  • I explain the math you need to calculate what size timber is required to make an End Grain Chopping Board, and tell you some of the popular sizes that we sell on our website.
    The Math.
Length of board (planed after first glue up) div / Total cut per row (inc allowance) = No of Pieces.
No of Pieces x height of board (planed after first glue up) = length of finished board.
Popular Board Sizes (in order of popularity)
All sizes below are based on a blade kerf of 3mm
    Finished Board Size 400mm x 300mm x 40mm
Rough Sawn Timber length 650mm (min)
    Pieces to cut 75, 25, 50, 30, 50, 25, 30, 25
Total cut size per row 46mm
    Finished Board Size 450mm x 350mm x 50mm
Rough Sawn Timber Length 850mm (Min)
    Pieces to cut 75, 25, 75, 50, 30, 50, 30, 25
Total cut size per row 56mm
    Finished Board Size 350mm x 250mm x 35mm
Rough Sawn Timber Length 500mm (Min)
    Pieces to cut 75, 50, 40, 30, 40, 30
Total Cut Size per row 41mm
    Finished Board Size 250mm x 180mm x 35mm
Rough Sawn Timber Length 375mm (Min)
    Pieces to cut 50, 25, 40, 25, 30, 25
Total Cut Size per row 41mm

LOL . I spent all day yesterday working out exactly what you just explained perfectly 😂 i think its the ' cutting loss' that most people dont equate for?

      Hi Tim,
yea I agree, with so many cuts there's a lot of 'Kerf' to allow for. 👍

Although I'm I am a carpenter I only have a small man shed I still saving/reclaiming odd bits of nice timber to make chopping boards .this is the first video to explain how to calculate how much timber to use I've seen. Thanks ! brilliant video . maybe I did not notice but , what glue do you use .I've used tiebond 3 as it's food safe ! am happy with that

Hi Travis, thanks for the comp. Me too, always Titebond 3, I rarely use anything else to be honest, un less its a speciality job, veneer, or dark wood / glue. 👍

How wide is your beginning plank? It is 690mm long and 36mm thick but you never state how wide the plank is - I assume that the width of the plank is the starting point for the width of the end cutting board - correct??

I know my desired board dimensions, how do it go in reverse and calculate how much stock is needed?

    • @GTWoodshop
      @GTWoodshop  Před rokem

You will need to know the thickness of your chosen timber regardless of which way you work it. Once you know that you can kind of back calc it. Num of rows x thickness of timber (which translates to width of row) if you follow.

I laughed so hard at your "offcuts". Hardest part for me with an end grain board is flattening after final glueup. No drum sander here :(

@@GTWoodshop I did try with the thicknesser, the board tried to use the top as its exit point. Expensive mistake.

@@GTWoodshop Only a triton thicknesser, nothing like a you have ;) The board got caught on the blade and lifted up, lots of bad noises and the magic smoke escaped too. Plastic everywhere bent casing and not even much left of the board either.

@@GTWoodshop Thanks Graham, I've just replayed your video and realised that the sizes relate to the patterned board you introduce at the beginning and not the board you actually build in the video, it now makes blindingly obvious sense!! One last thing - where do you obtain your timber from? I haven't been able to find rough sawn timber at that depth around my area in Herts.
