- Our second game v Arsenal and back to Highbury for the quarter final of the FA Cup. This is towards the end of the GT's first era and whilst some faces have changed - the quality is still there! It's hard to work out why a few months later Dave Bassett felt the need to break up this squad so drastically.
Another master class in wing play from Barnes and this time from David Bardsley on the opposite flank.

Great memories. I had moved away from Hertfordshire and was living in Capel, Surrey, listening to the commentary on Radio 2. What a game :)
many good memories of seeing Watford beat Arsenal at Highbury , I think I witnessed 3 wins during the 80's
Was at the game and remember Dave Bardsley ripping Kenny Sansom a new one all day. Great days!
Steve Williams at Southampton was asked to entertain some kids in wheelchairs on the old Dell pitch. Steve didn’t see it was their day out and played like a pro and had a shot at goal from 25 yards out. Turned away expecting his shot to go in to hear the sound of a wheelchair rolling over.
A kid decided to use the strength in his upper body to dive out of his wheelchair and push Steve’s shot round the post. Williams was shocked he couldn’t score against a kid in a wheelchair.
What a nasty character he was
Arsenal spent the whole second half trying for a penalty but to no avail. Amazingly we played them again the following Saturday. Low and behold they get their penalty. They missed it! Oh and just how good was David Bardsley that day?
Bardsley was such a good player - Bassett's principal crimes was letting him get away!

I remember watching the game on MOTD with Jimmy Hill using Pontiff infallibility to decide Sims did not foul Quinn, hence Luther’s 2nd goal stood.
Not being blessed with Jimmy’s ordained status the Ref had to consult his Lino. MOTD showed a Gooner supporter behind the Lino shouting out “it’s a foul”. Why we ever bother with VAR when we can have someone in the crowd so willing to help out the officials.
Rarely do the Refs do TV interviews - “What persuaded you that Sims fouled Quinn in the area and give Arsenal a penalty and disallow Watford’s third goal?” Ref “Some block shouting out in the crowd of course”. (5 mins 21 secs.)

I was never a particularly vocal supporter but this was the only match that I actually lost my voice. Arsenal only had themselves to blame as they all stopped playing after the lino’s flag without waiting for the ref’s whistle. BTW, at the earlier league game, I was stood near the corner flag and clearly heard Coton berating the linesman. All I can say is he well and truly deserved his red card. 🤬 Callaghan nearly saved the penalty but sadly his gloves were too big and the ball slipped through his fingers. 😮
