    Seriously, when you have Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Nylander and Reilly, if you can't beat "clogging the neutral zone" then maybe your team just isn't that good, after all.

      @matthewnoto9380 Před 2 lety +1

      No direct statement, just an implication/inference of an argument made by disappointed Canadian fans for two decades, now.
      If a Canadian team loses, and the other team is playing defensive hockey, then it is bad. If a Canadian team does it and wins, then it's just "good hockey" or "great discipline".
      If it happens to the Leafs, then it's just plain cosmically unfair, or if Montreal does it for two decades, then it's "classic strategy".
      How about playing a little chip and chase and winning some physical battles? Or, right -- 10-million-dollar-plus pretty boys don't do that.
      It would have been a critique is he expanded upon the remark; instead, he left a little hint and then let it hang in the air.

Of course he sounded peeved about how they played, he wanted the Leafs to win, but he also said this was the best game 7 the Leafs have played in recent memory. It isn't a Canadian thing, its a fan thing. Also they as a group talked about how Tampa (a la the winning LA Kings teams) grind down their opponents as well as score big goals... I'm really unclear on what you're mad at, it seems kind of like you just don't like Adam.

    • @matthewnoto9380
      @matthewnoto9380 Před 2 lety

      Not mad, JSK. The reaction is predictable, and for that reason, it's annoying. If the Leafs lose, it must be because there was something wrong with the game, or the other team, and not that they suck.
      We get the same thing down here in New York when the Yankees are on the receiving end. Past a certain point, the whining gets annoying. If it weren't for whining about the Leafs, TSN would have no reason to exist , either (yes, we get TSN down here).
      Adam doesn't have to elaborate: he just has to put the thought in everyone's head and they get what he means. Leafs fans, especially, are predisposed to think it, anyway.
      As for "best game 7 he's ever seen", well, he's a young man and hasn't seen too many of them, I reckon. I'm guessing he forgot when Boston came back from a 4-goal deficit in Game 7 to beat the Leafs, too, and that was only a few years ago.
      That was a great game, as well.

In 19 they knocked off first place Flames. Really just in the 2020 bubble and last year against really good Vegas team are situations where Avs didn’t meet expectations. Hardly a long history of playoff disappointments. Adam also said in a prior podcast that Carolina has had difficulty getting out of the second round. As a Colorado fan,who was pulling hard for you guys...I only hope we don't become the Leafs of the 2nd round here soon. If we don't beat St Louis, that's basically what we are. I initially picked TB in 7 in my bracket. But after game 6,I changed my mind...I really thought TB was slightly better,& would win game 7. But the hockey gods can be so cruel.
    But in the end,a few things that crossed my mind...I think actually turned out to be true. After game 6,you guys were so happy,& encouraged,cuz Vasilevsky had given up at least 3 goals in every game. You guys took that as a positive sign,but it was the 1 thing that gave me pause. Cuz I don't care how great of a season Szerkin had,I maintained all along that Vasilevsky is the greatest goalie on earth,& it's not really close til somebody does some serious things, especially in the playoffs. I looked at it like,the best goalie on earth could be due to dominate game 7,& as usual-it happened. Dude has given up 1 goal,the last 5 or 6 chances he's had to eliminate an opponent.
    Also,as much as the Leafs defense has improved...they still aren't quite good enough. Steve sang their praises all season,but all along I thought they merely improved from not good a few years ago,to basically average today. When I look at my Avs blueline,or TBs...Toronto has neither the star power up top,(Avs have 2 guys who are top 5-10 dmen,Makar,& Toewes)but maybe more importantly-the elite defenses are just far deeper. If I was Toronto,I would NOT overreact,& start firing the gm,or coach...or just trading people for change sake. But if I could trade Nylander for a top 4 dman,I'd certainly consider it. Dmen are more valuable obviously than a winger,so ya probably couldn't trade him straight up for somebody worth it,but if you packaged him...you have a glut of offensive forwards,but not quite enough on the back end. I think that will the difference between my Avs,& St Louis. Most of the matchups on paper are close,but the 1 major advantage either team has,is the Avs blueline is just so much better,& deeper than St Louis also. If healthy the Blues backend is merely average. But they aren't even healthy-doesnt sound like Krug is gonna be back anytime soon.
    But I really felt for you guys,cuz this just wasn't anything remotely the same as choking to Montreal,or Columbus...teams you were way better than. And as Adam said,if you wanna win in the playoffs,you must succeed at the format in place. But let's be honest,the NHL playoff setup is completely ridiculous...the same setup that forced Colorado,& Vegas to play last year in the 2nd round,after TYING FOR THE PRESIDENTS TROPHY! And the 2nd problem is you just happened to play in the deepest conference I've ever seen 1 through 8,since I started closely following the NHL in 1995. And amazingly enough,your particular division is even tougher than the conference as a whole. What really happened in the end,is 2 top 5 teams had to play 1st round,& while I'd say you slightly outplayed TB over the course of the series,you lost by 1 goal in a coin flip series, somebody had to lose. I said beforehand, the winner of Toronto-TB would play my Avs in the Finals...where I have TB 3 peating by beating my Avs. But I really was pulling hard for you guys.
    But while I agree that NHL officiating is not good...that has almost nothing to do with why the NHL isn't on the same level as the NFL,or NBA. There are several reasons why it's not near as popular in America,but officiating is not 1 of them, despite what Steve said. You guys live in a hockey crazed city,& country...where officiating could be what has turned off the few people who gave up hockey. But that's largely not true in America. How do I know this,cuz NFL officiating is very similar to the NHL. It's just not very good on balance,or very consistent in either sport. But it's also similar in that basically every team gets screwed...you can't determine beforehand,or by market size who will get shafted. But NBA officiating is far worse than either sport. Biggest differences is NBA refs have far more direct impact on the result of the game,just by the nature of the sports. And while I don't believe these games are fixed or anything like that...there should be no doubt the best players,& marque teams get every benefit of doubt from NBA refs. Go watch the 4th qtr of Lakers-Kings,WCFs,game 6 in 2003,for the most egregious example. But all ya have to do is watch how somebody like Giannis is officiated...no other player gets the same calls. NBA just gives most benefits of doubt to guys,& teams like that...& it affects the popularity of the sport in America very little.
    Sometimes in hockey,certain calls directly impact the outcome,the Tavares disallowed goal in game 7 being a perfect example. But on balance,refs in hockey have nowhere near the impact on the outcome,that basketball refs have. We often see games where 1 team gets way more PPs,but nobody scores on any of them. Obviously,that still can indirectly impact the outcome,if you are spending a bunch of time shorthanded. But in basketball,if I give you 50 free throws,& your opponent 20...plus I foul out his 2 best players,or merely get them into early foul trouble,that will greatly impact the game every single time. Because we are intense fans,who closely follow our teams,we realize how inconsistent NHL officiating is,& it drives us nuts. But casual fans aren't not watching hockey cuz of it. It's harder anyways for a casual fan to spot a bad call in hockey oftentimes,than it is in basketball. And if bad officiating that costs teams games, really impacted the masses from watching or caring...the NBA,& NFL to a lesser degree...would be cratering in popularity. But it's just something we all have to live with,cuz these leagues clearly don't care,or even want it this way. And Steve...when have you,& Adam ever NOT THOUGHT the Oilers are underated? You've been largely a much bigger Edmonton apologist than Toronto. And usually your logic boiled down to "McDavid,& Drasaitil get all the credit,& zero blame." Edmonton deserves credit-the pressure is now off. They don't have to beat Calgary. But really all they've done is best a pedestrian LA in 7,that they are way more talented than. Quick wasn't even a good goalie this season. Had they lost,that'd be the worst gag in McDavid career,(not him personally,he was great...but as a team)-other than losing in the bubble 3-1,to a terrible Chicago team.

None of the remaining 3 teams in the East would have been able to get by the Leafs in my opinion, meaning a possible final against Colorado. That would have been a tougher hurdle to get by as opposed to Florida, Rangers or Carolina. Getting as far as the finals means a Cup win, the emotion and drama getting there would have meant a parade in downtown Toronto for sure long weekend in July. Knowing that has to sting, HARD.

    Did they play close? Yes. Did they play hard? Yes. That doesn’t change anything when you still lose. And that loss is the 5th in a row in sudden death elimination (counting the play in round in 2020).
    The entire argument last year was “we need results”. Well the result is still the same guys, but the argument now is “oh they played hard”.
