- The making of a papalaau pa'iai (Poi board) This video shows a slab of Mango wood to the finish product. Poiboard made durig a 2 day event, a total of 11 hours with hany hands invovled.

Slab started out as 6' 300 pounds of wood, and ended up being about 120pounds of finished product. Board used to preserve the art of Pa'i ai. a Pa'i ai hui will gather and use this community board to make pa'i ai for friends and family of Mauinui. - Jak na to + styl

The underside was kukui nut oil, the top side where Pa'i ai is pounded was left raw. But since, lightly rub down with Butchers block oil. This is safe for food. Use sparingly though. Good idea to light coat while is storage...

The slab of wood was it cut right away meaning still get plenty water inside or was it dried out for a few weeks even months? And once the shape of the board is pau did you rehydrate the wood if it was dried out?
A project with many hands involved in this 2 day event. From a raw stock of wood, to a finished working piece to make Pa'i ai for keeping the art of pa;i ai a routine in upcountry Maui.
