    When I was training in the army, our packs were weighed and if they were too light, they added rocks to bring it up to 45lbs. British army packs (Bergens) were heavy empty. We also had a belt with two full water bottles, two ammo pouches and a rifle (SLR).

    Wich one do you recommend for warmer/sunnier places, as Atacama's desert, Chile? It has to be light, breathable but has to give the support for big temperature vary and sun protection.

      Layers, rather than a single "super garment"
      Starting in the late 1980's, and with technology advances (bringing down costs) the US Army went from a single heavy jacket to a "Rain Shell" (often Gore-Tex) and under layers of 2 different weights (thicknesses) of polypropylene long underwear, a fleece jacket, and other options.
      Layering is my advice. Based upon 40+ years of experience from the deserts of the Middle East, Western USA, various jungles, forests, mountains, and artic environments.

    • @GOOutdoorsTV
      @GOOutdoorsTV  Před 5 lety +4

      Hello,
      All outdoor jackets need to be cared for, and while the DWR can wear off over time, all waterproof jackets can be easily reproofed using Nikwax and Grangers washes to help keep it working as best as it can.

  • @MstrRo
    @MstrRo Před 5 lety

    It could hinder your sales but it could save a life: You may want to make mention of how the WPB jackets can use a temporary DWR that will fail with use, and what happens when it fails (internal jacket moisture and possible hypothermia). This I would think would be what someone would be interested in when determining the best WPB jacket. The interior of the failed membrane jacket needs to also repel water so the jacket can be wiped dry or your inner clothing will dampen or get wet which can end up creating a survival situation.

    • @GOOutdoorsTV
      @GOOutdoorsTV  Před 5 lety +1

      Hello,
      All waterproofing will wear down over time, no brand hides that fact. Reproofing will keep your jacket in working condition.

    • @MstrRo
      @MstrRo Před 5 lety

      There are more and more WPB fabrics that have a relatively permanent coating on the outside that acts, not only as the membrane but also as the DWR. Reproofing type DWR's may last about 6 weeks with heavy use but these newer fabrics with their inherent DWR are far superior to the DWR reproofing variety as they are far more durable.

    • @GOOutdoorsTV
      @GOOutdoorsTV  Před 5 lety

      Hi Nicky,
      If you've had an issue with a Montane Air, it sounds faulty rather than intended. Paramo by design isn't 100% waterproof in the same design as a waterproof shield like DWR or GORE-TEX instead they are highly water resistant. It works by wicking moisture from the inside out which looks to keep you dry.

    • @GOOutdoorsTV
      @GOOutdoorsTV  Před 5 lety

      Hi @@Braden-York that is certainly an interesting theory, however wearing plastic or rubber would only be ideal if you planned to stand still in pouring rain. Something as rigerous as a multi-day hike in an item that isn't breathable would cause you to sweat, and if the item isn't breathable, the sweat sits inside your jacket and causes you to be wet anyway, this is also detrimental to being able to regulate your body temperature.

    • @GOOutdoorsTV
      @GOOutdoorsTV  Před 4 lety +4

      Knee length jackets aren't really ideal for active use as they restrict movement. If you're out walking in a downpour, it's best to couple a jacket with waterproof overtrousers.

  • @alandavis9180

    Goretex will always keep you dry along as it doesn't rain. It's an overpriced scam. This comes from experience from using 3 of them. And yes I did wash and treat mine regularly. Have moved onto an Oringi.

    • @GOOutdoorsTV
      @GOOutdoorsTV  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi Alan, if you've had issues withe GORE-TEX product you can return them as per the GORE-TEX guarantee. There are varying types of the GORE-TEX membrane, and some will be more suitable than others depending on your need. As with any membrane, it will wear down over time and need to be reproofed as you know.

    • @GOOutdoorsTV
      @GOOutdoorsTV  Před 5 lety +1

      There are varying levels of GORE-TEX with some being more breathable than others. Basic GORE-TEX would be the least breathable of them all, but will still perform far better than a standard DWR coating.

      Hi Scott, you're right to a degree, but you'll find the pocket positions and helmet compatible hoods are often only used on jackets relevant to a more technical user. A casual jack doesn't need pockets higher up as it's less comfortable for day to day use, and you don't need a large hood without a helmet.
