      @@elionl1299 If you listen to old HI episodes when Grey and Brady talk about the issue Grey says that learning foreign languages in school (that's an important part of his point) is useless and a waste of time, but he doesn't really have an issue with people from other countries that don't have English as a main language learn it at school, I don't really remember his answer when Brady called him out on that, but from my recollection, it was very wishy-washy

    When I think about legacy, my first thought always gravitates towards making enough money in the future to create a scholarship program that grows enough every year that more and more people can take a scholarship and go to college. I think that is a good way to be remembered, especially if you name it after yourself or your family name, as well as give back to either people who want to go into the same field as you or people of less means that could be the next CGP Grey or MLK.

    19:20 ish: I'm an argentinian teacher of English as foreign language. One of the things I struggled with at my teaching training college is precicely the fact that I'm teaching a skill, rather than about the culture that speaks that language. So, why do I have to make my students care about how the english drink their tea? no, I teach ENGLISH, and some of my students throught the years have told me something akin to "This is the first time I learn some English at school".

    I'm with Mike. I have a very mild fear of being left behind while traveling with a group. So I would rather get confused than to be left behind. With that said, I love walking around a city on my own cause of the freedom it brings.
    As a Canadian I'm glad I droped out of High school French to do homework instead... Though I'm disappointed that French was the only language of choice, The Today me would love to speak Japanese.
    We actually had a culture and religion class but I have no idea what it was about. On another school topic music class was Useless and I still get upset when I realize I have music on my high school diploma.
    It's okay to be egotistical every now and than as long as it doesn't become overbearing or pushy. While I never think of myself having much of an ego like at all, I know if I had half the motivation as Grey or Mike I would push for being remembered for 200 years after I die but it would be through good deeds and making products people talk about long after I'm gone.

    I think the language issue is just an issue for countries where English is the main language and other languages are just added in school for a year or 2. Coming from a French speaking school, I learned English for 10 years and Spanish for 5. At the end, I could definitely hold a conversation in all of them. Sadly I haven't used my Spanish in a while, but I can still follow shows with subtitles.

    On the subject of not making products that you wouldn't use. I've done some work at university on gaming accessibility for people with disabilities. I had to fight to get actual disabled people in the loop. Every ten years or so someone designs a "speaking glove" to translate sign language without consulting any deaf people about if it's a good idea or not.

    13:55 This is a niggling fear I have, being stuck somewhere without my designated mode of transport. I don't drive so anywhere I go that isn't by public transport leaves me completely at the whim of the person transporting me. In the UK I know I'd probably be fine even if that did happen, but it still gives me a lingering sense of unease.

      One of the rare instances of the British influencing the 21st century :P a “pound sign” is a “£”, a “hash” is a “#”, hence when hashes started to be used for tagging posts on social media they are called... hashtags :)

      @@matt4812 I don't think so. According to Oxford Dictionary, the North American usage of "pound sign" to refer to "#" was based on representation of a unit of mass; it is unrelated to pounds sterling.

    • @matt4812
      @matt4812 Před 3 lety +1

      @@ronnoc5278 I’m not sure that’s relevant, the question is why it’s called a hashtag rather than a poundtag, the origin of why North America calls the character pound doesn’t affect why Britain and Ireland (possibly other places, I don’t know) don’t. That symbol couldn’t be called a pound in the UK because there already was a pound symbol, which is the Sterling pound.
      Most new internet customs tend to have a US origin these days, so you’d expect # to be a poundtag, my point was that for some reason that didn’t happen and the British term was used (which is rare)
