  • We try where we can to bring you better footage than is available elsewhere and these extended hi-lights is a great example.
An iconic game when a Watford legend became back page news for the first time. Having only recently broken into the starting line up, Luther Blissett made Graham Taylors first words to him prophetic "Luther Blissett - well with a name like that you'd better become a star!"
Luther went on to appear more times and score more goals for Watford than any other player. Whilst records are there to be broken, his place in the Watford pantheon is cemented beyond any doubt.
Andy Rankin also stars with the legendary save at the end - its worth waiting for.
Finally the best words come from wonderful commentator Barry Davies
"One can understand the reason why there are such high hopes at Vicarage Road for the future of Watford Football Club, this is not just a team raising themselves for a cup tie this is a team playing to the qualities that they have" and that was when it was 1-1!

I had a ticket for this match and a place on a ride up to Manchester. However, luck would have it that I also had a ticket to see Buzzcocks play in my home town on the same night! No guessing which I chose. Got back home in time to see the last 20 seconds on Sportsnight. Up until now I hadn't seen the rest of the highlights. Thanks for posting.

The greatest myth of all time, is the Watford long ball game. Its nowhere to be seen in this game, and some of the football played by them here is quite beautiful.

Went up on the football special train, leaving Manchester the stones and bricks started to come through the windows bad days of football hooliganism.
My best game of following Watford in 60 years, followed by Southampton league cup at home.
Following any team there are highs and lows, Northwich Victoria away2 1 up only to lose 3-2, and the 84 cup final after a battling season from being bottom of the first division in late September to mid table at the end of the season and first cup final appearance we froze.
As the De ream song says ‘ things can only get better’

Your mum wins - mine didn't wake me up! I had to come down in the morning to find out over breakfast and then wait for Nationwide to see the goals (Nationwide! That's one for the teenagers!)

Farewell Andy. Everto fan. Remember him savings decisive penalty in European cup tie shoot out v borrusia munchen gladbach in 1970. Also remember him arguably costing us FA cup semi v Liverpool in 1971. Ah the ups and downs of football. Would far rather have beaten Liverpool.

Yes Pete, he sneaked up the scoring charts that season. As Ross Jenkins was the leading scorer in all the U.K., Luther sneaked in unnoticed into second place.
After the 2nd half brace against Newcastle - GT said he was not an automatic choice even though he “does this al, the time” or similar. After the Old Trafford game he was indeed an automatic choice. On to the League Cup semi final that season as well.
A Man U colleague I saw on a course told me he was at this game and he was convinced Luther’s second goal would soon cancelled out, but Watford and Andy Rankin made sure it wouldn’t happen.

Glad Blissett scored in particular, as he was getting booed by the presumably racist Utd fans.

Yes it is a recurring theme looking back at these videos that Luther received the most horrific treatment from opposition supporters when we were away - the fact that he turned this into extra motivation to play well and score goals as the best way to get back at them is an enormous testament to him.
