    As a plumber who works for a company and does side work. I along with my company are not a fan of a hourly rate. Because its a disadvantage to plumbers who are quick and efficient with their work. Why should I only get paid for 30 minutes of work for something that would've taken you a whole day to figure out along with 10 trips to homedepot and still probably done wrong or hacked. People don't realize your not just paying for material your also paying for the job to get done properly and efficiently. That's why I like set prices for certain jobs. your crazy if you think I'm leaving a house with $60 just because I was able to install your toilet in 30 minutes. No your paying for my skill and labor not my time.

    Why would I take my mobile shop out to a customer’s home to investigate an issue for free and then potentially have them say “oh, my brother/cousin/friend could do that for me! Bye!” I am paying for a vehicle, and all it expenses, labor and the payroll taxes and such. If get out there and there are multiple issues and I give them several options and they choose a better option I might apply my dispatch fee to the job, but to expect me to come out at no charge is a bit ridiculous.

    These prices dont make sense. Especially the water heater costs. Dont pay attention to this video because you will be really upset to find out what US plumbers really charge once we get to your house and after a trip fee. Oh and by the way I've invested thousands of hours and thousands of dollars in my trade so why cant I make what a person makes after 4 years of college. Also I have gone to college and also have a buddy who graduated college and is a master plumber. We dont overcharge or rip people off this is just the cost to stay in business. nah the water heater part was spot on. a normal 3 bed 2bath home 1600sq ft can run off a 40gallon water heater. those sell for around 350-500 depending on the life of the warranty. if its in a normal easy access spot like the garage and there's not boxes and crap all over the place then you will pay about 250 for the swap. if you need new flex lines and a ball valve add about 100 bucks more 40 50 gallon water heater gas or electric should never cost over 1000 to have a new one installed. unless I have to strap it to my back and carry it up a tree or something lol

    I've never paid attention to what other plumbers charge. When I started Plumb Smart, Inc. 15 years ago, I read in a business book to never do that. I calculate all my overhead including wages, then what I want to make as an owner, and profit, and that's how I determine what I charge. I fit on the high end of your average cost bell curve. I do know for a fact that if I only charged an average of $95/job (your low end) I would be out of business and there would still be those who complain that's too much.

      That's interesting. Yea, these are just average lows and highs, they're not true across the board. Cost of supplies and operation are definitely the biggest factors for price. cost to run a gas line $500? yeah to dig the ditch only maybe. $1200 is a good starting price for a bbq or fire pit line 0-60 ft. a pool heater gas line is big usually 1 1/2-2inch so about double the price can get way expensive depending on how hard it is to route the line. if the pool equipment is on the opposite side of the house then you better really want to use your pool in the winter because that might cost up or even over 5k for just the gas line alone. last piece of advice, do not ever use metal pipe under ground for gas pipe unless it is ran thru a pvc or abs sleeve that has been pressure tested and vented. the scotch coated pipes that are usually green or brown I will not even install that stuff no way no how. had a customer put close to. 100k. in his back yard. not even a year later the fire feature in the center was not getting gas to it. the contractor used coated metal pipe and like always where the pipes threaded at got rusted and rotted right thru it. just use the yellow plastic pipe called PE pipe always under ground. if you hire someone to run a gas line underground and he breaks out metal pipe and a threader then send him packing haha

    Do you own a plumbing business? I own 3. Do you even have a clue how you would determine your price structure? Keep in mind what a plumbing or HVAC company expenses are....the vehicle, inventory, tools, fuel, wages, uniforms, rent, utilities, office staff salary, vehicle maintenance, medical insurance, liability insurance, vehicle insurance, bank charges, finance charges, loss of income due to customers not paying, education, continued training....just to name a few. You will never cover all your expenses at $40 or $95 an hour. If you don't know your cost of doing business, you will continually struggle or fail as a contractor. Keep in mind these technicians and plumbers work in extreme heat, extreme cold, work on gas lines, high voltage electrical components, work in trenches and sewer lines that puts them at risk of diseases, heat exhaustion, frost bite, electrocution, explosions and other situations that most people can't do. There is a value to what they do and there is a huge expense to operate a plumbing & HVAC business.

Customers do have choices, do they want the pinto or the Ferrari for their plumber? You get what you pay for. I am also not in a rush when i work. I look for more problems while i am there for the call. I have many days where i only stay at one place the whole day. My advice to other plumbers stay away from tight wods, penny pinchers, lawyers, and Karens. Look for customers that have the bankroll.

    This is nowhere near accurate. Our company charges $95 just to come out and inspect the situation it's called a service call fee. For example let's say customer needs a water heater replaced almost all the time you need two people to replace a water heater. Depending on the location of the water heater and the access to pull it out and and replace a new one. You have to drain the water heater almost completely and if it doesn't then we'll it's going to suck. Especially if it's down stairs leaking out the bottom and they have carpet everywhere. Plus parts for the water heater sometimes you to do some repiping because the old water is smaller or taller or wider . Or a 40 gallon but no store has a 40 gallon so you have to buy a 50 ect... we install a water heater for $1700 that pays for the service call your two employees parts and the new water heater 👌

    Some plumbers think that they are entitled to charge like a person with a 4 year or more of college. Electricistas do not charge like plumbers do.
    It should be a law that regulates their fee according to the job.
    Some plumbers do not like to get city permits, One told me that a job with permit costs $1000.00 more, I had 3 different estimates and there was a huge different in prices.
    English is not my primary language sorry for the grammar. I’m just expressing my opinion.

    • @mike617
      @mike617 Před 3 lety +7

      So a plumber who had to get 5 years of work experience, and 5 years of school, is not entitled to charge like a person with a college degree? Why do you say that? I would say that the average degree that your talking about is someone who ends up in an office working at a desk making great money doing a job that is only mentally demanding, while the plumber is out there doing a job that is both mentally and physically demanding. Most plumbers end up with terrible knees, working with gas (if done improperly we all know what can happen), carbon monoxide, ext. So I don’t see why it is that you think someone in a trade mike that does not deserve to make a decent wage. You can find a cheaper plumber, they are out there. But after you pay that cheap guy to do a piss poor installation, you will only end up paying the right guy to now come in and make it right. Plumbing tools are expensive, stock is expensive, overhead is expensive. Electricians can walk in with pliers, screw driver and a hole Hog and do about anything, plumbers have to lug in 20 tools for one small job...there are tons of factors to the price difference, you cannot simply compare to different trades and expect the pay to be the same
