Hi Nicolas! "Different" was commissioned for the opening theme song for the third season of the anime "Log Horizon". Fun fact, the b-side of the "Different" single is the instrumental "Don't be Long" (which is awesome). "Don't be Long" was written by Kanami as a training song for Miku to practice the diminished chords she would need for "Different". Whe you consider the amount of changes to the melody and tempo, they are all knitted together with amazing transitions, bridges, and fills etc. I've had 55 years of playing and listening to music by really great bands of all genre's but I have not heard anyone else do this so clean and effortless as they do. My pleasure at the moment is Jazz/Rock fusion from the early 1970s, so this song is bread and butter to me.
I remember hating this song when it first came out because it was so chaotic, being a far cry from their good ole Rock sound. I thought, it's Band-Maid it has to be good so I forced myself to listen to it over and over and finally the light went on and now it's slowed down and less chaotic and just a masterpiece when broken down........as all Band-Maid songs are.
About the maid outfits, Nicolas, or "the gimmick" as some have called it. Miku, and later the whole band, wanted to show that cute "Kawaii" girls (dressed as maids in high heels while having fun and smiling without even breaking a sweat) could rock as hard as any guy band (sweating all over their so called, hip street / grunge clothes and making it look like what they're doing -- their "art" -- is so painful and hard)... and by showing that contrast (they call it the "Gap"), it would generate interest, which it so successfully has done! The Gap is all about women empowerment. Now they show up as Maids for all band business and interviews, etc. and have created a long-lasting, unmistakable, visual band brand. Very cleaver, Miku. Your diabolical plan for world domination is working all too well. Of course, none of this would work if their music and stage performance wasn't at such a remarkably high level. They are considered by many as the best hard rock band in the world - maid outfits and all!
