today: it finally gave my three year old son a reason to sit still for a few minutes 🙂
Yes, bell peppers were definitely a consideration for the list. On another day they would probably make the list. ;) Glad to hear about your son. Haha, glad I am entertaining enough for the little one. Haha, 3 year old learning about soy usage around the world. Gotta teach em young!
My list is very similar
About berries, I pick them in season and I freeze them to use for the rest of the year! Smoothies, homemade jam, pies, muffins, etc.!
The whole banana in oatmeal thing is a total game changer.
Love the potato moment! 😆 Great list, Derek. 👍
They went flying! Haha. Thank you.
Definitely did NOT talk to much. So much wonderful information to pass along. Sure appreciate your videos! Really well done. Love your recipe videos! Thx for creating them and encouraging us to eat healthfully.
Thank you so much Brenda!
Listening to you is a real mood lifter! Thank you. Feeling much more motivated to try 100% plant diet 👍
Love all 10 of your “what you can’t live without list”.
FINALLY a vegan youtuber who doesnt pretend almond butter is tastier than peanut butter
😂 same with almond milk like why?? Maybe I’m missing something..?
Or that kale is delicious. Let's get real.
Nani !
I kind of like almond butter... >.> Never was a big peanut butter guy though. I only like it in smoothies or in a PBJ.
But it is tastier!!!!
I couldn’t live without dates and fresh organic blueberries! I have to eat them everyday!:)
Fair trade bananas, organic tofu, frozen berries, kale, frozen peas, protein pasta, green and red lentils, peanut butter, tahini, potatoes, rolled oats. Great stock items for home cooking. I would add a variety of nuts, seeds and ground flax seed.
would love to see your falafel recipe. 💪🏼💚
Loved that you included the info about glyphosate and the issues around bananas! Oats are definitely a staple for me as well. 😊
Love that you focus on normal, affordable plant foods
Potatoes are on the top of the satiety scale, amazing food.
Great list! I agree with it all. Here in Florida I'd say Collards are the best green that's always in season and cheap instead of kale, though. But we also often have great deals on kale. Plus, collards are cruciferous so it has the sulfur compounds that Dr Gregor suggests eating every day.
We say pawstah. I've never heard anyone say it the way y'all do lol
This guy says it very interesting for sure!!!🤣
Debbie Tampa: I've had very little success cooking collards...tough and tasteless when I'm done. What is the trick?
I like your genuineness and simplicity. Also, you guys make a really cute couple . Stay healthy!
Thank you!
Derek, you're the reason people think I really know my stuff when it comes to the nutrition world. And in a way, I guess I do... and the majority of that has just come from watching your videos these past few years. Really appreciate all that you do, I don't know where I would be on my vegan journey without you!💪🙌
Love your emphasis on simple whole foods.
I’m learning so much nutritional information and useful cooking tips/hacks from you. Thanks for sharing all your wisdom! You are a very inspirational speaker and I look forward to watching more!
I love all of these foods! I made kale chips yesterday. OMG! They are soooo good they made me dance. You are really a vegan when kale chips make you dance. 😊
So happy to have found you! Great info!!!!!🙌🏼🙌🏼❤️
I love the happiness you have around food
"You can boil them, mash them"
Me: Stick them in a stew?
Great video! Pls do a piece on natural protein powders?!
😂😂😂 YES!!
Yes, somebody said it 😂 LOTR fan spotted
Immediately where my mind went
Samwise said it best. Tatters.
I’m so sad with the potatoes you didn’t go lord of the rings on us :p “boil em, mash em, stick em in a stew!”
Great list!! Thanks for the content as always :)
I agree with your entire list. On point for sure! I appreciate you leaving in your goofy moments, it really is nice touch that makes your already enjoyable videos that much more fun to watch. 🌱💪
Love this video ! Love to hear you talk about the nutrition in certain foods ! Such good info
Loved this video! Just a random idea for you to try if you like Zucchini Bread... Add a medium finely chopped zucchini to your oatmeal! You get tons of great fiber, you sneak in a serving of veg, and you can’t taste it! It’s so delicious!! It’s been really helping me not feel “heavy” after eating oatmeal, and honestly... it’s just digesting better 😂 but really, try it!
I love learning about food information here even though I’m not vegan. 💯
Go vegan
@@mike-wi8wm should be his choice. It comes when one is ready
Thank you to my algorithm that bought me to your channel!!! Love all your tips 🙌🏽
Loved this "back to the basics" video. This is the kind of stuff we newbies to WFPB eating need. Thanks!
Amazing video love this kind of information! You have such an incredible channel. It's been so helpful in my health journey and also very entertaining as well.
Thank you so much, that means a lot to me. I am so happy I can help!
You reminded me to eat toast with peanut butter (or sunflower butter), with bananas & I top it with a bit of honey.
Kale should be organic it’s extremely high in pesticide residue. I don’t think you mentioned that. Great video!
New favourite channel ! So wholesome and helpful . Thank you !
Thanks for this list!!
Love these types of videos
Thank you! I aim to please.
We have almost the same list... And I love versatile shopping. I would add onion powder and Garlic powder or red onions and whole garlic. Love your Videos. I always forward them to family and friends interested in vegan lifestyle..
thank you for all the ideas will use them
This is the second video I have seen of yours. I'm writing up a cookbook and you have a lot of great info! You're also really great at explaining everything as well. Thanks!
So glad potatoes made the list! Great video, Derek
Crystal said they had to be on there! Thank you. :D
Do you ever eat savoury oats? I definitely associate oats as being either sweet or slightly plain with cinnamon. But some people eat them with savoury ingredients and flavours.
Always so inspiring! Thank You!!
I’m not vegan but i appreciate how you know how bananas and soy and other foods can be unsustainable and you don’t ignore it like most of the vegans. 🙌🏻
I tend to put frozen peas in my smoothies- just because it’s easy. I will check out kale though, as I’ve never blended that.
I eat “groats” now instead of oats. Have you tried them. They are delicious 😋
I had stopped the frozen smoothies over the winter 🥶 as it’s cold in 🇬🇧, however more recently I’ve thought “screw it” and I keep a fleece on while I eat it 😂
I missed Derek talking facts about foods and the nutrition contents of them.
Great video!!

Hey Man - You’ve been an amazing resource starting out as a vegan and a boatload of entertainment during these crazy times. Thank you SO much for doing all this and putting the time in!
Thank you for this list.
I found you looking for calisthenics routines. And thnx to you I'm starting my transition to veganisim. : )
For those who it may interest, raisins are an incredibly calorie dense fruit also, with a good iron content. You can eat a pound or so of raisins, actually maybe even less, and it is 1400 calories or so. Next time you're in the store check the raisin box and be amazed.
Raisins are healthy to eat after being soaked
@@imabina7425 do you think they are not healthy when dried? I could maybe see a little less healthy, but you think unhealthy?
It’s less stress on the digestive system when they are soaked. Roasted nuts are not healthy either
@@imabina7425 ah ok yeah I get what you are saying. I think the dried raisins are still healthy, just not as much as soaked. I do think there is something to water content as well.
I love your positivity with all this going on in the world. 🥰
You are one of the most simplified - yet informative people I have watched. And you keep it entertaining! :)
"In no order, number one: bananas"
Oh come on Derek, don't lie to us. We all know bananas are your number one 😂
Yeah, you said "In no particular order," but we all knew bananas would be 1st! LOL
This made me smile. Thank you for that.
Another fantastic video! Thanks, Derek!
LOTS of great information. I’m definitely saving this one.
Absolutely shocked that sweet potatoes didn't make the cut!
or beans/ chick peas
I kind of lump them into the potato category but wanted to talk more about potatoes because of the fear around them being a "white carb"
I love those too but could only pick 10 foods and wanted a variety lol
I cant make a decent tofu on the airfryer.i add soya sauce, maple syrup, olive oil and vinegar but it turns out like burned and also has a funny taste.how ling and also in what temperature do you air fry it?I much prefer temph but I cannot find it easily where I live it is unbelievable!!!!
I love your videos, Derek :) Thank you for putting in the work to make them! Also, the time stamps in the description are so great
Thank you for the nutrition info! Love your recipes!
*onion and garlic (powder) would like to know your location* 👀😂😂
😏
Watching this as I eat almond butter and hearing Derek call me wrong: . . . Oh well 💁🏽
Hahaha, it's good, and even better for you... but there's nothing like PB. ;)
#teampb
@@Simnettnutrition Oh I love them both.
#9 on your list really surprised me! Yesterday I learned that cauliflower has way more nutrient value than I knew. I guess I shouldn't be so quick to judge a food by its' color.
Excellent video! Such great information- thank you :)
Love your enthusiasm. Very inspiring. Uncomplicated, fabulous foods. Thanks.
"nut butter" *me giggling every time i hear it*
I am a chemist and this whole GMO-thing gets misunderstood so often which just freaks me out, here's the facts:
A plant, let's take corn, growing wildly may or may not contain certain compounds that cause allergies or do damage to you in general. The probability it doesn't (for any humanbeing consuming it like rare side effects on a drug) is very low.
If you wanna do GMO you gotta do a ton of research, toxilogy, in vitro and in vivo experiments and clinical trials that take ages, mostly over ten years and if it turns out to not do damage to anybody on a large scale you will eventually be allowed to grow it.
Given how many people on this earth are dying because they don't get enough food it is our moral and should be our legal obligation to not have a problem with GMO. After all, the probability that it does harm to you is lower than with "natural" plants.
@@amazingone1234 GMO and organic don't always go together and it's not true to believe that every non-organic food is too high in toxines. It often depends on how the food gets sprayed, also not every insecticide is toxic (or as toxic as others), sometimes (mostly) when people worry about toxines it is actually not even possible for your body to metabolise them in a harmful way or (more often, like with PTFE for example) the compound is too stable to even react with anything.
All I'm trying to say is: If it makes you worry less and you wanna be a 100% sure that nothing critical happens with your system due to pesticides, go buy organic. But to be honest: In most cases it makes sense to actually check on whether there's a reason to be worried (I'm not saying there never is).
Also, I was just talking about why it makes no sense to worry about GMO as GMO and not as potentially too high in pesticides, cause that's what most people don't even care about when it's about genetically modified stuff.
Hope my explanation was clear...
That was such an awesome, informative video! Thanks for providing all the info and details in the description. Really helps a lot!
I LOVE your videos. Just when I thought I was well-educated in nutrition, you teach me more! Thank you :)
You’re my new hero !I look up to you and every video!😊
